This study aimed to evaluate environmental influences on fish distribution and to assess the extent to which concepts in river
ecology accommodate levels of spatio-temporal heterogeneity of fish assemblages in a 1,080-km long tropical river. A total
of 25 sites were sampled between November 2002 and March 2003 in two seasons (summer/wet versus winter/dry). A thermal gradient
separating the upper reaches from the lower reaches was detected. The middle-upper reaches showed higher conductivity and
lower dissolved oxygen and pH levels compared with the other reaches. Although some significant associations were found between
some fish abundance and environmental variables, the most abundant species (Tilapia rendalli, Geophagus brasiliensis, and Oligosarcus hepsetus) occurred in most sites and under most environmental conditions. Fish community structure varied more in space (longitudinal)
than through time (seasonal). The community in the lower reach species was more diverse in comparison with the other reaches.
Differences in the fish assemblage structure among the longitudinal river sections appear to have been influenced by the effects
of damming, and seem to be partially consistent with the Serial Discontinuity Concept, which views dams as discontinuities
within the river continuum. Only the lower river reach showed seasonal differences in the fish community structure, attributable
to the influence of flooding. Management plans and biodiversity conservation will benefit by considering the effects of dam
disruption and flood increased connectivity to the lotic systems.

Metalloproteinases (MMP) belong to the family of cation dependent endopeptidases that degrade matrices at physiological pH and to cleave extracellular matrix proteins. They play an important role in diverse physiological and pathological processes; not only there diverse types of MMP differ in structure and functionally, but also their enzymatic activity is regulated at multiple levels. Trying to shed some light over the processes that govern the pathology of African Trypanosomiasis, the aim of the present study was to examine the proteolytic activity of the crude trypanosome protein extract obtained from the bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei brucei parasites. We hereby report the partial biochemical characterization of a neutral Trypanosoma brucei-metalloproteinase that displays marked proteolytic activities on gelatin and casein, with a molecular mass of approximately 40 kDa, whose activity is strongly dependent of pH and temperature. Furthermore, we show that this activity can be inhibited by classical MMP inhibitors such as EDTA, EGTA, phenantroline, and also by tetracycline and derivatives. This study has a relevant role in the search for new therapeutical targets, for the use of metalloproteinases inhibitors as treatment strategies, or as enhancement to trypanocidal drugs used in the treatment of the disease. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the larvicidal activity, and sub lethal effects of entomopathogenic bacteria Brevibacillus laterosporus, Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki, and a commercial formulation of Bacillus sphaericus on Musca domestica. Bacterial suspensions were prepared in different concentrations and added to the diet of newly-hatched larvae which were monitored until the adult stage. The larvae were susceptible to the B. laterosporus, B. thuringiensis var. israelensis, and B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki bacteria in varied concentration levels. These bacteria have larvicidal and sub lethal effects on the development of flies, reducing both adult size, and impairing the reproductive performance of the species. 相似文献

Peptides are biomolecules that may have several biological activities which makes them important to the environment in which they operate. Sometimes it is necessary for larger amounts of peptides to carry out some studies, like biological tests, NMR structural research or even interaction studies between peptides with other molecules. Expression can be an alternative for that. However, synthesis is specially useful when unnatural modifications or introduction of site specific tags are required. Synthetic peptides have been used for different studies such as cell signaling, development of epitope-specific antibodies, in cell-biology, biomarkers for diseases etc. Many different methodologies for peptide synthesis can be found in the literature. Solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) has been largely used and can be an excellent alternative to achieve larger quantities of these biomolecules. In this mini review, we aim to describe the SPPS and explain some of the mechanistic aspects and reagents involved in all phases of the synthesis: the use of resin, the ninhydrin test, some of the protecting groups, coupling reagents for peptide bond formation and the cleavage process. 相似文献

A method is described for rapid multiplication from axillary buds of six Mentha species. Nodal segments from one-year old plants were grown on Murashige and Skoog medium (BMS), supplemented with BAP (1.0; 2.0 mg/l) and KIN (1.0 mg/l) and kept at 28 ± 1°C under fluorescent light for 30 days.
