Oxidative stress is a biological condition produced by a variety of factors, causing several chronic diseases. Oxidative stress was, therefore, treated with natural antioxidants, such as ellagic acid (EA). EA has a major role in protecting against different diseases associated with oxidative stress. This review critically discussed the antioxidant role of EA in biological systems. The in vitro and in vivo studies have confirmed the protective role of EA in suppressing oxidative stress. The review also discussed the mechanism of EA in suppressing of oxidative stress, which showed that EA activates specific endogenous antioxidant enzymes and suppresses specific genes responsible for inflammation, diseases, or disturbance of biochemical systems. The amount of EA used and duration, which plays a significant role in the treatment of oxidative stress has been discussed. In conclusion, EA is a strong natural antioxidant, which possesses the suppressing power of oxidative stress in biological systems. 相似文献

The lectins from the seedsof Dolichos lablab var.lignosus (field bean) andDolichos lablab var.typicus (lablab bean) have been isolated in a homogeneous form by affinity chromatography on D-mannose linked Sepharose. Both the
lectins are glycoproteins and have a molecular weight of 60,000 andS
20,w value of 5.2 and seem to be made up of 4 similar subunits (apparent molecular weight 15,000). The carbohydrate content ofthe
lectins is mostly fucose (2–5 mol per mol of protein), mannose (5–8 mol per mol of protein) and N-acetyl glucosamine (1–2
mol per mol of protein). The amino acid composition of both the lectins was similar and methionine and half cystine could
not be detected, Both the lectins have similar tryptic peptide map. Alanine and serine were the only N and C-terminal amino
acids for both lectins. The lectins were found to contain low amounts of bound metals such as manganese, magnesium and calcium.
The near ultra-violet circular dichroism spectra of the lectins are similar to that of Sainfoin. Circular dichroism data indicate
that tyrosine and tryptophan residues are involved in sugar binding.
The lectins are nonspecific for human blood groups and they agglutinate a variety of other erythrocytes. Among a number of

Transport of 1-14C-IAA in successive stem segments ofCuscuta was strictly basipetal in growing and non growing regions of the vine with a flux velocity of 10–12 mm/h (intercept method). This transport showed a distinct peaked profile, increasing from a low value at 10 mm from the apex to a maximum between 50 and 90 mm before declining to a low value again around 160 mm at which elongation growth ceased. The IAA transport profile paralleled the in vivo growth rate profile, though the latter peaked ahead of transport. A better correlation was observed between the profile of growth responsiveness of the vine to exogenous IAA application and the profile of IAA transport. Growth responsiveness was determined as the differential in growth rate of stem segments in vitro in the absence and presence of growth optimal concentration of IAA (10 m). Retention of exogenous IAA in the stem was maximal where transport decreased, and this coincided with the region of maximal conjugation of applied 1-14C-IAA to aspartic acid to form indoleacetylaspartate (IAAsp). In addition to aspartate, IAA was conjugated to a small extent to an unidentified compound. IAA destruction by decarboxylation was greatest where transport was low, particularly in the nongrowing region, where lignification occurred (i.e., beyond 180 mm). At concentrations up to 20 M, a pulse of 1-14C-IAA chased by cold IAA moved as a peak (with a peak displacement velocity of 12–18 mm/h) in the growth region of the vine, but became diffusionlike where growth either fell off steeply or ceased. At a higher (50 M) IAA concentration, though uptake was not saturated, transport in the growth region became diffusionlike, indicating saturation of the system. Reduced IAA flux in the region where growth responsiveness to IAA declined coincided with the region of increased IAA conjugation. However, it cannot be concluded whether increased IAA conjugation was the cause or effect of decreased IAA flux. Application of benzyladenine to the vines in vivo, a treatment that elicited haustoria formation by 72 h, resulted in the inhibition of both IAA transport and elongation growth rate in the subapical region. In vitro treatment of vine segments with BA similarly increased IAA retention and decreased IAA transport. IAA loss was suppressed, and conjugation to IAAsp was enhanced. 相似文献

Abstract Enrichment cultures for H2 -CO2 , methanol- or acetate-utilizing methanogens were prepared from two rice field soil samples. All the cultures except one acetate enrichment showed significant methane production. Pure cultures of Methanobacterium - and Methanosarcina -like organisms were isolated from H2 -CO2 and methanol enrichment cultures, respectively, and were characterized for various nutritional and growth conditions. The organisms had an optimal pH range of 6.4–6.6 and a temperature optimum of 37°C. The Methanobacterium isolates were able to utilize H2 -CO2 but no other substrates as sole energy source, while the Methanosarcina isolates were able to utilize methanol, methylamines or H2 -CO2 as sole energy sources. Both Methanobacterium isolates and one isolate of Methanosarcina were able to use dinitrogen as the sole source of nitrogen for growth. Luminescent heteroleptic ruthenium(II) complexes of type RuLnX3–n [L = 1,10‐phenanthroline (phen), X = 4,7 diphenyl phenanthroline disulfonate, (dpsphen) n = 0,1,2,3] were synthesized and their photophysical properties investigated in homogeneous and cationic (CTAB), anionic (SDS) and nonionic (Triton X‐100) micelles. The luminescent quantum yield and lifetime of the complexes were found to increase in the presence of micellar media and on the introduction of a disulfonate ligand into the coordination sphere. Both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions play an important role in the micellar media. Begomoviruses are a major group of plant viruses, transmitted exclusively by Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) in a persistent circulative non‐propagative manner. The information regarding molecular and cellular basis underlying Begomovirus – whitefly interaction is very scarce. Evidences have suggested that the insect gut possesses some crucial protein receptors that allow specific entry of virus into the insect haemolymph. We have performed yeast two hybrid gut cDNA expression library screening against coat protein of Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCV) and Cotton leaf curl Rajasthan virus (CLCuV) as bait. Midgut protein (MGP) was the common protein found interacting with both ToLCV and CLCuV. MGP was localized in whole mount B. tabaci as well as in dissected guts through confocal microscopy. Pull down and dot blot assays confirmed in vitro interaction between ToLCV/CLCuV coat protein and MGP. Immunolocalization analysis also showed colocalization of ToLCV/CLCuV particles and MGP within insect's gut. Finally, anti‐MGP antibody fed B. tabaci, exhibited 70% reduction in ToLCV transmission, suggesting a supportive role for MGP in virus transmission. 相似文献

