Background

Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudomonas fluorescens strain KH-1 was found to exhibit plant growth promotional activity in rice under both in-vitro and in-vivo conditions. But the mechanism underlying such promotional activity of P. fluorescens is not yet understood clearly. In this study, efforts were made to elucidate the molecular responses of rice plants to P. fluorescens treatment through protein profiling. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis strategy was adopted to identify the PGPR responsive proteins and the differentially expressed proteins were analyzed by mass spectrometry.  相似文献

Aim

To study the pattern and prevalence of dyslipidemia in a large representative sample of four selected regions in India.

Methods

Phase I of the Indian Council of Medical Research–India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study was conducted in a representative population of three states of India [Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Jharkhand] and one Union Territory [Chandigarh], and covered a population of 213 million people using stratified multistage sampling design to recruit individuals ≥20 years of age. All the study subjects (n = 16,607) underwent anthropometric measurements and oral glucose tolerance tests were done using capillary blood (except in self-reported diabetes). In addition, in every 5th subject (n = 2042), a fasting venous sample was collected and assayed for lipids. Dyslipidemia was diagnosed using National Cholesterol Education Programme (NCEP) guidelines.

Results

Of the subjects studied, 13.9% had hypercholesterolemia, 29.5% had hypertriglyceridemia, 72.3% had low HDL-C, 11.8% had high LDL-C levels and 79% had abnormalities in one of the lipid parameters. Regional disparity exists with the highest rates of hypercholesterolemia observed in Tamilnadu (18.3%), highest rates of hypertriglyceridemia in Chandigarh (38.6%), highest rates of low HDL-C in Jharkhand (76.8%) and highest rates of high LDL-C in Tamilnadu (15.8%). Except for low HDL-C and in the state of Maharashtra, in all other states, urban residents had the highest prevalence of lipid abnormalities compared to rural residents. Low HDL-C was the most common lipid abnormality (72.3%) in all the four regions studied; in 44.9% of subjects, it was present as an isolated abnormality. Common significant risk factors for dyslipidemia included obesity, diabetes, and dysglycemia.

Conclusion

The prevalence of dyslipidemia is very high in India, which calls for urgent lifestyle intervention strategies to prevent and manage this important cardiovascular risk factor.  相似文献

We examined the effect of biosolid compost on the adsorption and complexation of cadmium (Cd) in two soils (Egmont and Manawatu) which varied in their organic matter content. The effect of biosolid compost on the uptake of Cd from the Manawatu soil, treated with various levels of Cd (0–10 mg Cd kg–1 soil), was also examined using mustard (Brassica juncea L.) plants. The transformation of Cd in soil was evaluated by a chemical fractionation scheme. Addition of biosolid compost increased negative charge in soil. The effect of biosolid compost on Cd adsorption varied between the soils, with a large portion of the sorbed Cd remaining in solution as an organic complex. Increasing addition of Cd increased Cd concentration in plants, resulting in decreased plant growth at high levels of Cd (i.e., phytotoxicity). Addition of biosolid compost was effective in reducing the phytotoxicity of Cd as indicated by the decrease in the concentration of NH4OAc extractable-Cd and soil solution-Cd. The solid-phase fractionation study indicated that the addition of biosolid compost decreased the concentration of the soluble and exchangeable Cd fraction but increased the concentration of organic-bound Cd fraction in soil. Alleviation of Cd phytotoxicity by biosolid compost can be attributed primarily to complexation of Cd by the organic matter in the biosolid compost.  相似文献

Turfgrass, the most widely grown ornamental crop, is severely affected by fungal pathogens including Sclerotinia homoeocarpa, Rhizoctonia solani, and Magnaporthe poae. At present, turfgrass fungal disease management predominantly relies on synthetic fungicide treatments. However, the extensive application of fungicides to the soil increases residual detection frequency, raising concerns for the environment and human health. The bacterial volatile compound, 2,3-butanediol (BDO), was found to induce plant resistance. In this study, we evaluated the disease control efficacy of a combination of stereoisomers of 2,3-BDO and commercial fungicides against turfgrass fungal diseases in both growth room and fields. In the growth room experiment, the combination of 0.9% 2R,3R-BDO (levo) soluble liquid (SL) formulation and 9% 2R,3S-BDO (meso) SL with half concentration of fungicides significantly increased the disease control efficacy against dollar spot and summer patch disease when compared to the half concentration of fungicide alone. In field experiments, the disease control efficiency of levo 0.9% and meso 9% SL, in combination with a fungicide, was confirmed against dollar spot and large patch disease. Additionally, the induction of defense-related genes involved in the salicylic acid and jasmonic acid/ethylene signaling pathways and reactive oxygen species detoxification-related genes under Clarireedia sp. infection was confirmed with levo 0.9% and meso 9% SL treatment in creeping bentgrass. Our findings suggest that 2,3-BDO isomer formulations can be combined with chemical fungicides as a new integrated tool to control Clarireedia sp. infection in turfgrass, thereby reducing the use of chemical fungicides.  相似文献

Hyperglycaemia reduces proliferation of bovine aortic endothelial cells in vitro. A similar effect in vivo may contribute to long-term complications of diabetes such as impaired wound-healing and retinopathy. We report the effect of increased glucose concentrations, glycated basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) and bovine serum albumin-derived advanced glycation endproducts (BSA-AGE) on the proliferation of bovine aortic endothelial cells.Glucose (30 and 50 mmol/l) had an antiproliferative effect on endothelial cells. This effect may be mediated through reduced mitogenic activity of FGF-2. The glycation of FGF-2 with 250 mmol/l glucose-6-phosphate led to reduced mitogenic activity compared to native FGF-2. BSA-AGE at concentrations of 10, 50 and 250 g/ml had an antiproliferative effect on cultured endothelial cells.Aminosalicylic acid at a concentration of 200 mol/l proved to be more effective than equimolar concentrations of aminoguanidine in protecting endothelial cells against the antiproliferative effects of both high (30 mmol/l) glucose and 50 g/ml BSA-AGE. FGF-2 glycated in the presence of 4 mmol/l aminosalicylic acid or aminoguanidine retained mitogenic activity compared to that glycated in their absence.Compounds like aminoguanidine and, in particular, aminosalicylic acid protect endothelial cells against glucose-mediated toxicity and may therefore have therapeutic potential.  相似文献

There is an urgent need for developing alternate strategies to combat Malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) because of growing drug resistance and increased incidents of infection in humans. 3D models of P. falciparum annotated proteins using molecular modeling techniques will enhance our understanding about the mechanism of host parasite interactions for the identification of drug targets and malarial vaccine design. Potential structural templates for P. falciparum annotated proteins were selected from PDB (protein databank) using BLASTP (basic local alignment search tool for proteins). This exercise identified 476 Plasmodium proteins with one or more known structural templates (>or= 40 % identity) for further modeling. The pair-wise sequence alignments generated for protein modeling were manually checked for error. The models were then constructed using MODELLER (a comparative protein modelling program for modelling protein structures) followed by energy minimization in AMBER force field and checked for error using PROCHECK.
