Demographic parameters such as survival, sex ratio and abundance can profoundly affect the viability of populations and thus are of primary importance in species of conservation concern. Although numerous studies have been published on certain aspects of the ecology and evolution of the endangered Large Blue butterfly Maculinea arion, there is still a lack of detailed knowledge on its populations’ demography. Moreover, M. arion populates a variety of xerothermic habitats throughout its European range using various food plants and host ants, which leads to complications in its conservation. Our aim was to estimate demographic parameters of M. arion populations in different parts of its European range. Detailed mark-recapture sampling was conducted on populations in four different countries. We often found that daily apparent survival probability declined with increasing age of individuals, but there was no difference between male and female survival. In smaller populations, the sex ratio was rather female-biased. Our most interesting result was the lack of protandry in some populations that might be a consequence of selection against reproductive asynchrony in small populations or a polyandrous mating system. The perfect coincidence of male and female phenology can positively affect the effective population size, because the lack of reproductive asynchrony increases the chance of male–female encounters. Abundance of the studied populations ranged between 100 and 1,600 individuals, smaller populations were on the verge of extinction. Habitat of the threatened small populations was either overgrazed or abandoned, while habitat of larger, stable populations was lightly grazed.  相似文献

Although interactions between alien and native plant species are well studied, data on interactions between two co-existing alien species with respect to their invasibility are scarce. The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate three factors shaping abundance of the alien shrub species Cornus alternifolia: abundance of another alien (invasive) shrub species (Prunus serotina), type of tree stand (coniferous vs. broadleaved) and distance to propagule sources and (2) to assess the potential dispersal distance of the species studied. Densities of both species were assessed within 194 experimental plots (located in experimental plantations of trees) in Rogów Arboretum (Central Poland). P. serotina occurred on 79 and C. alternifolia on 33 of the 194 plots. The furthest distance of C. alternifolia from the propagule source was 338 m. C. alternifolia reached higher densities in coniferous than broadleaved tree stands. Density of C. alternifolia depended on tree stand type and distance from the propagule source, but did not depend on density of P. serotina. Density of C. alternifolia decreased with increasing distance from the propagule source; however, this relationship was modified by the type of tree stand: densities were lower in broadleaved than in coniferous stands. The presence of the invasive species seems to neither facilitate nor limit the dispersal distance of C. alternifolia, as these two species differ in shade tolerance. The study also provided the first information about C. alternifolia potential invasiveness, because earlier this species was noticed only as casually escaping from cultivation in Slovakia.  相似文献

Evolutionary accounts of human traits are often based on proxies for genetic fitness (e.g., number of sex partners, facial attractiveness). Instead of using proxies, actual differences in reproductive success is a more direct measure of Darwinian fitness. Certain voice acoustics such as fundamental frequency and measures of health such as handgrip strength correlate with proxies of fitness, yet there are few studies showing the relation of these traits to reproduction. Here, we explore whether the fundamental frequency of the voice and handgrip strength account for differences in actual reproduction among a population of natural fertility humans. Our results show that both fundamental frequency and handgrip strength predict several measures of reproductive success among a group of indigenous Namibian females, particularly amongst the elderly, with weight also predicting reproductive outcomes among males. These findings demonstrate that both hormonally regulated and phenotypic quality markers can be used as measures of Darwinian fitness among humans living under conditions that resemble the evolutionary environment of Homo sapiens. We also argue that these findings provide support for the Grandmother Hypothesis.  相似文献

Non-additivity of base-base interactions in all ten possible model dinucleotide steps were analyzed on MP2/aug-cc-pvDZ quantum chemistry level. Conformations of four nucleobases exactly matched to ones occurring in B-DNA crystals. In most of thw 162 analyzed tetramers both three- and four-body contributions are negligible except for d(GpG) steps. However, in these dinucleotides both contributions are always of opposite signs and in all cases the sum of all non-additive part of intermolecular interactions do not exceed 2.6 kcal mol-1. This stands for less than 5% of the overall binding energy of dinucleotide steps. Also replacements of guanine with 8-oxoguanine in d(GpG) systems introduces non-additivity of the same magnitude as for canonical dinucleotides. It is observed linear relationships between values of total binding energy obtained in the tetramer basis set and estimated energy exclusively in dimers basis sets with assumption of pairwise additivities. For all analyzed dinucleotides steps there are also linear correlations between amount of non-additive contributions and magnitude of pairs interactions. Based on differences in electrostatic contribution to the total binding energy of four nucleobases and polarity of dinucleotide steps three distinct classes of dinucleotide steps were identified.  相似文献

