Studies have shown that symptomatic infection by Giardia lamblia causes acute or chronic diarrhea, dehydration, abdominal pain and malabsorption, leading to undernutrition and weight loss. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of giardiasis and its combination with a low-protein diet on the intestinal absorption of glucose and electrolytes in gerbils. The intestinal absorption of glucose, sodium and potassium was investigated in male gerbils weighing 46-64 g (n≥5). A Tyrode solution containing twice the glucose, sodium and potassium concentration (pH 7.4) was infused through the intestinal loops for 40 min. Glucose absorption was not significantly affected by diet and infection. However, there was a significant increase in sodium absorption in the Giardia-infected group (57.2±6.1, p<0.05) in comparison to the control, low-protein diet and low-protein diet+Giardia-infected groups (8.9±6.5, 2.8±11.1 and 0.8±7.9, respectively; p<0.05). Moreover, potassium was absorbed in the Giardia-infected group (0.45±0.30), while the other groups exhibited potassium secretion. A low-protein diet and Giardia infection had no influence over glucose absorption. However, Giardia infection increased sodium and potassium uptake, suggesting a compensatory mechanism for maintaining homeostasis after likely hypernatremia and hypokalemia caused by the diarrhea that accompanies giardiasis.  相似文献

The taxonomy of Iberian and North African wall lizards (Podarcis sp.) has been controversial. Recently, morphological and mtDNA sequence data have provided new information on differentiation within these lacertids. To compare these results to those provided by nuclear markers, we investigated variation at 11 polymorphic protein loci using conventional electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing in 11 populations belonging to seven different mtDNA lineages. A total of 62 alleles were found. Populations belonging to the same mtDNA type presented high genetic similarity, whereas strong differentiation was observed between groups. These results are consistent with those previously obtained from morphological and mtDNA analysis and support the idea that Iberian and North African Podarcis are composed of several well-differentiated entities, some of which are already recognized as species, whereas others (belonging to the P. hispanica complex) clearly need taxonomic revision.  相似文献

In this work we study the connection between some dynamic effects at the synaptic level and fast reorganization of cortical sensory maps. By using a biologically plausible computational model of the primary somatosensory system we obtained simulation results that can be used to relate the dynamics of the interactions of excitatory and inhibitory neurons to the process of somatotopic map reorganization immediately after peripheral lesion. The model consists of three regions integrated into a single structure: tactile receptors representing the glabrous surface of the hand, ventral posterior lateral nucleus of the thalamus and area 3b of the primary somatosensory cortex, reproducing the main aspects of the connectivity of these regions. By applying informational measures to the simulation results of the dynamic behavior of AMPA, NMDA and GABA synaptic conductances we draw some conjectures about how the several neuronal synaptic elements are related to the initial stage of the digit-induced reorganization of the hand map in the somatosensory cortex.  相似文献

This work reports on the treatment of partially soluble wastewater in an anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor, containing biomass immobilized on polyurethane matrices and stirred mechanically. The results showed that agitation provided optimal mixing and improved the overall organic matter consumption rates. The system showed to be feasible to enhance the treatment of partially soluble wastewaters.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate oocyte recovery and embryo yield using two different ovarian follicular aspiration schedules in donor cows of the Gir breed. Pluriparous, non-lactating Gir cows (n = 14) were randomly allocated to one of two groups, one of which had aspirations of ovarian follicular contents conducted once a week (TVFA-1x) and the other twice weekly (TVFA-2x), for nine consecutive weeks. Before follicle aspiration, follicular population was recorded in three classes according to size (> 6 mm, 6-9 mm and > 9 mm). The cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) recovered were identified, morphologically classified and in vitro matured, fertilized with Gir sperm and cultured in CR2 medium for 7 days. There was no difference (P > 0.05) in the size of the largest follicle, number of follicles identified or follicular content aspirations between TVFA-1x and TVFA-2x groups. Large follicles (> 9 mm) were observed for all the aspiration intervals considered (3, 4 or 7 days). More oocytes were recovered per session in TVFA-1x as compared with TVFA-2x (8.9 +/- 0.8 versus 7.0 +/- 0.7, P < 0.01), resulting in a greater recovery rate in this group (74.3% versus 58.7%, P < 0.01). More COCs of Grade I were recovered from TVFA-2x (22.6% versus 13.3%, P < 0.01). There was no difference in cleavage rate between groups, but the percentage of embryos that reached the blastocyst stage was greater in TVFA-2x as compared with the TVFA-1x (31.8% versus 21.6%, P < 0.01). The greater in vitro performance qualities of TVFA-2x oocytes compensates for the greater oocyte recovery rate in TVFA-1x, demonstrating a greater embryo production potential. Despite showing uncommon follicular dynamics characteristics when subjected to follicular aspiration, Gir cows can be successfully used as oocyte donors for in vitro embryo production.  相似文献

