The parameters of cardiac-muscle repolarization: The measurement and information value

We performed a comparative analysis of different classes of algorithms for computer-assisted cardiological diagnostics. The concepts of an “internal” and “external” image of myocardial ischemia were formulated. We also discussed the biophysical aspects for the basic indices of spatial heterogeneity of the repolarization process in the myocardium, as well as the problems of measurement of the corresponding parameters. The experimental part was performed on two groups of patients. Both experimental and control groups included two sets of 12-lead electrocardiograms of real patients: “Normal” and “Ischemia” (with lateral localization). The experimental group consisted of 202 and 143 electrocardiograms, while the control group consisted of 200 and 91 electrocardiograms, respectively. The electrocardiograms were verified according to the Minnesota Code criteria.     

A biorhythmologic approach to evaluating forced swimming as an experimental model of a "depressive" state

Rhythmical structure of forced swimming was studied on rats. Reserpine (1 mg/kg, 24 h before testing), clonidine (150 mkg/kg) and prolonged repeated striatal stimulation induced behavioural depression with reorganization of swimming rhythm and increase of short cycles (less than 6 s) of immobility. After chronic administration of antidepressants (imipramine, amitriptyline, niamid, 10 mg/kg/day, during 14 days), on the contrary, the number of these cycles diminished, while the number of active swimming cycles increased. Chrono-biological "index of depression" is suggested to express more exactly behavioural depression and specific activity of antidepressants than usual registration of immobility time.     

Effect of the structure of oligonucleotide substrates on interaction with methylase Eco dam

The interaction of Eco dam methylase with various synthetic oligonucleotide substrates was investigated. The "imperfect" duplexes contained a normal GATC recognition sequence in one chain of the enzyme recognition site and had some defects in the complementary chain, i.e., the absence of one or several nucleotide residues or the presence of S-methyl thiophosphate groups at the 3'-termini. The 3'-S-methyl thiophosphate residue has the same effect on the methylation of oligonucleotide complexes as does the absence of internucleotide phosphate in the analogous complexes. The presence of both GA dinucleotides in the recognition site is necessary for a productive enzyme-substrate interaction. The experimental data suggest that Eco dam methylase does form a symmetrical enzyme-substrate complex which is similar to that formed by type II restriction enzymes.     

Effect of movement and illusion of movement on human vestibulomotor response

Lateral stabilographic response to galvanic labyrinth stimulation was investigated in healthy subjects in the standing position. Vestibulomotor response increased during forwards volitional body tilt as well as involuntary tilt occurring in response to stimulating (by vibration) the proprioceptors of the anterior tibial muscles. An illusion of the forward body tilt induced by stimulating (vibrating) the proprioceptors of the triceps surae muscles with the trunk fastened in a fixed position was accompanied by practically the same intensification of vestibulomotor response as during actual body movement. It was concluded that reinforcement of vestibulomotor response during volitional movements is brought about by the spatial perception system.Institute for Research into Information Transmission, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. The recovery of the reactivity of the auditory system in the dolphin Tursiops truncatus to paired acoustic stimuli with different spectra]

Recovery cycles of the auditory brainstem responses were studied in the bottle-nosed dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, using paired acoustic clicks. The recovery time was longer if both clicks had identical spectra (50% recovery at 0.9 ms), as compared with that of different spectra (50% recovery at 0.35 ms). These results can explain a different recovery time of evoked responses after an artificial sound and after own locating one.     

Assimilation of animal fats by yeasts and synthesis of protein by continuous cultivation in a complex nutrient medium

Under the conditions of continuous cultivation studies were carried out on a mixed culture (association) with two strains of yeasts: Candida sp., assimilating animal fats, and Candida scottii, assimilating reducing sugars. A complex nutrient medium of wood hydrolysate was used. It was established that in this medium, at a rate of dilution of D = 0.25 h^?1, the mixed culture assimilates the fats and the sugars simultaneously. As a result of this the yield of absolutely dry yeasts with regard to the total sum of fats and sugars amounts to 71% in the case of incineration fat and to 82% in the case of technical pork fat. The contents of protein, amino acids, lipids and ashy substances in the yeasts obtained from a medium with fats do not differ substantially from those obtained from the same medium without fats.     

immunocytochemical localization of urokinase-type plasminogen activator in lewis lung carcinoma

The invasively growing and metasizing Lewis lung carcinoma consistently contained urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA) enzyme activity. When investigated immunocytochemically with antibodies against u-PA, different parts of individual tumors showed a pronounced heterogeneity in staining intensity. Strong staining was found in areas with invasive growth and degradation of surrounding normal tissue, while other areas were completely devoid of staining. Immunoreactivity occurred both with a perinuclear cytoplasmic localization in tumor cells and associated with apparently extracellular material. SDS PAGE of tumor extracts, under both reducing and nonreducing conditions, followed by immunoblotting, showed only one immunocytochemically stainable band with an electrophoretic mobility corresponding to that of purified proenzyme to u-PA, while no two-chain u-PA was detected. This indicates that the major part of the activator in Lewis lung carcinoma is present as one-chain pro-u-PA.
