The adsorption potential of a nonliving alga Nostoc comminutum for the removal of hazardous dyes from aqueous solutions was assessed. The algal biomass in its native form exhibited the highest dye removal efficiency at a pH of 1 and at a contact time of 50 min. The effect of various chemical pretreatments was studied in order to assess the role of surface chemistry and the underlying mechanism. Combined with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies, it was concluded that the carboxylic and amine groups played a dominant role in the dye binding process. pH studies further revealed that besides the electrostatic mechanism, other physical interactions might be operative, which is also revealed from the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm model. Kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption process followed the second-order kinetics and particle diffusion mechanisms were operative. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the adsorption of two dyes onto the algal biomass was feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic under the studied conditions. Microwave irradiation was proposed as a green method for the regeneration and reuse of the biomass. A 16% loss in the regeneration efficiency of the biosorbent was observed, which reveals its stability and reuse potential. Column experiments with real textile wastewater established the practicality of the developed system. Finally, a comparative study revealed the efficacy of the biosorbent with other previously reported biosorbents for dye removal. 相似文献

Macrophages are key innate immune effector cells best known for their role as professional phagocytes, which also include neutrophils and dendritic cells. Recent evidence indicates that macrophages are also key players in metabolic homoeostasis. Macrophages can be found in many tissues, where they respond to metabolic cues and produce pro- and/or anti-inflammatory mediators to modulate metabolite programmes. Certain metabolites, such as fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol crystals, elicit inflammatory responses through pathogen-sensing signalling pathways, implicating a maladaptation of macrophages and the innate immune system to elevated metabolic stress associated with overnutrition in modern societies. The outcome of this maladaptation is a feedforward inflammatory response leading to a state of unresolved inflammation and a collection of metabolic pathologies, including insulin resistance, fatty liver, atherosclerosis and dyslipidaemia. The present review summarizes what is known about the contributions of macrophages to metabolic diseases and the signalling pathways that are involved in metabolic stress-induced macrophage activation. Understanding the role of macrophages in these processes will help us to develop therapies against detrimental effects of the metabolic syndrome. 相似文献

Malassezia, a skin colonizer, is associated with multiple skin disorders in adults, and cephalic pustulosis and folliculitis in children. It can cause fungemia in infants and neonates. The time and pattern of colonization, risk factors associated with colonization and causing fungemia in children, are not well understood. The prospective cohort study was conducted to determine the rate of Malassezia species colonization and associated factors in hospitalized neonates and infants. Consecutive 50 neonates and infants admitted in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units were studied. The skin swabs were collected on the day of admission and every fifth day, thereafter, till the patient was discharged or died. Putative risk factors for the colonization of Malassezia species were recorded. Isolates were identified by phenotypic methods and sequencing of the D1 and D2 region of rDNA. Neonates were not colonized at the time of entry in neonatal ICU or at birth. Nineteen (38 %) neonates were colonized with Malassezia species during their hospital stay. Among the infants, three (6 %) came to ICU with Malassezia colonization and 26 (52 %) acquired Malassezia during ICU stay. Mechanical ventilation, duration of hospital stay, central venous catheterization, and antifungal therapy were the significantly associated factors for colonization. Malassezia furfur was the most common species isolated from the skin of infants and neonates. Colonization by Malassezia species in infants and neonates in a hospital is not uncommon and can be a potential source of nosocomial infection. 相似文献

Over the last few decades Cry1Ac toxin has been widely used in controlling the insect attack due to its high specificity towards target insects. The pore-forming toxin undergoes a complex mechanism in the insect midgut involving sequential interaction with specific glycosylated receptors in which terminal GalNAc molecule plays a vital role. Recent studies on Cry toxins interactions with specific receptors revealed the importance of several amino acid residues in domain III of Cry1Ac, namely Q509, N510, R511, Y513 and W545, serve as potential binding sites that surround the putative GalNAc binding pocket and mediate the toxin-receptor interaction. In the present study, alanine substitution mutations were generated in the Cry1Ac domain III region and functional significance of those key residues was monitored by insect bioassay on Helicoverpa armigera larvae. In addition, ligand blot analysis and SPR binding assay was performed to monitor the binding characteristics of Cry1Ac wild type and mutant toxins towards HaALP receptor isolated from Helicoverpa armigera. Mutagenesis data revealed that, alanine substitutions in R511, Y513 and W545 substantially impacted the relative affinity towards HaALP receptor and toxicity toward target insect. Furthermore, in silico study of GalNAc-mediated interaction also confirmed the important roles of these residues. This structural analysis will provide a detail insight for evaluating and engineering new generation Cry toxins to address the problem of change in insect behavioral patterns. 相似文献
