To manage agroecosystems for multiple ecosystem services, we need to know whether the management of one service has positive, negative, or no effects on other services. We do not yet have data on the interactions between pollination and pest‐control services. However, we do have data on the distributions of pollinators and natural enemies in agroecosystems. Therefore, we compared these two groups of ecosystem service providers, to see if the management of farms and agricultural landscapes might have similar effects on the abundance and richness of both. In a meta‐analysis, we compared 46 studies that sampled bees, predatory beetles, parasitic wasps, and spiders in fields, orchards, or vineyards of food crops. These studies used the proximity or proportion of non‐crop or natural habitats in the landscapes surrounding these crops (a measure of landscape complexity), or the proximity or diversity of non‐crop plants in the margins of these crops (a measure of local complexity), to explain the abundance or richness of these beneficial arthropods. Compositional complexity at both landscape and local scales had positive effects on both pollinators and natural enemies, but different effects on different taxa. Effects on bees and spiders were significantly positive, but effects on parasitoids and predatory beetles (mostly Carabidae and Staphylinidae) were inconclusive. Landscape complexity had significantly stronger effects on bees than it did on predatory beetles and significantly stronger effects in non‐woody rather than in woody crops. Effects on richness were significantly stronger than effects on abundance, but possibly only for spiders. This abundance‐richness difference might be caused by differences between generalists and specialists, or between arthropods that depend on non‐crop habitats (ecotone species and dispersers) and those that do not (cultural species). We call this the ‘specialist‐generalist’ or ‘cultural difference’ mechanism. If complexity has stronger effects on richness than abundance, it might have stronger effects on the stability than the magnitude of these arthropod‐mediated ecosystem services. We conclude that some pollinators and natural enemies seem to have compatible responses to complexity, and it might be possible to manage agroecosystems for the benefit of both. However, too few studies have compared the two, and so we cannot yet conclude that there are no negative interactions between pollinators and natural enemies, and no trade‐offs between pollination and pest‐control services. Therefore, we suggest a framework for future research to bridge these gaps in our knowledge.  相似文献