The group of 96 strains ofEscherichia coli isolated from children with diarrhea were investigated towards the presence and polymorphism of genes encoding autotransporters that belong to the group of proteins named SPATE (Serine Protease Autotransporters ofEnterobacteriaceae). Based on the results of restriction analysis of the products of PCR reaction 8 different types of genes encoding SPATE were detected. It was found that 39 strains contained one gene of SPATE, 15 strains contained two different genes and 3 different genes were detected in the case of 3 strains. The analysis of combination of presence of genes encoding SPATE let us divide the investigated group of strains into 17 different genotypes. The analysis of polymorphism of genes encoding SPATE seems to be very promising tool for exploring the genetic diversity among pathogenic E. coli.  相似文献

Background  

A major challenge in evolutionary biology is to understand the typically complex interactions between diverse counter-balancing factors of Darwinian selection for size assortative mating and sexual size dimorphism. It appears that rarely a simple mechanism could provide a major explanation of these phenomena. Mechanics of behaviors can predict animal morphology, such like adaptations to locomotion in animals from various of taxa, but its potential to predict size-assortative mating and its evolutionary consequences has been less explored. Mate-grasping by males, using specialized adaptive morphologies of their forelegs, midlegs or even antennae wrapped around female body at specific locations, is a general mating strategy of many animals, but the contribution of the mechanics of this wide-spread behavior to the evolution of mating behavior and sexual size dimorphism has been largely ignored.  相似文献

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) from patients with rheumatoid arthritis elicit spontaneous proliferation of autologous T cells in an HLA-DR and CD47 costimulation-dependent manner. T cell costimulation through CD47 is attributed to specific interaction with thrombospondin-1 (TSP1), a CD47 ligand displayed on FLS. CD47 binding by FLS has broad biological impact that includes adhesion and the triggering of specific costimulatory signals. TSP1(+) FLS are highly adhesive to T cells and support their aggregation and growth in situ. Long-term cultures of T cells and FLS form heterotypic foci that are amenable to propagation without exogenous growth factors. T cell adhesion and aggregate formation on TSP1(+) FLS substrates are inhibited by CD47-binding peptides. In contrast, FLS from arthroscopy controls lack adhesive or T cell growth-promoting activities. CD47 stimulation transduces a costimulatory signal different from that of CD28, producing a gene expression profile that included induction of ferritin L chain, a component of the inflammatory response. Ferritin L chain augments CD3-induced proliferation of T cells. Collectively, these results demonstrate the active role of FLS in the recruitment, activation, and expansion of T cells in a CD47-dependent manner. Because TSP1 is abundantly expressed in the rheumatoid synovium, CD47-TSP1 interaction is proposed to be a key component of an FLS/T cell regulatory circuit that perpetuates the inflammatory process in the rheumatoid joint.  相似文献

Spindles - a hallmark of stage II sleep - are a transient oscillatory phenomenon in the EEG believed to reflect thalamocortical activity contributing to unresponsiveness during sleep. Currently spindles are often classified into two classes: fast spindles, with a frequency of around 14 Hz, occurring in the centro-parietal region; and slow spindles, with a frequency of around 12 Hz, prevalent in the frontal region. Here we aim to establish whether the spindle generation process also exhibits spatial heterogeneity. Electroencephalographic recordings from 20 subjects were automatically scanned to detect spindles and the time occurrences of spindles were used for statistical analysis. Gamma distribution parameters were fit to each inter-spindle interval distribution, and a modified Wald-Wolfowitz lag-1 correlation test was applied. Results indicate that not all spindles are generated by the same statistical process, but this dissociation is not spindle-type specific. Although this dissociation is not topographically specific, a single generator for all spindle types appears unlikely.  相似文献

Polypodium vulgare L. is a desiccation-tolerant fern that can withstand successive dry periods in its life cycle. To better understand this mechanism, the current study was undertaken to assess the role of phenolic compounds in rhizome dehydration and determine their localisation in the rhizome cells after enforced dehydration in mannitol solution or controlled desiccation with or without abscisic acid (ABA) pretreatment. Phenolic distribution at the subcellular level was studied using gold particle-complexed laccase. Cells from different tissues: cortical parenchyma, endodermis and stelar elements--pericycle, sieve cells and vascular parenchyma were observed under a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The content of phenolic compounds was greater in ABA-untreated rhizomes after enforced dehydration in mannitol solution and subsequent rehydration. After controlled desiccation the phenolic content significantly increased in ABA-untreated rhizomes. A large number of phenolic compound deposits were present in all types of rhizomatous cells. Phenolics were widely distributed in the vacuoles of all cells, and in the secondary cell walls of sieve cells, although scattered labelling was hardly ever observed in the primary cell walls. In dehydrated and plasmolysed cells from the cortex and endodermis, phenolic compounds were present in the apoplastic compartments between the plasma membranes and the cell walls. There is evidence that abscisic acid plays a role as a crucial antioxidant resulting in no damage and a lower level of phenolic increase as compared to ABA-untreated rhizomes. Moreover, the location of phenolics suggests a protective chemical barrier against environmental stresses.  相似文献
