1. Glucose 6-phosphate, fructose 6-phosphate and altroheptulose 7-phosphate are the major products formed non-oxidatively from ribose 5-phosphate by rat epididymal fat pad enzymes. 2. Arabinose 5-phosphate was detected among the reaction products and significant activity of the new enzyme of the L-type pentose pathway, D-glycero D-ido octulose 1,8-bisphosphate: D-altroheptulose 7-phosphotransferase was found. 3. The glucose moieties of glucose 1-phosphate, glucose 6-phosphate and glucose 1,6-bisphosphate were degraded and showed that epididymal fat pad enzymes relocate 14C from [2-14C]glucose into C-1, C-2, and C-3 of each hexose-phosphate. 4. The 14C-distribution patterns in the hexose-phosphates revealed that these intermediates were not in isotopic equilibrium and the rate of the transaldolase exchange reaction was relatively small. 5. The 14C-distribution data suggest that glucose 1-phosphate, rather than glucose 6-phosphate, is the first intermediate in the path of glycogen synthesis from glucose in this tissue. 6. Summary Techniques for transforming intact tissues of cereals were evaluated for their efficacy in transforming immature embryos and
Type II callus of maize (Zea mays L.). The techniques used were particle bombardment, tissue electroporation, tissue electrophoresis, and silicon carbide fibers.
Each method was assessed in terms of transient β-glucuronidase (GUS) expression. High levels of GUS expression were observed
in A188 Type II callus using both tissue electroporation and particle bombardment, with means of 417.8 and 954.5 blue expression
units (beu) per g fresh weight (FW) callus, respectively. Only particle bombardment resulted in high transient gene expression
in immature embryos, with a mean transformation frequency of 34.8 b.e.u. per embryo. Very low levels of GUS expression were
achieved with silicon carbide-mediated gene transfer, even when employing tissues used in the original publication (Black
Mexican Sweet suspension cells). GUS expression was not obtained following tissue electrophoretic gene delivery. 相似文献

The scales of three species of fishes, yellow perch Perca flavescens , walleye Sander vitreus and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar , were acidified and the isotopic signatures were compared to non-acidified scales from the same fishes. No significant acidification effects on either carbon or nitrogen isotope signatures were found. The aim of this research was to determine whether all memory T cells have the same propensity to migrate to the joint in patients
with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Paired synovial fluid and peripheral blood mononuclear cell proliferative responses to
a panel of antigens were measured and the results correlated with a detailed set of laboratory and clinical data from 39 patients
with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Two distinct patterns of proliferative response were found in the majority of patients:
a diverse pattern, in which synovial fluid responses were greater than peripheral blood responses for all antigens tested;
and a restricted pattern, in which peripheral blood responses to some antigens were more vigorous than those in the synovial
fluid compartment. The diverse pattern was generally found in patients with a high acute phase response, whereas patients
without elevated acute phase proteins were more likely to demonstrate a restricted pattern. We propose that an association
between the synovial fluid T cell repertoire and the acute phase response suggests that proinflammatory cytokines may influence
recruitment of memory T cells to an inflammatory site, independent of their antigen specificity. Additionally, increased responses
to enteric bacteria and the presence of αEβ7 T cells in synovial fluid may reflect accumulation of gut associated T cells
in the synovial compartment, even in the absence of an elevated acute phase response. This is the first report of an association

A novel human plasma protein has been identified as a universal component of complement deposits, when complement is detected immunohistochemically in vivo. The protein is homologous to complement factor H and related proteins and has been designated factor H-related protein 5 (FHR-5). FHR-5 was identified by a monoclonal antibody raised using pathologic human glomerular preparations as the immunogen. FHR-5 was purified by affinity chromatography from complement-lysed erythrocytes, and the peptide sequence was obtained. The cDNA was cloned from a human liver library, and FHR-5 was deduced to be a protein containing 551 amino acids organized into nine short consensus repeat motifs. The short consensus repeats of FHR-5 show homology to Factor H and to other Factor H-related proteins, with some unique features demonstrated. Recombinant FHR-5, expressed in insect cells, was shown to bind C3b in vitro. The strong association of FHR-5 with tissue complement deposits in vivo suggests that this additional member of the Factor H family of proteins has a function in complement regulation. 相似文献

Recent studies point to the need for improved understanding of environmental management frameworks designed to combine qualitative public and quantitative technical inputs in decision-making processes. Flux in public perception and concern about risks imply frameworks must be iterative in nature and incorporate a variety of assessment triggers in the form of decision points. A conceptual model is proposed here to explain the de facto operation of standard risk analytic frameworks within the broader sociopolitical milieu of public policy. The model is presented as a decision flow diagram that emphasizes setting environmental management goals based on societal input and the formulation of decision criteria for selecting management actions to achieve those goals. Prospective and retrospective decision control points operate to select management options that, respectively, avoid or reduce actual or predicted effects. Feedback loops that modify risk management outcomes are identified. Technical and scientific inputs (i.e., risk analysis) are assigned an essential information role within the framework and are responsible for informing the management process with the results of appropriately conducted and reviewed investigations. The proposed model is intended primarily to indicate how environmental risk management decision-making and associated technical assessments may be influenced by social pressures. It is hoped this understanding will lead to analytical transparency and better public communication of the environmental implications of policy options. 相似文献
