Aquatic macrophyte species richness (SR) was examined at 430 sites in the central Canadian region in relation to water body type, bottom substrate and 8 water chemistry parameters. SR was highest in rivers and lakes, intermediate in creeks, and lowest in ponds. The highest values occurred where granitic bedrock, highly organic substrates or sand predominated. SR was significantly inversely correlated in the study area as a whole with 7 of the water chemistry parameters; of these, total alkalinity was the most important. However, the relative importance of the respective parameters differed for various water body types. The relationship between SR and phosphorus was positive in ponds, but negative for all other water body types. Stepwise sultiple regression analysis identified phosphorus, total alkalinity and dissolved organic matter as important factors in ponds; sulphate, total alkalinity and chloride in lakes, and sulphate and phosphorus in lotic habitats. Log transformations improved the correlations for some variables. However, the water chemistry parameters examined accounted for less than half of the total variability in SR. Apparently SR depends on many different factors, including surface areaand bottom type, whose relative contributions vary with situation.  相似文献

Sir Philip Sidney games are a widely used model of simple signaling. Johnstone and Grafen [Johnstone, R.A., Grafen, A., 1993. Dishonesty and the handicap principle. Animal Behaviour 46, 759–764] present a version in which the Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS) is for most signalers to “honestly” signal, with a small minority of signalers who “cheat”. This model is among the most frequently cited papers on the topic of “dishonest” signaling and supports the view that signals may be “dishonest” as long as they are “honest on average”. Using genetic algorithms, we demonstrate that another solution exists to the game, an evolutionarily stable set of Nash equilibria in which members of the set never signal and all donors give their resource. Payoffs to players using this set of strategies is greater those when playing the “dishonest” signaling ESS. We demonstrate that a random population is far more likely to evolve to this non-communicating strategy set than the “dishonest” signaling ESS. We also discuss the dynamics of biological game theory models and the advances of genetic algorithms as a heuristic solution method for these models.  相似文献

There is some evidence to suggest that exposure to mobile phones (MPs) can affect neural activity, particularly in response to auditory stimuli. The current investigation (n = 120) aimed to test recent findings in this area, namely that N100 amplitude and latency would decrease, and that P300 latency and reaction time (RT) would increase under active relative to sham exposure during an auditory task. Visual measures were also explored. A double blind, counterbalanced, crossover design was employed where subjects attended two sessions 1 week apart. In both sessions participants (1) performed auditory and visual oddball tasks while electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded with a MP set to sham exposure mounted over the temporal region, and (2) performed the same tasks while the handset was set to active/sham. When active, the MP transmitted for 30 min at 895 MHz (average power 250 mW, pulse modulated at 217 Hz, average SAR 0.11 W/kg). Paired t-tests compared difference scores from the sham/sham session to those from the sham/active condition. The study was designed to detect differences of 1\4 of a standard deviation with a power of 0.80. There was no significant difference between exposure conditions for any auditory or visual event related potential (ERP) component or RT. As previous positive findings were not replicated, it was concluded that there is currently no evidence that acute MP exposure affects these indices of brain activity.  相似文献

Recent experiments, showing that both cranial paraxial and splanchnic mesoderm contribute to branchiomeric muscle and cardiac outflow tract (OFT) myocardium, revealed unexpected complexity in development of these muscle groups. The Pitx2 homeobox gene functions in both cranial paraxial mesoderm, to regulate eye muscle, and in splanchnic mesoderm to regulate OFT development. Here, we investigated Pitx2 in branchiomeric muscle. Pitx2 was expressed in branchial arch core mesoderm and both Pitx2 null and Pitx2 hypomorphic embryos had defective branchiomeric muscle. Lineage tracing with a Pitx2cre allele indicated that Pitx2 mutant descendents moved into the first branchial arch. However, markers of both undifferentiated core mesoderm and specified branchiomeric muscle were absent. Moreover, lineage tracing with a Myf5cre allele indicated that branchiomeric muscle specification and differentiation were defective in Pitx2 mutants. Conditional inactivation in mice and manipulation of Pitx2 expression in chick mandible cultures revealed an autonomous function in expansion and survival of branchial arch mesoderm.  相似文献

The mechanisms through which Schistosoma mansoni larvae induce Th1 rather than Th2 immune responses are not well understood. In this study, using CD154-/- mice exposed to radiation-attenuated S. mansoni larvae, we demonstrate roles for CD154/CD40 in the activation of skin-derived APCs and the development of Th1 cells in the skin-draining lymph nodes (sdLN). The presence of CD154 was important for optimal IL-12p40 and essential for Ag-specific IFN-gamma, but CD154 expression by wild-type CD4- cells was insufficient to rescue recall responses of CD4+ cells from CD154-/- mice. This defect is probably due to impaired CD40-dependent IL-12 production in vivo, because administration of anti-CD40 Ab, or rIL-12, restored IFN-gamma production by sdLN cells from CD154-/- mice. CD154 ligation of CD40 was not required for the migration of skin-derived APCs, but did have a limited role in their maturation (increased MHC II and CD86). Unexpectedly, although CD4 cells from CD154-/- mice were deficient in their ability to produce IFN-gamma, they produced significant amounts of IL-4 and IL-5 in the presence of skin-derived APCs from wild-type and CD154-/- mice. Thus, in contrast to IFN-gamma, the production of Th2-associated cytokines is (in this model) independent of CD154. We conclude that whereas the priming of Th1 responses soon after exposure to schistosome larvae is completely CD40/CD154 dependent, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 are independent of CD154, suggesting a dichotomy in the specific mechanisms that induce these cytokines by CD4+ cells in the sdLN.  相似文献

Abstract. The mechanisms involved in introduction, maintenance and perpetuation of epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) in South Africa are not fully understood. This paper reports on the susceptibility of South African livestock associated Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) species to oral infection with eight EHDV serotypes. Virus was recovered from eight of 17 field-collected Culicoides species 10 days after oral feeding on blood/virus mixtures. Six EHDV serotypes were recovered from C. (Avaritia) imicola Kieffer, and seven serotypes were recovered from C. (A.) bolitinos Meiswinkel. Virus recovery rates in C. imicola ranged from 0.4% for EHDV 2 to 14.4% for EHDV 7, and in C. bolitinos from 0.6% for EHDV 6 to 12.3% for EHDV 2. There was a significant difference in virus recovery rates between serotypes in both species. Other Culicoides species that yielded EHDV after 10 days extrinsic incubation included C. (Meijerehelea) leucostictus Kieffer, C. (Culicoides) magnus Colaço, C. (Beltranmyia) nivosus de Meillon, C. (A.) gulbenkiani Caeiro, C. (Hoffmania) zuluensis de Meillon and C. onderstepoortensis Fiedler. Culicoides midges shown in this study to be susceptible to oral infection with EHDV are widely distributed in South Africa but differ considerably in their abundance, host preference and breeding sites.  相似文献

Cadmium, copper and lead concentrations were surveyed in several species of submerged aquatic macrophytes in a Precambrian Shield Lake. Values were variable within each species and interspecific differences in metal concentration were not significant over the season as a whole. Cadmium concentration increased during the season in Potamogeton foliosus and Myriophyllum exalbescens, while copper and lead declined in P. foliosus. No identifiable seasonal trends were seen in P. zosteriformis and P. robbinsii. In P. foliosus, copper and lead concentrations increased with water depth. Few significant correlations were found between metal concentrations in the shoots and each of several water chemistry parameters, temperature, and shoot chlorophyll, soluble sugar and starch content. Roots yielded greater metal concentrations than shoots.  相似文献
