Seasonal variation in phytoplankton size classes was studied over the period of a year in a small, mesotrophic, brown-water lake. Throughout the sampling period, species from 2–16 μm (GALD) dominated the phytoplankten community. Small phytoplankters (2–8 μm) were predominant in winter and early spring populations while algae of 8–16 μm became important in summer (phytoplankton < 2 μm was not counted). Principal coordinate analysis resulted in a cyclic pattern of dates in the reduced space, winter and early spring samples being well separated from the other dates. In multiple linear regressions between environmental parameters and size classes, temperature was always the most important variable.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an investigation which lasted three years, on the effects of impounding a river on its zooplankton community. Forty zooplankton samples were collected from the Desaulniers River and from a string bog (53°35N, 77°35W) in 1976 before impoundment. Sampling was also conducted in 1977 (331 samples) and 1978 (153 samples) during and after impoundment. The population dynamics of zooplankton show different patterns in 1977 and 1978. The main impacts of impoundment on the river and the bog communities are the increase of the population density, particulary of Rotifera and Copepoda, the increase of the number of species of Rotifera and the increase of the diversity indices based on numbers and biomass. These changes are observed at each sampling station. The total biomass increases in lotic stations but decreases in the string bog because the density and the biomass of Cladocera increases in the river but drops in the bog. Results are compared to those obtained in natural lakes and bog of the same area and to those published in other studies.

Zooplankton spatial heterogeneity has profound effects on understanding and modelling of zooplankton population dynamics and interactions with other planktonic compartments, and consequently, on the structure and function of planktonic ecosystems. On the one hand, zooplankton heterogeneity at spatial and temporal scales of ecological interest is an important focus of aquatic ecology research because of its implications in models of productivity, herbivory, nutrient cycling and trophic interactions in planktonic ecosystems. On the other hand, estimating zooplankton spatial variation at the scale of an ecosystem, is a powerful tool to achieve accurate sampling design. This review concentrates on the spatial heterogeneity of marine and freshwater zooplankton with respect to scale. First to be examined are the concept of spatial heterogeneity, the sampling and statistical methods used to estimate zooplankton heterogeneity, and the scales at which marine and freshwater zooplankton heterogeneity occurs. Then, the most important abiotic and biotic processes driving zooplankton heterogeneity over a range of spatial scales are presented and illustrated by studies conducted over large and fine scales in both oceans and lakes. Coupling between abiotic and biotic processes is finally discussed in the context of the multiple driving forces hypothesis.Studies of zooplankton spatial heterogeneity refer both to the quantification of the degree of heterogeneity (measured heterogeneity) and to the estimation of the heterogeneity resulting from the interactions between the organisms and their environment (functional heterogeneity) (Kolasa & Rollo, 1991). To resolve the problem of measuring zooplankton patchiness on a wide range of spatial scales, advanced technologies (acoustic devices, the Optical Plankton Counter (OPC), and video systems) have been developed and tested in marine and freshwater ecosystems. A comparison of their potential applications and limitations is presented. Furthermore, many statistical tools have been developed to estimate the degree of measured heterogeneity; the three types most commonly used are indices of spatial aggregation, variance: mean ratio, and spatial analysis methods. The variance partitioning method proposed by Borcard et al. (1992) is presented as a promising tool to assess zooplankton functional heterogeneity.Nested patchiness is a common feature of zooplankton communities and spatial heterogeneity occurs on a hierarchical continuum of scales in both marine and freshwater environments. Zooplankton patchiness is the product of many physical processes interacting with many biological processes. In marine systems, patterns of zooplankton patchiness at mega- to macro-scales are mostly linked to large advective vectorial processes whereas at coarse-, fine- and micro-scales, physical turbulence and migratory, reproductive and swarm behaviors act together to structure zooplankton distribution patterns. In freshwater environments, physical advective forces related to currents of various energy levels, and vertical stratification of lake interact with biological processes, especially with vertical migration, to structure zooplankton community over large to fine- and micro-scales. Henceforth, the zooplankton community must be perceived as a spatially well-structured and dynamic system that requires a combination of both abiotic and biotic explanatory factors for a better comprehension and more realistic and reliable predictions of its ecology.  相似文献

Short-term and spatial fluctuations in specific biovolumes (volume x cell−1) of different morphological categories of planktonic bacteria were estimated microscopically. Samples were taken from two lakes occurring in two different climatic systems: Lake Aydat (France) and Lake Cromwell (Canada). The study was done in summer, using 24-hour cycles of sampling. Due to their large size, the specific volume of filamentous bacteria constituted, on average, the major part (>70%) of the total specific volume of all bacterial forms considered. Greatest variations in specific biovolumes were recorded for filamentous bacteria (coefficients of variation ranged from 16 to 109%). These variations were more pronounced in the oxygenated and microaerophilic strata (DOC ≈1.5 mg liter−1). Fluctuations in cell volume were high (coefficients of variation =12–80%) for coccal bacteria, whereas no marked fluctuations were found for the rod and vibrio bacteria (coefficients of variation =4–10%). Evidence of diel patterns of cell volume of filamentous bacteria is provided. These cells displayed their maximum size during the day until early night, indicating cell division was occurring at night. Homogeneous circadian patterns were not provided by specific volume variations of coccal, rod, and vibrio bacteria. Statistical relationships between bacterial specific biovolumes and the biotic and abiotic parameters considered are discussed.  相似文献