Annexin A1 (AnxA1) is an important anti‐inflammatory mediator during granulocytic differentiation in all trans‐retinoic acid (ATRA) treated acute promyelocytic leukemic (APL) cells. Dexamethasone has been used successfully to prevent complications in ATRA‐treated APL patients, although its mechanism of action is still not clear. In the present study, we have examined the effect of dexamethasone on the modulation of AnxA1 in ATRA‐APL NB4 (ATRA‐NB4) cells, ATRA‐NB4 cells‐derived microparticles (MPs) and its role during cell–cell interaction between ATRA‐NB4 cells and endothelial cells. Our results have shown that dexamethasone can inhibit the percentage of ATRA‐NB4 cells expressing surface AnxA1 and its receptor FPR2/ALX in a time‐dependent manner based on flow cytometric analysis. However, dexamethasone treatment of ATRA‐NB4 cells has no significant effect on the level of AnxA1 mRNA, the total cellular level of AnxA1 protein or the release of AnxA1 from these cells, as determined by RT‐PCR, Western blotting, and ELISA, respectively. Further studies demonstrate that dexamethasone is able to significantly inhibit the adhesion of ATRA‐NB4 cells to endothelial cells, and this anti‐adhesive effect can be inhibited if the cells were pre‐treated with a neutralizing antibody specific for AnxA1. Finally, dexamethasone also enhances the release of AnxA1‐containing MPs from ATRA‐NB4 cells which can in turn prevent the adhesion of the ATRA‐NB4 cells to endothelial cells. We conclude that biologically active AnxA1 originating from dexamethasone‐treated ATRA‐APL cells and their MPs plays an anti‐adhesive effect and this contributes to inhibit the adhesion of ATRA‐APL cell to endothelial cells. The aim of this study was to elucidate the influence of receptor activity modifying protein 1 (RAMP1) overexpression on the expression and distribution of calcitonin receptor‐like receptor (CRLR) in MG‐63 cells. Our research also focused on whether RAMP1 overexpression enhanced the promoting effect of exogenous CGRP on osteogenic differentiation in MG‐63 cells. We first constructed a eukaryotic expression vector containing human RAMP1 and stably transfected it into MG‐63 cells. Real‐time PCR and Western blotting were used to determine the expression levels of RAMP1 and CRLR mRNA and protein, respectively. Immunofluorescence analysis was employed to compare the distribution of CRLR in transfected cells. After treatment with CGRP, the extent of osteogenic differentiation was evaluated by simultaneous monitoring of alkaline phosphatase activity, the expression patterns of osteoblastic markers and mineralisation staining. We found that RAMP1 was more highly expressed in the transfected group compared with the control groups (P < 0.01). The CRLR expression was significantly higher than that in the control groups (P < 0.05). In addition, after 7 days of CGRP treatment to induce osteogenic differentiation, the expression of collagen I mRNA was markedly increased in the transfected group (P < 0.05). The transfected group exhibited more granular precipitation in the cytoplasm with alkaline phosphatase staining after 7 and 14 days of differentiation. When stained with Alizarin Red, cells overexpressing RAMP1 were darker and formed many mineralised nodules with clear boundaries and calcium deposition typical of mineralised bone matrix structures at 28 days post‐induction of differentiation. The CGRP‐induced ALP activity in the RAMP1 overexpression group was significantly higher 3, 6 and 9 days after induction than that in the two control groups (P < 0.05). RAMP1 overexpression promotes CRLR expression, localisation on the cell membrane and enhanced CGRP‐mediated differentiation of MG‐63 cells. This study contributes to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing CGRP‐induced MG‐63 differentiation. J. Cell. Wnt‐signaling pathway is implicated in pancreatic development and functional regulation of mature beta‐cells. Wnt3a/Wnt pathway activation expands islet cell mass in vitro by increasing proliferation and decreasing apoptosis of beta‐cells, thereby enhancing its function. However, the signaling pathways that mediate these effects remain unknown. By using a clonal beta‐cell line (NIT‐1), we examined the role of IRS2/PI3K in the mediation of Wnt3a‐stimulated beta‐cell growth. Real‐time PCR and Western blot were employed to investigate the activity of Wnt/β‐catenin and IRS2/PI3K signaling. Proliferation of NIT‐1 cells was assessed by BrdU incorporation, and apoptosis was quantitatively determined by TUNEL and flow cytometry (FCM). Dkk1, an inhibitor of Wnt signaling, and wortmannin, an inhibitor of PI3K, were also used. Results showed that Wnt3a rapidly activated Wnt/β‐catenin signaling, promoted IRS2 expression and Akt phosphorylation in NIT‐1 cells. These effects were completely abrogated by Dkk1 or partially eliminated by wortmannin. Wnt3a also promoted NIT‐1 cell proliferation, inhibited cytokine‐induced beta‐cell apoptosis, and increased insulin secretion. Both of these effects were also eliminated by Dkk1 or wortmannin. Our results demonstrated that Wnt3a regulates proliferation, apoptosis and enhances function of pancreatic NIT‐1 beta cells via activation of Wnt/β‐catenin signaling, involving crosstalk with IRS2/PI3K signaling, with the effect of Wnt signaling on beta‐cells also being IRS2/PI3K/AKT dependent. A Plio-Pleistocene to Holocene faunal sequence has been recovered from four carefully excavated caves in the Bubing Basin, adjacent to the larger Bose Basin of South China. The caves vary in elevation; we suggest that the higher caves were formed and filled with sediments prior to the lower caves. The highest deposits, which are from Mohui Cave, contain hominoid teeth and other fossilized remains of mammalian taxa most similar to late Pliocene and early Pleistocene faunas. Wuyun Cave ( approximately 50m lower in elevation than Mohui) contains a late middle Pleistocene fauna, which is supported by U-series age constraints from 350 to 200ka. Lower Pubu Cave ( approximately 23m below Wuyun) is assigned to the late Pleistocene, while the Cunkong Cave (the lowest, approximately 2m lower elevation than Lower Pubu) preserves a Holocene fauna. The four faunal assemblages indicate species-level changes in Ailuropoda, Stegodon, and Sus, the appearance of Elephas, the local disappearance of Stegodon, and the migration of Equus hemionus to South China. These initial results of our work call into question the continued value of the Stegodon/Ailuropoda Fauna, a category long used to characterize the Pleistocene faunas of South China. Excavation of karstic caves of varying elevation within the basins of South China holds promise for defining local sequences of mammalian fossils that can be used to investigate faunal variations related to climate change, biogeographic events, and evolutionary change over the past two million years. Stable isotopic analysis of a small sample of mammalian teeth from Bubing Basin caves is consistent with 100% C(3) vegetation in the Bubing/Bose region, with certain delta(13)C values consistent with a canopied woodland or forest. A preliminary assessment of the hominoid teeth indicates the presence of diverse molar and premolar morphologies including dental remains of Gigantopithecus blacki and a sample with similarities to the teeth reported from Longgupo.  相似文献

