Many natural enemies employ plant‐ and/or herbivore‐derived signals for host/prey location. The larval parasitoid Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is 1 of 3 biocontrol agents currently being released in an effort to control the emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coloeptera: Burprestidae) in North America. To enhance its efficiency, allelochemicals that attract it need to be assessed. In this study, ash phloem volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of black, green, and white ash, and EAB larval frass were compared. Foraging behavior of T. planipennisi females in response to VOCs of white ash or frass from EAB larvae feeding on white ash phloem was tested using a Y‐tube olfactometer. Results indicated that the 3 ash species had similar VOC profiles. EAB larval frass generally contained greater levels of VOCs than phloem. Factor analysis indicated that the 11 VOCs could be broadly divided into 2 groups, with α‐bisabolol, β‐caryophyllene, (E)‐2‐hexenal, (Z)‐3‐hexenal, limonene, methyl benzoate, methyl indole‐3‐acetic acid, methyl jasmonate, methyl salicylate as the first group and the rest (i.e., methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate) as a second. Abundance of VOCs in white ash phloem tissue and frass, nevertheless, did not attract T. planipennisi females. The concealed feeding of EAB larvae might explain the selection for detectable and reliable virbrational signals, instead of undetectable and relatively unreliable VOC cues from phloem and frass, in short‐range foraging by T. planipennisi. Alternatively, it is possible that T. planipennisi is not amenable to the Y‐tube olfactometer assay employed.  相似文献

β-Napththoflavone administration induces certain monooxygenase activities, such as aryl hydrocarbon (benzo[a]pyrene) hydroxylase, and cytochrome P1-450 formation in the “responsive” C57BL/6 and C3H/He inbred mouse strains, whereas these changes are absent or relatively small in the so-called nonresponsive DBA2 inbred strain. Dose-response curves—with the use of large numbers of animals of the same age and sex and with either β-naphthoflavone or the much more potent 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin as inducer—reveal a small, but statistically significant, difference in the hydroxylase induction between the C57BL6J homozygote and the (C57BL6J)(DBA2J)F1 heterozygote in liver, kidney, bowel, and lung. The (C3H/HeJ)(DBA2J)F1 heterozygote displays additive inheritance in each of these same tissues.  相似文献

The metabolic integrity of fully regenerated transplants was investigated by measuring induced changes in glycogen concentration. The extensor digitorum longus and the soleus muscles were cross transplanted: the extensor digitorum longus into the soleus muscle bed (SOLT) and the soleus muscle into the extensor digitorum longus bed (EDLT). The histochemical fiber type distribution of the regenerated muscles was determined and was found to transform in cross-transplanted EDLT and SOLT. After transplantation and regeneration, both muscles had initially low glycogen concentrations. However, the EDLT glycogen concentration was not significantly different from that of the contralateral extensor digitorum longus control muscle after 60 days. In the SOLT, glycogen gradually increased but remained less than in the contralateral soleus control muscle. SOLT and control soleus muscles responded with a significant glycogen depletion to an epinephrine dose two orders of magnitude less than the lowest dose affecting glycogen levels in EDLT and extensor digitorum longus muscles. These results indicate that transplanted muscles are capable of regenerating normal glycogenolytic responses and that the sensitivity of the response observed depends on the site of transplantation and is related to the type of innervation and histochemical fiber type.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to compare dexamethasone-induced glycogen increases in normal EDL and SOL muscles with that in free muscle grafts. Glycogen in mature EDL and SOL grafts in the rat equalled control concentrations irrespective of whether the graft was a nerve-intact (NI), nerve-crushed (NC), reimplanted, or cross-transplanted graft. The grafts also possessed the glycogen-regulatory mechanisms to respond to the glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DEX), which increases muscle glycogen. The increase in glycogen induced by DEX in the EDL and SOL grafts resembled that of the EDL and SOL muscles, respectively, whether the grafted muscle was originally an EDL or SOL. DEX induced an approximate twofold increase in glycogen concentration in control muscles and nerve-intact SOL grafts, and a smaller but significant increase in all other free grafts. Nerve crushing prior to grafting resulted in no significant change in muscle weight, glycogen concentration, or DEX-induced glycogen increase in these grafts. The data suggest that skeletal muscle grafts are qualitatively similar to normal muscles in terms of metabolic responsiveness to hormones. Leaving the nerve intact during grafting quantitatively enhances the graft's hormonal sensitivity but the technique of nerve crushing prior to grafting has no such effect.  相似文献

