The present study was carried out to determine the detailed histological and cytological features of the excurrent ducts of
the male reproductive system in the rhesus monkey. The excurrent ducts show a regional difference in their histological features.
The use of some of these features as histological markers and their possible functional significance are discussed.
The epithelial cells in the different components of the excurrent duct system possess cytological features which suggest their

The carnivorous mosquito Lutzia (= Culex) raptor devours 20 to 50 larvae (third instar) of Culex fatigans in a day. The predatory capacity of L. raptor is not influenced by changes in volume of water, but significantly influenced by changes in prey density. With increasing prey density, the percentage of prey killed and left unconsumed increases. The duration required to subdue and consume a single larva is 15 min for L. raptor previously deprived of food for 3 to 24 hrs; the handling duration of prey increases to 20 min for the predator previously deprived food for 1 hr. The duration increases with increasing prey size; L. raptor requires 1, 6, 62 or 113 min to handle a single II, III, IV or mini pupa of Culex fatigans weighing 0.2,1.2,4.2 and 4.0 mg respectively. 相似文献

Chronic topical cases of Sporotrichosis, a chronic fungal infection caused by the ubiquitously present cryptic members of the Sporothrix species complex, are treated with oral administrations of itraconazole. However, severe pulmonary or disseminated cases require repeated intra-venous doses of amphotericin B or even surgical debridement of the infected tissue. The unavoidable adverse side-effects of the current treatments, besides the growing drug resistance among Sporothrix genus, demands exploration of alternative therapeutic options. Medicinal herbs, due to their multi-targeting capacity, are gaining popularity amidst the rising antimicrobial recalcitrance. Withania somnifera is a well-known medicinal herb with reported antifungal activities against several pathogenic fungal genera. In this study, the antifungal effect of the whole plant extract of W. somnifera (WSWE) has been explored for the first time, against an itraconazole resistant strain of S. globosa. WSWE treatment inhibited S. globosa yeast form growth in a dose-dependent manner, with IC50 of 1.40 mg/ml. Minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) was found to be 50 mg/ml. Sorbitol protection and ergosterol binding assays, revealed that anti-sporotrichotic effects of WSWE correlated well with the destabilization of the fungal cell wall and cell membrane. This observation was validated through dose-dependent decrease in overall ergosterol contents in WSWE-treated S. globosa cells. Compositional analysis of WSWE through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) exhibited the presence of several anti-microbial phytochemicals like withanone, withaferin A, withanolides A and B, and withanoside IV and V. Withanone and withaferin A, purified from WSWE, were 10–20 folds more potent against S. globosa than WSWE, thus, suggesting to be the major phytocompounds responsible for the observed anti-sporotrichotic activity. Cholesteryl ester (CE) accumulation in macrophages represents a crucial event during foam cell formation, a hallmark of atherogenesis. Here we investigated the role of two previously described CE hydrolases, hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) and KIAA1363, in macrophage CE hydrolysis. HSL and KIAA1363 exhibited marked differences in their abilities to hydrolyze CE, triacylglycerol (TG), diacylglycerol (DG), and 2-acetyl monoalkylglycerol ether (AcMAGE), a precursor for biosynthesis of platelet-activating factor (PAF). HSL efficiently cleaved all four substrates, whereas KIAA1363 hydrolyzed only AcMAGE. This contradicts previous studies suggesting that KIAA1363 is a neutral CE hydrolase. Macrophages of KIAA1363−/− and wild-type mice exhibited identical neutral CE hydrolase activity, which was almost abolished in tissues and macrophages of HSL−/− mice. Conversely, AcMAGE hydrolase activity was diminished in macrophages and some tissues of KIAA1363−/− but unchanged in HSL−/− mice. CE turnover was unaffected in macrophages lacking KIAA1363 and HSL, whereas cAMP-dependent cholesterol efflux was influenced by HSL but not by KIAA1363. Despite decreased CE hydrolase activities, HSL−/− macrophages exhibited CE accumulation similar to wild-type (WT) macrophages. We conclude that additional enzymes must exist that cooperate with HSL to regulate CE levels in macrophages. KIAA1363 affects AcMAGE hydrolase activity but is of minor importance as a direct CE hydrolase in macrophages. 相似文献

Dendrimers represents a highly branched three-dimensional structure that provides a high degree of surface functionality and versatility. PAMAM dendrimers are used as well-defined nanocontainers to conjugate, complex or encapsulate therapeutic drugs or imaging moieties. Star-burst [PAMAM] dendrimers represent a superior carrier platform for drug delivery. The present study was aimed at synthesis of a surface modified dendrimer for cancer targeted drug delivery system. For this 4.0 G PAMAM dendrimer was conjugated with Gallic acid [GA] and characterized through UV, IR, 1H NMR and mass spectroscopy. Cytotoxicity study of dendrimer conjugate was carried out against MCF-7 cell line using MTT assay. The metabolism of 14 C-putrescine and the changes in the endogenous concentrations of putrescine, spermidine and spermine were studied when cotyledons of Pinus radiata D. Don were cultured under shoot-forming (SF, + N6 -benzyladenine) and non-shoot-forming (NSF, - N6 -benzyladenine) conditions. Differences in the total uptake of 14 C-putrescine during a 2 h pulse feeding were not significant between the SF and NSF cotyledons except on day 3. The maximum uptake of label was on day 3 in the SF cotyledons, which released the highest amount of 14 CO2 as well. 14 C from the labeled putrescine was incorporated mainly into γ-aminobutyric acid, aspartate and glutamate. High performance liquid chromatography of the endogenous polyamines indicated that spermidine was the most predominant polyamine in the cultured cotyledons of radiata pine. Spermine increased by about 60% in the SF and 25% in the NSF cotyledons between days 0 and 3 of culture. 相似文献

In the present study possibility of coupling stripper to remove ammonia to the UASB reactor treating poultry litter leachate was studied to enhance the overall performance of the reactor. UASB reactor with stripper as ammonia inhibition control mechanism exhibited better performance in terms of COD reduction (96%), methane yield (0.26m(3)CH(4)/kg COD reduced), organic loading rate (OLR) (18.5kg COD m(-3)day(-1)) and Hydraulic residence time (HRT) (12h) compared to the UASB reactor without stripper (COD reduction: 92%; methane yield: 0.21m(3)CH(4)/kg COD reduced; OLR: 13.6kg CODm(-3)day(-1); HRT: 16h). The improved performance was due to the reduction of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and free ammonia nitrogen (FAN) in the range of 75-95% and 80-95%, respectively by the use of stripper. G/L (air flow rate/poultry leachate flow rate) in the range of 60-70 and HRT in the range of 7-9min are found to be optimum parameters for the operation of the stripper. 相似文献