This study aimed to compare the effects of different velocities of eccentric muscle actions on acute blood lactate and serum growth hormone (GH) concentrations following free weight bench press exercises performed by resistance-trained men. Sixteen healthy men were divided into two groups: slow eccentric velocity (SEV; n = 8) and fast eccentric velocity (FEV; n = 8). Both groups performed four sets of eight eccentric repetitions at an intensity of 70% of their one repetition maximum eccentric (1RMecc) test, with 2-minute rest intervals between sets. The eccentric velocity was controlled to 3 seconds per range of motion for SEV and 0.5 seconds for the FEV group. There was a significant difference (P < 0.001) in the kinetics of blood lactate removal (at 3, 6, 9, 15, and 20 min) and higher mean values for peak blood lactate (P = 0.001) for the SEV group (9.1 ± 0.5 mM) compared to the FEV group (6.1 ± 0.4 mM). Additionally, serum GH concentrations were significantly higher (P < 0.001) at 15 minutes after bench press exercise in the SEV group (1.7 ± 0.6 ng · mL−1) relative to the FEV group (0.1 ± 0.0 ng · mL−1). In conclusion, the velocity of eccentric muscle action influences acute responses following bench press exercises performed by resistance-trained men using a slow velocity resulting in a greater metabolic stress and hormone response.  相似文献

Declines in insect pollinators across Europe have raised concerns about the supply of pollination services to agriculture. Simultaneously, EU agricultural and biofuel policies have encouraged substantial growth in the cultivated area of insect pollinated crops across the continent. Using data from 41 European countries, this study demonstrates that the recommended number of honeybees required to provide crop pollination across Europe has risen 4.9 times as fast as honeybee stocks between 2005 and 2010. Consequently, honeybee stocks were insufficient to supply >90% of demands in 22 countries studied. These findings raise concerns about the capacity of many countries to cope with major losses of wild pollinators and highlight numerous critical gaps in current understanding of pollination service supplies and demands, pointing to a pressing need for further research into this issue.  相似文献

The alpha-carboxy terminus 1 (αCT1) peptide is a synthetically produced mimetic modified from the DDLEI C-terminus sequence of connexin 43 (Cx43). Previous research using various wound healing models have found promising therapeutic effects when applying the drug, resulting in increased wound healing rates and reduced scarring. Previous data suggested a rapid metabolism rate in vitro, creating an interest in long term release. Using a streptozotocin (STZ) type I diabetic rat model with a surgically induced corneal injury, we delivered αCT1 both directly, in a pluronic gel solution, and in a sustained system, using polymeric alginate-poly-l-ornithine (A-PLO) microcapsules (MC). Fluorescent staining of wound area over a 5 day period indicated a significant increase in wound closure rates for both αCT1 and αCT1 MC treated groups, withαCT1 MC groups showing the most rapid wound closure overall. Analysis of inflammatory reaction to the treatment groups indicated significantly lower levels of both Interferon Inducible T-Cell Alpha Chemoattractant (ITAC) and Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNFα) markers using confocal quantification and ELISA assays. Additional analysis examining genes selected from the EMT pathway using RT-PCR and Western blotting suggested αCT1 modification of Transforming Growth Factor Beta 2 (TGFβ2), Keratin 8 (Krt8), Estrogen Receptor 1 (Esr1), and Glucose Transporter 4 (Glut4) over a 14 day period. Combined, this data indicated a possible suppression of the inflammatory response by αCT1, leading to increased wound healing rates.  相似文献

Wild pollinators have been shown to enhance the pollination of Brassica napus (oilseed rape) and thus increase its market value. Several studies have previously shown that pollination services are greater in crops adjoining forest patches or other seminatural habitats than in crops completely surrounded by other crops. In this study, we investigated the specific importance of forest edges in providing potential pollinators in B. napus fields in two areas in France. Bees were caught with yellow pan traps at increasing distances from both warm and cold forest edges into B. napus fields during the blooming period. A total of 4594 individual bees, representing six families and 83 taxa, were collected. We found that both bee abundance and taxa richness were negatively affected by the distance from forest edge. However, responses varied between bee groups and edge orientations. The ITD (Inter‐Tegular distance) of the species, a good proxy for bee foraging range, seems to limit how far the bees can travel from the forest edge. We found a greater abundance of cuckoo bees (Nomada spp.) of Andrena spp. and Andrena spp. males at forest edges, which we assume indicate suitable nesting sites, or at least mating sites, for some abundant Andrena species and their parasites (Fig.  1 ). Synthesis and Applications. This study provides one of the first examples in temperate ecosystems of how forest edges may actually act as a reservoir of potential pollinators and directly benefit agricultural crops by providing nesting or mating sites for important early spring pollinators. Policy‐makers and land managers should take forest edges into account and encourage their protection in the agricultural matrix to promote wild bees and their pollination services.