The cooperative nature of the binding between polycytidylate and the oligoinosinates I(pI)5–10 has been determined. Using the data of Tazawa, Tazawa, and Ts'o, it is shown that knowledge of the slope of the adsorption isothern allows one to determine the oligomer-polymer binidng constant, the oligomer–oligomer interaction constant, and the average degree of association (cooperative clustering) of the oligomers on the polymer. Knowledge of the above equilibrium constants as a function of temperature yields the respective thermodynamic parameters; no assumptions need to be made about the nature of the equilibrium constants or the thermodynamic parameters. For very long chains of polycytidylate, simple, explicit relations are given for the determination of the equilibrium constants involved. For finite chains of polycytidylate, the calculation of a single graph for each oligomer and polymer size allows the equilibrium constants to be determined for all experimental conditions of temperature and concentration. We find that the enthalpy and entropy of binding an oligomer n, bases to be δHn = ±13.7 ? n(6.65) and δSn = +32.5 ? n(18.8) given, respectively, in kcal/mole and e.u.; these parameters predict a melting temperature of 81°C for the poly(I)·poly(C) complex compared with the experimental value of 75°C. If the enthalpy is interpreted as arising from a sum of hydrogen bonding and stacking interactions, then the enthalpy of stacking is ?13.7 kcal/mole while the enthalpy of hydrogen bonding is +7 ± 4 kcal/mole; the positive enthalpy of hydrogen bonding presumably is a result of the fact that in the inosine-cytosine base pair, only two of the three sites on cytosine can hydrogen bond, the third being blocked from hydrogen bonding with water. The enthalpy of interaction between neighboring bound oligomers is found to be ?10.4 kcal/mole while the corresponding entropy is ?26.1 e.u. The binding is bound to be cooperative, though the extent of clustering varies markedly with temperature; the average number of oligomers in a cluster on the polymer is found to about five at a melting temperature of 25°C. The approach and equations given have generally applicability to oligomer-polymer associations.  相似文献

The Bay of Quinte receives drainage from several large river systems, including the Moira River which carried sediment from mines into the Bay from the 1880s to the 1960s. We are investigating possible metal contamination of submerged weed beds and marsh biota which may contribute to the low diversity and biomass of macrophyte beds and Typha marshes in the Bay. In 1987, sediment, macrophytes and snails were sampled in wetlands close to the Moira River and at Hay Bay (part of the Bay of Quinte presumably unaffected by mine effluents) located 20 km from the Moira. Some element concentrations in sediment and biota were determined by neutron activation analysis (NAA) including Al, As, Br, Ca, Co, Cl, Cr, Cs, Fe, Hf, K, La, Na, Mg, Sb, Sc, Rb, Ta, Th, Ti, U, V and Zn. Other elements were analysed by acid dissolution and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) including Ag, As, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Levels of As in sediments and plants were higher close to the Moira River, whereas Cu and Ni showed the opposite pattern in sediments. The usefulness of species as bioassays differed: Stagnicola elodes Say accumulated significantly higher levels of Cu (35 vs 18 ppm) and V (l. l vs 0.5 ppm) than Planorbella trivolvis Say collected from the same sites. The macrophyte, Myriophyllum spicatum L. acted as an accumulator of Pb (up to 9.6 ppm), whereas Pb in Vallisneria americana Michx. at the same sites was undetectable.  相似文献