The administration of bradykinin may attenuate ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury by acting on B(2)Rs. Blockade of B(2)R has also been shown to ameliorate lesions associated with I/R injury. In an attempt to explain these contradictory results, the objective of the present work was to investigate the role of and interaction between B(1) and B(2) receptors in a model of intestinal I/R injury in mice. The bradykinin B(2)R antagonist (HOE 140) inhibited reperfusion-induced inflammatory tissue injury and delayed lethality. After I/R, there was an increase in the expression of B(1)R mRNA that was prevented by HOE 140. In mice that were deficient in B(1)Rs (B(1)R(-/-) mice), inflammatory tissue injury was abrogated, and lethality was delayed and partially prevented. Pretreatment with HOE 140 reversed the protective anti-inflammatory and antilethality effects provided by the B(1)R(-/-) phenotype. Thus, B(2)Rs are a major driving force for B(1)R activation and consequent induction of inflammatory injury and lethality. In contrast, activation of B(2)Rs may prevent exacerbated tissue injury and lethality, an effect unmasked in B(1)R(-/-) mice and likely dependent on the vasodilatory actions of B(2)Rs. Blockade of B(1)Rs could be a more effective strategy than B(2) or B(1)/B(2) receptor blockade for the treatment of the inflammatory injuries that follow I/R.  相似文献

The frequency distribution of the CCR5-delta32, CCR2-64I, and SDF1-3'A alleles was studied in the urban population of Belém and in Afro-Brazilians, Amerindians, and Japanese immigrants in the state of Pará, Brazil. Diepoxybutane (DEB) is an alkylating agent that can be used to assess chromosome instability in repair-deficient subjects. Previous authors investigated the role of red blood cells (RBC) in determining individual susceptibility to DEB in normal healthy donors, and demonstrated that a polymorphic enzyme in RBC, Glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1), is involved in DEB detoxification. In the present work we studied the influence of individual GSTM1 and GSTT1 genotypes and the presence of RBC on the frequency of DEB-induced chromosome breakage in lymphocyte cultures from normal individuals and, in particular, the influence of isolated components of RBC: RBC membranes, RBC lysate, and haemoglobin. Our results confirm that individual GSTT1 genotypes modulate the level of genetic lesions induced by DEB; however, this effect was not sufficient to explain the highly significant variation in chromosome breakage between whole blood and RBC-depleted cultures. We showed that RBC can protect cultured lymphocytes against chromosome breakage induced by DEB and we demonstrated the particular role of haemoglobin in the protective effect.  相似文献

Cell surface proteins of Trypanosoma dionisii, Trypanosoma vespertilionis and Trypanosoma sp. (M238) were radiodinated and their distribution both in the detergent-poor (DPP) and detergent-enriched phase (DRP) was studied using a phase separation technique in Triton X-114, as well as polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS-PAGE). Significant differences were observed in the proteins present in the DRP when the three species of trypanosoma were compared. Two major bands with 88 and 70 KDa were observed in T. sp. (M238) but were not detectable in T. dionisii and T. vespertilionis. Three polypeptides with 96, 77 and 60 KDa were identified in the DRP of T. vespertilionis. Three major bands with 84, 72 and 60 KDa were observed in the DRP of T. dionisii. Two polypeptides with 34-36 KDa present in the DPP, were observed in the three Trypanosome species analyzed. Our observations show that T. sp. (M238) has characteristic surface polypeptides not found in T. dionisii and T. vespertilionis.  相似文献

Abstract Two chronosequences of unsaturated, buried loess sediments, ranging in age from <10,000 years to >1 million years, were investigated to reconstruct patterns of microbial ecological succession that have occurred since sediment burial. The relative importance of microbial transport and survival to succession was inferred from sediment ages, porewater ages, patterns of abundance (measured by direct counts, counts of culturable cells, and total phospholipid fatty acids), activities (measured by radiotracer and enzyme assays), and community composition (measured by phospholipid fatty acid patterns and Biolog substrate usage). Core samples were collected at two sites 40 km apart in the Palouse region of eastern Washington State, near the towns of Washtucna and Winona. The Washtucna site was flooded multiple times during the Pleistocene by glacial outburst floods; the Winona site elevation is above flood stage. Sediments at the Washtucna site were collected from near surface to 14.9 m depth, where the sediment age was approximately 250 ka and the porewater age was 3700 years; sample intervals at the Winona site ranged from near surface to 38 m (sediment age: approximately 1 Ma; porewater age: 1200 years). Microbial abundance and activities declined with depth at both sites; however, even the deepest, oldest sediments showed evidence of viable microorganisms. Same-age sediments had equal quantities of microorganisms, but different community types. Differences in community makeup between the two sites can be attributed to differences in groundwater recharge and paleoflooding. Estimates of the microbial community age can be constrained by porewater and sediment ages. In the shallower sediments (<9 m at Washtucna, <12 m at Winona), the microbial communities are likely similar in age to the groundwater; thus, microbial succession has been influenced by recent transport of microorganisms from the surface. In the deeper sediments, the populations may be considerably older than the porewater ages, since microbial transport is severely restricted in unsaturated sediments. This is particularly true at the Winona site, which was never flooded.  相似文献
