Acid hydrolysis of cell wall-rich material from young leaves of the lycophyte Selaginella apoda (L.) Spring yielded substantial amounts of 3-O-methyl-D-galactose (1) in addition to the usual major monosaccharides (glucose, galactose, arabinose, xylose and galacturonic acid). The yield of 1 approximately equalled that of galacturonic acid. Compound 1 was identified as 3-O-methylgalactose by its 1H and 13C NMR spectra, and shown to be the D-enantiomer by its susceptibility to D-galactose oxidase. Compound 1 was detected in acid hydrolysates of the alcohol-insoluble residues from young leaves of all lycophytes tested, both homosporous (Lycopodium, Huperzia and Diphasiastrum) and heterosporous (Selaginella). It was not detectable in the charophyte green algae Coleochaete scutata, Chara coralina or Klebsormidium flaccidum, any bryophytes [a hornwort (Anthoceros), four liverworts and three mosses], or any euphyllophytes [a psilopsid (Psilotum), a horsetail (Equisetum), eusporangiate and leptosporangiate ferns, the gymnosperm Gnetum, and diverse angiosperms]. A high content of 1 is thus an autapomorphy of the lycophytes.  相似文献

Hearing in eight species of northern Canadian freshwater fishes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The hearing thresholds of eight fish species from northern Canada were measured using auditory evoked potential techniques. The species with the best hearing was the lake chub Couesius plumbeus , followed by the longnose sucker Catastomus catastomus , both which had relatively sensitive hearing over the frequency range tested from 100 to 1600 Hz. The remaining species (troutperch Percopsis omiscomaycus , nine-spined stickleback Pungitius pungitius , pike Esox lucius , spoonhead sculpin Cottus ricei , burbot Lota lota and broad whitefish Coregonus nasus ) all showed most sensitivity to low frequencies (<400 Hz) and had relatively insensitive high frequency hearing. The two species with the best hearing are otophysan fishes with connections between the swimbladder and inner ear. The spoonhead sculpin lacks a swimbladder, while the other non-otophysan species have swimbladders, but no specialized connection to the inner ear. These results can be used to predict the potential impact of anthropogenic noise, such as seismic air gun blasts, on hearing in these species. The species with the most sensitive hearing (lake chub and longnose sucker) are most likely to be affected by activities such as seismic air gun surveys.  相似文献

Plant cells are surrounded by a dynamic cell wall that performs many essential biological roles, including regulation of cell expansion, the control of tissue cohesion, ion-exchange and defence against microbes. Recent evidence shows that the suite of polysaccharides and wall proteins from which the plant cell wall is composed shows variation between monophyletic plant taxa. This is likely to have been generated during the evolution of plant groups in response to environmental stress. Understanding the natural variation and diversity that exists between cell walls from different taxa is key to facilitating their future exploitation and manipulation, for example by increasing lignocellulosic content or reducing its recalcitrance for use in biofuel generation.  相似文献

We tested two hypotheses for the mechanism by which xyloglucan–pectin covalent bonds are formed in Arabidopsis cell cultures. Hypothesis 1 proposed hetero-transglycosylation, with xyloglucan as donor substrate and a rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) side-chain as acceptor. We looked for enzyme activities that catalyse this reaction using α-(1→5)-l-[3H]arabino- or β-(1→4)-d-[3H]galacto-oligosaccharides as model acceptor substrates. The 3H-oligosaccharides were supplied (with or without added xyloglucans) to living Arabidopsis cell-cultures, permeabilised cells, cell-free extracts, or four authentic XTHs. No hetero-transglycosylation occurred. Therefore, we cannot support hypothesis 1. Hypothesis 2 proposed that some xyloglucan is manufactured de novo as a side-chain on RG-I. To test this, we pulse-labelled Arabidopsis cell-cultures with [3H]arabinose and monitored the radiolabelling of anionic (pectin-bonded) xyloglucan, which was resolved from free xyloglucan by ion-exchange chromatography. [3H]Xyloglucan–pectin complexes were detectable <4 min after [3H]arabinose feeding, which is shorter than the transit-time for polysaccharide secretion, indicating that xyloglucan–pectin bonds were formed intra-protoplasmically. Thereafter, the proportion of the wall-bound [3H]xyloglucan that was anionic remained almost constant at ∼50% for ≥6 days, showing that the xyloglucan–pectin bond was stable in vivo. Some [3H]xyloglucan was rapidly sloughed into the medium instead of becoming wall-bound. Only ∼30% of the sloughed [3H]xyloglucan was anionic, indicating that bonding to pectin promoted the integration of xyloglucan into the wall. We conclude that ∼50% of xyloglucan in cultured Arabidopsis cells is synthesised on a pectic primer, then secreted into the apoplast, where the xyloglucan–pectin bonds are stable and the pectic moiety aids wall-assembly.  相似文献

Pomacentrid fishes inhabiting the coral formations along the Red Sea coast of Sinai Peninsula form specific groups of species on various habitats. Amphirion bicinctus, Dascyllus aruanus, D. marginatus and Pomacentrus trichourus are typical for the backreef lagoon; Pomacentrus sulfureus, Abudefduf melanopus and A. melas are common along the rearreef wall; Pomacentrus albicaudatus, P. tripunctatus, Abudefduf lacrymatus, A. leucozona and A. annulatus dominate the coral reef table. The forereef wall is occupied by Abudefduf saxatilis, A. sexfasciatus and A. leucogaster . The lower part of the forereef and coral knolls along it are inhabited by groups of Abudefduf azysron, Chromis dimidiatus, C. caeruleus, C. ternatensis and of the Dascyllus trimaculatus . Among the fishes observed a part are living in groups or schools, whereas others are typical solitary, permanent territory holders. Most of them are polygamous, breeding in colonies, or solitary in nests, guarded by males. The variation in feeding behaviour as well as in sociobiology, enables the high diversity of these fishes on various parts of the habitat.  相似文献
