Mortality of lemmings, Lemmus lemmus, at peak density in a mountainous area of Norway

We estimated carcass density and determined cause of death in a peak-density lemming, Lemmus lemmus , population at Finse, Norway. Of 74 recovered carcasses, 80% had subcutaneous haematoma (blood underneath the skin) in the head region, though the skin on the skull most often appeared unharmed. Thirty percent were apparently killed by a mustelid predator, while 51% were probably killed by corvids. Carcass density was 26.6 and 9.4ha^-1 in good and poor lemming habitats, respectively.     

HIV-1 Nef protein: purification, crystallizations, and preliminary X-ray diffraction studies.

Human immunodeficiency virus Nef protein accelerates virulent progression of AIDS by its interaction with specific cellular proteins involved in cellular activation and signal transduction. Here we report the purification and crystallization of the conserved core of HIV-1LAI Nef protein in the unliganded form and in complex with the wild-type SH3 domain of the P59fyn protein-tyrosine kinase. One-dimensional NMR experiments show that full-length protein and truncated fragment corresponding to the product of HIV-1 protease cleavage have a well-folded compact tertiary structure. The ligand-free HIV-1 Nefcore protein forms cubic crystals belonging to space group P23 with unit cell dimensions of a = b = c = 86.4 A. The Nef-Fyn SH3 cocrystals belong to the space group P6(1)22 or its enantiomorph, P6(5)22, with unit cell dimensions of a = b = 108.2 A and c = 223.7 A. Both crystal forms diffract to a resolution limit of 3.0 A resolution using synchrotron radiation, and are thus suitable for X-ray structure determination.     

The Arabidopsis MALE STERILITY 2 protein shares similarity with reductases in elongation/condensation complexes

The Arabidopsis thaliana MALE STERILITY 2 ( MS2 ) gene product is involved in male gametogenesis. The first abnormalities in pollen development of ms2 mutants are seen at the stage in microsporogenesis when microspores are released from tetrads. Expression of the MS2 gene is observed in tapetum of wild-type flowers at, and shortly after, the release of microspores from tetrads. The MS2 promoter controls GUS expression at a comparable stage in the tapetum of transgenic tobacco containing an MS2 promoter–GUS fusion. The occasional pollen grains produced by mutant ms2 plants have very thin pollen walls. They are also sensitive to acetolysis treatment, which is a test for the presence of an exine layer. The MS2 gene product shows sequence similarity to a jojoba protein that converts wax fatty acids to fatty alcohols. A possible function of the MS2 protein as a fatty acyl reductase in the formation of pollen wall substances is discussed.     

Hemolytically active components from P. parvum and G. breve toxins

Hemolytically active fractions were isolated from the toxins produced by the red-tide dinoflagellate $\text{Gymnodinium breve}$ (GBTX) and the chrysomonad $\text{Prymnesium parvum}$ (PPTX). High pressure liquid chromatography through bonded phase (ODS) silica columns using a gradient of methanol in chloroform yielded 6 major fractions from GBTX, 3 of which were hemolytic (HD₅₀=0.3?0.56 μg·ml^?1). None were ichthyotoxic. Of the 6 fractions obtained from PPTX, 4 were hemolytic (HD₅₀=0.013?2.8 μg·ml^?1) but only one (fraction 6) was ichthyotoxic. This fraction was ～ 2000 times more hemolytic than the crude PPTX (HD₅₀=33.2 μg·ml^?1). Analysis of their UV spectra indicates that the fractions within each group are closely related.     

Independent regulation of collagen types by chondrocytes during the loss of differentiated function in culture