The coupling between bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates(HNF) was examined in nine lakes of low productivity for evidenceof the effects of various metazooplankton (i.e. rotifers, cladoceransand copepods) on this relationship. We considered the size ofcladocerans and, in contrast to most previous across-systemstudies, the three strata of the water column (i.e. epilimnion, metalimnion and hypolimnion). Rotifers were numerically dominantin all lakes and accounted for 45–84% of total metazooplanktonabundance, while the abundance of large cladocerans was relativelylow, ranging from 0.066 to 15.2 ind. L–1. The across-lakerelationship between bacteria and HNF was significant in thedeeper strata (meta- and hypolimnion) but not in the epilimnionand in the two groups of lakes separated on the basis of theiraverage number of large cladocerans (<5 and >5 ind. L–1,respectively). The results confirmed the negative impacts oflarge cladocerans on HNF, but also showed that rotifers, probablythrough grazing on HNF, may be an important factor causing variationin the bacteria–HNF relationship in unproductive waters.Quadratic models best described the relationships between metazooplanktonand the ratio of bacteria to HNF. This ratio seemed to be aresult of complex interactions between several factors, includingthe zooplankton composition and abundance and the depth of thelake. Indeed, this ratio significantly decreased across lakes, with increase in depth. In addition, shallower lakes (having<5 large cladocerans L–1 and fewer Polyarthra vulgaris)tended to have more bacteria and HNF and a higher ratio of bacteriato HNF than deeper lakes (which had >5 large cladoceransL–1 and substantial proportions of P. vulgaris). We suggestthat the epilimnion, metalimnion and hypolimnion of lakes betaken into account when analysing the bacteria–HNF relationshipas well as the cascading effects of zooplankton on microbialcommunities.  相似文献

Biodiversity patterns in cladoceran communities were investigated in urban waterbodies in relation with residential land use, pond management, and waterbody environments. We evaluated species richness in the pelagic and littoral zones of eighteen waterbodies of a large Canadian city. Gamma diversity (26 species) observed at a small scale in the urban survey was important comparatively to large-scale surveys of lakes. Beta diversity ranged from 1 to 8 species among waterbodies. We tested if littoral species greatly contributed to regional diversity in urban waterbodies. Littoral species (Chydoridae, Ilyocryptidae, Macrothricidae, Polyphemidae) accounted for 58% of the total species pool. We distinguished five cladoceran assemblages associated to different waterbodies (temporary ponds, permanent lakes, and wetlands). Cladoceran communities were more diverse and variable in permanent lakes than in temporary ponds. Changes in cladoceran species assemblages among waterbodies were driven by variations in waterbody size and phosphorus enrichment, macrophyte and algal biomass, urban density, pond management practices, and the presence of potential predators as fish and macroinvertebrates. Our study indicates that both artificial ponds and lakes and natural wetlands are valuable habitats for the conservation of cladoceran biodiversity and rare endemic species in urban regions. Further research on pond management strategies promoting urban aquatic biodiversity should be undertaken.  相似文献

This study examined the formation of morphological defences by two coexisting Daphnia species, the large-sized D. pulicaria (2 mm) and the small-sized D. mendotae (1.4 mm), in response to the presence of young-of-the-year (YOY) yellow perch (Perca flavescens) and invertebrate predators (Chaoborus, Leptodora) during summer in a mesotrophic lake. We hypothesized that due to differential size-selective predation risk by YOY fish and invertebrates, the large-sized and the small-sized Daphnia species would show different morphological responses to predation threats. We followed changes in two morphological traits (relative length of the tail spine in D. pulicaria and of the helmet in D. mendotae) among different periods during summer according to YOY fish and invertebrate predation. We defined four YOY fish predation periods based on the presence of YOY perch in the pelagic zone of the lake and the relative abundance of Daphnia preys in their gut contents, and two invertebrate predation periods based on exclusive or mutual occurrence of the invertebrate predators. The large-sized (D. pulicaria) and the small-sized (D. mendotae) species showed different morphological responses to YOY fish and invertebrate predators, respectively. The tail spine ratio of the juveniles and adults of D. pulicaria did not change in response to YOY fish predation or to invertebrate predation. A gradual increase in the helmet ratio was observed in the small-sized D. mendotae over the summer period. This change was related to the co-occurrence of the invertebrate predators (Chaoborus and Leptodora) and to YOY fish predation. The warmer temperature cannot be accounted for helmet elongation since it was constant across depths, and not related with the co-occurrence of D. mendotae and YOY perch. Environmental heterogeneity plays a fundamental role in driving species distributions by, for one, fostering niche dimensionality. Within lake ecosystems, species distributions and concordance patterns are driven by both local and regional heterogeneity, though their relative importance across trophic levels has rarely been explored. We developed a statistical framework to compare responses of taxa from different trophic levels to abiotic factors and determine how this affected multi-trophic network structures. In particular, we used multi-species concordance modelling (concordance analysis and RV coefficient) to determine species associations and correlations within and among three trophic levels (phytoplankton, zooplankton and fish communities sampled across 49 southern Québec lakes, covering eight hydrological regions). We then used multiple factor analysis, latent variable modelling and local contributions of sites to beta diversity to assess the relative importance of major environmental gradients in structuring species co-responses and species interaction turnover across the landscape. Our analyses confirmed that concordant species within each trophic level varied jointly or segregated into different pelagic food webs in Québec lakes where important acidification and eutrophication took place. Some keynote species were indicators of different food web compartments and distinguished groups of lakes along multiple environmental niche dimensions. Among the three trophic levels examined, zooplankton depicted the highest proportion of species concordance and appeared to act as a trophic linkage between phytoplankton and fish. Ultimately, the losses or gains in species richness and species interactions were strongly driven by environmental gradients. This study provides for the first time a combined analysis of the effects of environmental heterogeneity on ecological communities belonging to three trophic levels sampled near simultaneously across an 800 km broad lacustrine landscape. The new framework developed in this study has a great potential to better understand the complex response of aquatic ecosystems in a world increasingly affected by multiple, cumulative stressors.  相似文献
