Although most researchers use the terms "guild" and "functional group" more or less synonymously, these two concepts bear different meanings. The guild concept refers primarily to the mechanisms of resource sharing by species in a competitive context whereas the functional groups concept is concerned with how a resource or any other ecological component is processed by different species to provide a specific ecosystem service or function. In many cases but not necessarily all, the two concepts are the two "faces" or "sides" of the same coin: the sharing by species of a similar resource is the guild facet (structural), while the ecosystem processes these species eventually perform through resource exploitation is the functional group facet. The two concepts differ in that competitive relationships within groups of species are not the focus of the functional group approach, exactly as processes or functions are not the focus of the guild approach. A group of species can be considered either as a guild or a functional group depending on the question addressed. Guild and functional group membership is independent of phylogenetic relationships but because species tend to share similar life history traits and adaptations through common evolutionary history, guild and functional group associates are often closely related. The concept of guild has had broader application in animal studies than in plant studies, whereas the reverse is true for the concept of functional group. Recent methodological advances to objectively partition species into guilds and functional groups, taking into consideration the most relevant characters or traits for delineating them, provide the means to construct an operational framework for making in situ and ex situ experiments that are urgently needed for a better understanding of the role of species in ecosystem functioning, especially in relation to global change concerns. 相似文献

Objective: The long‐term effects of fetal hyperinsulinemia, time course of changes in liver and very‐low‐density lipoprotein (VLDL) lipid levels and fatty acid compositions were investigated in obese offspring of streptozotocin‐induced mildly diabetic rats. Research Methods and Procedures: Mild hyperglycemia in pregnant rats was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin on day 5 of gestation. Control pregnant rats were injected with citrate buffer. Liver and VLDL lipids and fatty acids were analyzed in offspring at different ages. Results: At birth, obese pups had higher VLDL triglyceride levels, saturated fatty acids, and C20:4n‐6. They also had lower C18:2n‐6 proportions in VLDL triglycerides, phospholipids, and cholesteryl esters than controls pups. In 1‐month‐old male and female obese rats, VLDL and liver lipid amounts were similar to those in their respective controls; however, high levels of C18:2n‐6 and C20:4n‐6 were noted in liver and VLDL lipids. At the age of 2 months, liver and VLDL triglyceride levels were higher in obese females than in control females. Fatty acid abnormalities seen in obese rats included low C18:3n‐3 and high C22:6n‐3 proportions in liver triglycerides and phospholipids. At the age of 3 months, obese rats, both males and females, compared with control animals, had higher VLDL and hepatic lipids with reduced C20:4n‐6 levels and polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acids ratios in hepatic and VLDL triglycerides and phospholipids. Discussion: Fetal obesity, associated with alterations in VLDL lipid fatty acid composition, represents an important risk factor for adult obesity and diabetes. 相似文献

Genotypic variation in the response of two perennial grass species to elevated carbon dioxide 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Shoot and reproductive biomass of genotypes of Bromus erectus and Dactylis glomerata grown in competition at ambient and elevated CO2 were examined for 2 consecutive years in order to test whether genetic variation in those traits exists and whether it is maintained over time. At the species level, a positive CO2 response of shoot biomass of both species was only found in the first year of treatment. At the genotype level, no significant CO22genotype interaction was found at any single harvest either for vegetative or reproductive biomass of either species. Analysis over time, however, indicated that there is a potential for evolutionary adaptation only for D. glomerata: (1) repeated measures ANOVA detected a marginally significant CO22genotype2time interaction for shoot biomass, because the range of the genotypes CO2 response increased over time; (2) genotypes that displayed the highest response during the first year under elevated CO2 also showed the highest response the second year. Null (B. erectus) or weak (D. glomerata) selective potentials of elevated CO2 were detected in this experiment, but short time series could underestimate this potential with perennial species. 相似文献

We have identified ARAP1 and ARAP2 and examined ARAP1 as a possible link between phosphoinositide-, Arf-, and Rho-mediated cell signaling. ARAP1 contains Arf GAP, Rho GAP, Ankyrin repeat, Ras-associating, and five PH domains. In vitro, ARAP1 had Rho GAP and phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5) trisphosphate (PIP3)-dependent Arf GAP activity. ARAP1 associated with the Golgi. The Rho GAP activity mediated cell rounding and loss of stress fibers when ARAP1 was overexpressed. The Arf GAP activity mediated changes in the Golgi apparatus and the formation of filopodia, the latter a consequence of increased cellular activity of Cdc42. The Arf GAP and Rho GAP activities both contributed to inhibiting cell spreading. Thus, ARAP1 is a PIP3-dependent Arf GAP that regulates Arf-, Rho-, and Cdc42-dependent cell activities. 相似文献

Many epidemiological studies have demonstrated the high prevalence of erectile dysfunction, particularly among aging males and patients with chronic diseases. Many of these studies, using an objective methodology, showed that this problem induces major suffering for the patient and his partner. This suffering results less from loss of sexual pleasure than from loss of self-esteem, humiliation or guilt of being “impotent”, and from the consequences on the relationship of the patient's modified personality and attitudes (introversion, irritability, avoidance of tenderness and intimacy). These problems are also worsened by the female partner, who questions her own femininity, related, to confusion between loss of erection and lack of desire. The impact of erectile dysfunction extends well beyond sexual function, as it constitutes a real identity problem for the man, affecting his relational and work life (loss of dynamism and self-confidence). Many objective studies have demonstrated significant improvement of various quality of life parameters after effective treatment of erectile problems with intracavernosal injections or tablets They also have shown significant improvement of global quality of life (and not only sexual quality of life) and many psychological parameters (anxiety, depression, self-confidence in sexual and marital relationships and social and work life, hostility and interrelational sensitivity). Global health indices are also improved. Despite the suffering due to erectile problems, and the fact these problems can be effectively treated, few men mention these problems to their general practitioner. Many surveys, estimate between 5 and 30% the percentage of men with erectile dysfunction seeking medical attention, although they also reveal that a higher proportion would like to be helped. Because of religious and sociocultural taboos and their shame and fear of being judged or that their problem will be revealed, men are embarrassed to raise this question. Other causes are also involved in this phenomenon: fear that their request will be rejected by the doctor, or the belief that no treatments are available for this type of problem, or that they have to accept this problem as an inevitable part of physiological aging. Surveys confirm that patients would like their doctor to question them about their sexual functioning. This appears to be all the more desirable in that erectile problems are often due to endothelial dysfunction with may also affect other vessels such as coronary arteries. The diagnosis of these disorders could help to identify and correct the risks factors responsible for both types of this disease. 相似文献