Introduction

Pollinators play an important functional role in most terrestrial ecosystems and provide a key ecosystem service (Ashman et al. 2004 ). Insects, particularly bees, are the primary pollinators for the majority of the world's angiosperms (Ollerton et al. 2012 ). Without this service, many interconnected species and processes functioning within both wild and agricultural ecosystems could collapse (Kearns et al. 1998 ). Brassica napus (oilseed rape, OSR) represents the most widespread entomophilous crop in France with almost 1.5 Mha in 2010 (FAOSTAT August 10th, 2012). Results differ between varieties, but even though it seems that OSR produces 70% of its fruits through self‐pollination (Downey et al. 1970 in Mesquida and Renard 1981 ), native bees are also known to contribute to its pollination (Morandin and Winston 2005 ; Jauker et al. 2012 ). Bee pollination leads to improved yields (Steffan‐Dewenter 2003b ; Sabbahi et al. 2005 ) and to a shorter blooming period (Sabbahi et al. 2006 ), thus increasing the crop's market value (Bommarco et al. 2012 ). The most widely used species in crop pollination is the honeybee (Apis mellifera L) which is sometimes assumed to be sufficient for worldwide crop pollination (Aebi and Neumann 2011 ). However, this assertion has been questioned by different authors (Ollerton et al. 2012 ), and several studies show that many wild bees are also efficient pollinators of crops (Klein et al. 2007 ; Winfree et al. 2008 ; Breeze et al. 2011 ). Recently, Garibaldi et al. ( 2013 ) found positive associations of fruit set with wild‐insect visits to flowers in 41 crop systems worldwide. They demonstrate that honeybees do not maximize pollination, nor can they fully replace the contributions of diverse, wild‐insect assemblages to fruit set for a broad range of crops and agricultural practices on all continents with farmland. Unfortunately, not only are honey bees declining due to a variety of different causes (vanEngelsdorp et al. 2009 ), wild bee populations are also dwindling (Potts et al. 2010 ). Their decline has been documented in two Western European countries (Britain and the Netherlands) by comparing data obtained before and after 1980 (Biesmeijer et al. 2006 ). These losses have mostly been attributed to the use of agrochemicals, the increase in monocultures, the loss of seminatural habitat and deforestation (Steffan‐Dewenter et al. 2002 ; Steffan‐Dewenter and Westphal 2008 ; Brittain and Potts 2011 ). Several studies have shown the importance of natural or seminatural habitats in sustaining pollinator populations or pollination services close to fruit crops (Steffan‐Dewenter 2003a ; Kremen et al. 2004 ; Greenleaf and Kremen 2006a ; Carvalheiro et al. 2010 ). Morandin and Winston ( 2006 ) presented a cost–benefit model that estimates profit in OSR agroecosystems with different proportions of uncultivated land. They calculated that yield and profit could be maximized with 30% of the land left uncultivated within 750 m of field edges. Other studies have demonstrated a negative impact of the distance from forests on pollination services or bee abundance and richness both in tropical ecosystems (De Marco and Coelho 2004 ; Blanche et al. 2006 ; Chacoff and Aizen 2006 ) and in temperate ecosystems (Hawkins 1965 ; Taki et al. 2007 ; Arthur et al. 2010 ; Watson et al. 2011 ). These studies all suggest that natural or seminatural habitats are important sources of pollinators, probably because they provide “partial habitats” (Westrich 1996 ) such as complementary mating, foraging, nesting, and nesting materials sites that bees need to complete their life cycle. In this study, we focused on the effect of distance to forest edge on bee assemblages in OSR ecosystems. Forest edges could provide one or more important partial habitats for different bee species in agricultural landscapes, in particular when associated with a mass‐flowering crop such as OSR (Le Feon et al. 2011 ). For example, the availability of untilled soil and dead branches might provide ground‐nesting and cavity‐nesting bee species with numerous nesting sites. Moreover, during spring at least, the understory and the forest edge can provide cover containing flowering plants and wild trees such as Prunus spp, Castanea sativa, or Salix spp and thereby allow bees to find alternative floral resources. During spring 2010 and 2011, in two areas in France, we examined wild bee abundance and taxa richness both along forest edges and inside OSR fields at different distances from the forest. Like other taxa, bees respond to environmental variables according to their biologic traits that determine access and requirements for nesting, mating, and forage resources, species mobility or physiological tolerance. Specifically, we hypothesized that (1) bee abundance, species richness, and composition of bee communities within the crop field are dependent on the distance from the forest edge (where complementary floral resources, nesting sites, shelters, etc. can be found) and on the orientation of the forest edge; (2) the identity of bees in the crop is related to their foraging range which we measured with the ITD (Inter‐Tegular distance); (3) the forest edge may be the nesting or mating sites for cavity‐nesting or ground‐nesting bees such as Osmia spp or Andrena spp which are important groups of potential early spring pollinators for OSR.  相似文献