Collagen phenotypes were determined for rabbit articular chondrocytes in cartilage slices and first through fifth monolayer cultures. During the first 24 hr of slice culture, chondrocytes exhibited the following collagen phenotype: 96% type II, 3% X₂Y and 1% type III. In primary monolayer culture, no other types of collagen were added to this differentiated chondrocyte phenotype; however, the synthesis per cell of each of the expressed collagens was stimulated. By the fifth day of primary culture, X₂Y synthesis increased 10 fold, and by the eighth day, a further 4 fold. In contrast, the synthesis of collagen types II and III showed no change by the fifth day, but increased 7 fold by the eighth day. These results suggest independent regulation of X₂Y in this situation. In a separate experiment, first through fifth cultures were studied. The synthesis per cell of type II collagen declined steadily and essentially ceased by the fifth culture, indicating the loss of differentiated function by these chondrocyte progeny. The loss of type II synthesis was not quantitatively replaced by the synthesis of type I trimer and type I collagen which was first detected in the third culture. While these qualitative changes in phenotype occurred, the stimulated rate of type III collagen synthesis did not change and that of X₂Y declined only slightly. Thus the termination of type II synthesis did not significantly alter the synthesis of the other collagens produced by differentiated chondrocytes. The final “de-differentiated” phenotype was 41% type I, 25% X₂Y, 20% type I trimer, 13% type III and 1% type II.     

Wiedemann-Beckwith syndrome: clinical, cytogenetical and radiological observations in 39 new cases.

Thirty-nine patients (82% under 1 year of age) with Wiedemann-Beckwith syndrome (WBS) were prospectively studied. To evaluate the somatometric data the normal range was set out at mean +/- 2 SD. The relevant physical findings were a characteristic face, non increased mean height and weight, normal head circumference, defective abdominal wall, a predominance of the upper segment, and tibial bowing. Mental retardation was documented in 5 cases but in only 1 it was related to hypoglycemia. The 32 cases karyotyped were normal. Since neonatal hypoglycemia is frequent (34.3% in our series) and potentially deleterious for the CNS we propose to monitor the glycemia every 6 h during the first 3 days in WBS newborns in order to correct glycemia below of 2.6 mmol/l (46.8 mg/dl) according to recent studies. The comparison with previous large series enabled us to precise the frequency, onset and evolution of the main stigmata.     

Detritiation of L-[3-3H]alanine in the glutamate-pyruvate transaminase reaction.

The detritiation of L-[3-3H]alanine in the reaction catalyzed by pig heart glutamate-pyruvate transaminase was monitored in the absence or presence of lactate dehydrogenase. The results indicated that each monodirectional conversion of L-[3-3H]alanine to [3-3H]pyruvate resulted in the generation of 3HOH at a rate representing one-third of the total 3H flux. No isotopic discrimination in reaction velocity between tritiated and 14C-labelled L-alanine was observed. The mathematical modelling of the reaction revealed that, as a consequence of the detritiation process, the steady-state ratio in L-[3-3H]alanine/[3-3H]pyruvate does not inform on either the absolute or relative size of the amino acid and 2-keto acid pools.     

Evaluation of iodine levels in daily dietary intake and urine of persons participating in epidemiological studies in the Krakow macro-region after the disaster in Czernobyl and level of iodine in drinking water of that region]

Following the Czernobyl accident, an epidemiologic study was undertaken in which the daily iodine intake was estimated in 15% of the population studied. Iodine excretion was measured in single morning urine specimens. The iodine content was also assessed in the water form wells and in cow-milk at farms in randomly chosen villages in the region of Krynica and Nowy Sacz. On the basis of a 24-hour diet recall, the mass of each food product consumed daily was estimated for 483 persons in the Kraków voivodship (14.4% of the total population) and for 397 persons in the Nowy Sacz voivodship (15.8% of the total population). Using this data, the nutrient content of the daily diet was calculated for each studied individual. Measurements of iodine content in water and cow-milk show relatively lower iodine levels in the Nowy Sacz voivodship. The estimated value of the iodine content in milk (5.5 micrograms/100 g of milk) was considered in the estimates of the chemical composition of the daily diet of the inhabitants of this region. The mean values of the daily energy as well as the protein and calcium consumption in all subpopulations grouped with respect to domicile, age and sex, fell within the recommended daily allowances for these groups. The iodine content, while widely scattered, concentrated around low values. The median values of the iodine content in children of age 3-10 years, age 10-16 years and in adults, were 66%, 48% and 25-40% of the recommended daily allowances, respectively. No particular differences in the food intakes were observed between inhabitants of Kraków and Nowy Sacz voivodships. Nor were significant differences found in the urine iodine excretion in groups of these regions. The low iodine content in the daily food intake may be an essential factor in the ethiology of the increasing number of thyroid goiter.