Platyphora leaf beetles form a vast group of tropical species each feeding on a restricted set of host plants and exhibiting bright coloration warning predators against their chemical protection. These beetles offer an exceptional opportunity for understanding the evolution of phytochemical sequestration. Indeed, qualitative studies of defensive secretions indicate that Platyphora species acquire toxicity via sequestration of plant secondary metabolites. All produce pentacyclic triterpene saponins from sequestered plant amyrins, but our analyses also indicate that many Platyphora species produce a dual chemical defence, that is, they are additionally protected by lycopsamine-type pyrolyzidine alkaloids that they also sequester from their host. This paper reports on the evolution of chemical defence and host affiliation in Platyphora leaf beetles as reconstructed on a molecular phylogeny of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. The analyses indicate that dual sequestration could be the key mechanistic means by which transitions among ecological specializations (i.e. restricted host-plant affiliations) are made possible. 相似文献

Fluorescent Pseudomonas species are characterized by the production of pyoverdin-type siderophores for Fe3+ acquisition in iron-limited environments. Since it produces a structurally specific pyoverdin, Pseudomonas putida strain BTP1 could represent a valuable tool in an attempt to correlate the structural features of these compounds with some specificity in their two main properties i.e. affinity for iron and recognition rate by other Pseudomonas strains. An uncommonly high affinity for iron of the pyoverdin synthetized by P. putida BTP1 was observed by comparing both the apparent stability constant and the decomplexation kinetic of its ferric complex with those of ferripyoverdins from other strains. On another hand, results from growth stimulation experiments and labeled ferripyoverdin uptake assays highlighted the very low recognition rate of BTP1 isopyoverdins by membrane receptors of foreign strains. By contrast, P. putida BTP1 was able to utilize a broad spectrum of structurally unrelated exogenous pyoverdins by means of multiple receptors that are likely constitutively expressed in its outer membrane. The unusual traits of its pyoverdin-mediated iron acquisition system should contribute to enlarge the ecological competence of Pseudomonas putida BTP1 in terms of colonization and persistence in the rhizosphere. 相似文献

Neutral endopeptidase (NEP) is a zinc metallopeptidase ubiquitously distributed in various tissues in mammals. This peptidase is involved in the post-secretory metabolism of various neuropeptides and peptide hormones in vivo, such as enkephalins, bradykinin, atrial natriuretic peptide, substance P and endothelins. In this paper we show that NEP is expressed in ovaries as a 110-kDa glycosylated integral membrane protein with enzymatic properties similar to those of the kidney protein. Using immunohistochemistry, we localize the peptidase in the granulosa cells of follicles at all stages of maturation, with the exception of atretic follicles. We also observe immunoreactive staining in the epithelia that lines the blood vessels in the medulla and the surface of the ovary. The co-localization of NEP and bioactive peptides known to be physiological substrates of NEP in other tissues suggests an important role for this protein in processes such as follicle maturation, ovulation, and/or regulation of ovarian blood flow, by modulating the physiological function of these peptides. 相似文献

Abstract. The cessation of coppicing and grazing in Quercus woodlands, with its subsequent changes in the structure, composition and functioning of vegetation communities, is becoming more frequent throughout the Mediterranean Basin. In southern France, we have studied successional changes in Quercus pubescens woodlands by visiting previously studied sites 18 yr later. Changes in vertical structure, species richness, floristic composition, life form and dispersal type were analysed and compared between woodlands that had previously been grazed or ungrazed. Both successions showed a decline in vegetation cover in the 0–25 cm height class and in the height class immediately under the canopy layer, due to oak litter accumulation and tree ageing. In post‐grazing succession, the abandonment of grazing and associated burning has allowed the vegetation cover to increase in the 0.25‐2 m height class. In both successions, grassland species decreased in frequency and forest species increased, a trend which was stronger in undisturbed succession. Species richness decreased with time in the undisturbed succession, but remained stable in the post‐grazing succession mainly because of the slow decline of plants linked to grazing. In undisturbed succession, therophytes and hemicryptophytes decreased. In contrast, therophytes and hemicryptophytes remained stable in post‐grazing succession. In both successions, endozoochorous species (notably Ruscus aculeatus) increased. Plants dispersed by non‐animal vectors decreased in undisturbed succession, but stability was observed in most of the dispersal types in post‐grazing succession. These results showed that a time‐lag existed between undisturbed succession and post‐grazing succession, the latter remaining at a younger stage of successional development due to more recent impact of grazing. However, both successions have converged suggesting that most of the traces of grazing on vegetation will disappear within a few years. The vegetation of these coppices, regardless of the previous grazing regime, will become increasingly similar to the vegetation of undisturbed woodlands. However, their floristic composition will probably never be identical to that of undisturbed woodlands, mainly because of the rarity of these undisturbed woodlands and of the short‐distance dispersal of many forest plant species. 相似文献