The ability of extremely low, time-varying electromagnetic field (EMF) to improve germination efficacy was studied in Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) seeds using response surface methodology. An optimal factorial central composite design was chosen to optimize the EMF with three critical factors, viz. frequency, intensity, and duration. The adequacy of the model and fitness was evaluated by analysis of variance and regression coefficients. This model suggested that the factors, frequency, and intensity had a significant impact on germination. Optimal conditions for germination were observed to be 10 Hz frequency, 30,007 nT intensity, and 30-min duration with an observed germination percentage of 93.0, and a predicted germination percentage of 92.92. Magneto-priming was found to increase the germination efficacy (15.66%), shoot length (27.78%), total seedling length (20.30%), seedling dry mass (26.49%), and water uptake (34.48% at 80 min) showing significant output when compared with the control and positive controls. Remarkable improvements were observed in germination parameters such as vigor index-1 (39.14%), vigor index-2 (46.28%), speed of germination (27.52%), and emergence index (12.50%). Magneto-priming was found to reduce the levels of germination-specific enzymes, viz. α-amylase, protease, and dehydrogenase, while it enhanced the levels of antioxidant enzymes, viz. catalase (114.63%) and superoxide dismutase (19.62%), triggering fast germination and early vigor of seedlings. This study clearly showed that EMF priming significantly improved the germination effect and other characteristics of Foxtail millet seeds. We tested whether local abundance of rain forest trees in the medium elevation wet forests of the southern Western Ghats (WG) was related to environmental tolerance, life form, and geographical range. We selected trees in medium elevation wet forests (750–1700 m asl) of the southern WG, using two data bases: a small plot (30 × 30 m) data base of 288 species of trees (≥ 3 cm dbh) in 33 plots totaling 2.97 ha, and a data base of 135 species of tree (≥ 10 cm dbh) in larger plots of 1 ha each, totaling 4.84 ha. The species density per hectare and number of records in the plot network was used in a factor analysis to give a measure of the local abundance of each species. The altitude and seasonality ranges of these species in the WG was assessed from independent data bases and used to generate an environmental tolerance score. Results indicated that as a species became locally more abundant, it occurred across a wider range of environmental gradients, but regional distribution was not related to geographical distribution. Understory species tended to be rarer with smaller range sizes and lower environmental tolerances than overstory species. Climate change is predicted to have drastic effects on restricted range species with limited environmental tolerances. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Detection of unculturable bacteria and their localization in the host, by fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH), is a powerful technique in the study of host-bacteria interaction. FISH probes are designed to target the 16 s rRNA region of the bacteria to be detected. LNA probes have recently been used in FISH studies and proven to be more efficient. To date no report has employed LNA probes for FISH detection of bacterial endosymbiont in the whole mount tissues. Further, though speculated, bacteriocytes have not been reported from males of Bemisia tabaci. RESULTS: In this study, we compared the efficiency in detecting bacteria by fluorescent DNA oligonucleotides versus modified probes containing Locked Nucleic Acid (LNA) substitution in their structure. We used the insect Bemisia tabaci as the experimental material since it carried simultaneous infection by two bacteria: one a primary endosymbiont, Portiera (and present in more numbers) while the other a secondary endosymbiont Arsenophonus (and present in less numbers). Thus a variation in the abundance of bacteria was expected. While detecting both the bacteria, we found a significant increase in the signal whenever LNA probes were used. However, the difference was more pronounced in detecting the secondary endosymbiont, wherein DNA probes gave weak signals when compared to LNA probes. Also, signal to noise ratio for LNA probes was higher than DNA probes. We found that LNA considerably improved sensitivity of FISH, as compared to the commonly used DNA oligonucleotide probe. CONCLUSION: By employing LNA probes we could detect endosymbiotic bacteria in males, which have never been reported previously. We were able to detect bacteriocytes containing Portiera and Arsenophonus in the males of B. tabaci. Thus, employing LNA probes at optimized conditions will help to significantly improve detection of bacteria at the lowest concentration and may give a comprehensible depiction about their specific distribution within samples. 相似文献
