OCP3 is an important modulator of NPR1-mediated jasmonic acid-dependent induced defenses in <Emphasis Type="Italic">Arabidopsis</Emphasis>

Background  

Upon appropriate stimulation, plants increase their level of resistance against future pathogen attack. This phenomenon, known as induced resistance, presents an adaptive advantage due to its reduced fitness costs and its systemic and broad-spectrum nature. In Arabidopsis, different types of induced resistance have been defined based on the signaling pathways involved, particularly those dependent on salicylic acid (SA) and/or jasmonic acid (JA).     

Cerebrospinal fluid ions in metabolic acidosis in dogs: effects of acetazolamide

We hypothesized that, during isosmotic isonatremic HCl acidosis with maintained isocapnia in cisternal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), acetazolamide, by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase (CA) in the central nervous system (CNS), should produce an isonatric hyperchloric metabolic acidosis in CSF. Blood and CSF ions and acid-base variables were measured in two groups of anesthetized and paralyzed dogs with bilateral ligation of renal pedicles during 5 h of HCl acidosis (plasma [HCO3-] = 11 meq/l). Mechanical ventilation was regulated such that arterial PCO2 dropped and CSF Pco2 remained relatively constant. In group I (control group, n = 6), CSF [Na+] remained unchanged, [HCO3-] and strong ions difference (SID) fell, respectively, 6.1 and 5 meq/l, and [Cl-] rose 3.5 meq/l after 5 h of acidosis. In acetazolamide-treated animals, (group II, n = 7), CSF [Na+] remained unchanged, [HCO3-], and SID fell 11 and 7.1 meq/l, respectively, and [Cl-] rose 7.1 meq/l. We conclude that during HCl acidosis inhibition of CNS CA by acetazolamide induces an isonatric hyperchloric metabolic acidosis in CSF, which is more severe than that observed in controls.     

Molecular evolution of the period gene in Drosophila athabasca

We measured nucleotide variability within and between the three semispecies of the Drosophila athabasca complex, at the period (per) gene by using a polymerase chain reaction-based four-cutter restriction- enzyme analysis. The levels of polymorphism varied considerably between the three semispecies. Our results for per, combined with previous data for X-linked allozymes, suggest that the X chromosome in the western- northern semispecies is less variable than expected under an equilibrium-neutral model. Both the pattern of divergence between the semispecies and a cladistic clustering of per haplotypes support the previously hypothesized grouping of eastern A and eastern B as the two most recently diverged semispecies. A 21-bp in-frame segment in the region of per which shares sequence similarity with the neuronal development gene single minded is deleted in all eastern A and eastern B flies examined but is present in all of the western-northern flies and all other published per sequences. Despite these hints that there may be significant differences at the per gene between the semispecies, especially the western-northern group versus the two eastern groups, there is no compelling evidence that per is involved in the mating song differences between the semispecies.      

Inhibition of cellular transition from G1-resting to G1-prereplicative phase by aminonucleoside of puromycin.

Human embryonic lung fibroblasts (IMR-90 and WI-38) were arrested in the G1 phase of the cell cycle by serum deprivation and high population density. Within 1 hr after the addition of medium containing fresh serum, these cells showed an increase in rRNA synthesis. The inclusion of 100 micrograms per ml aminonucleoside of puromycin (AMS) in the fresh medium eliminated the serum stimulation of rRNA synthesis and prevented the cells from making the G1-resting phase to G1-prereplicative phase transition. AMS also prevented the synthesis of HnRNA normally found within 10 hr after serum stimulation. Serum-stimulated RNA synthesis in starved, SV-40 transformed fibroblasts (WI-38-VA-13 cells) was inhibited, but not completely prevented, by AMS indicating that transformed cells may produce specific RNA's that are not AMS-sensitive and that may be responsible for the failure of transformed cells to be arrested in G1.     

Immunofluorometric determination of antigenic differences between whole-cell antigens ofLegionella pneumophila

The immunofluorometric procedure has been utilized to assess the relative antigenicity of whole-cell antigens ofLegionella pneumophila. Observed response curves and interpretations of them are presented with experimental results that directly support the interpretation of such reaction curves. Application of the method for evaluating the relative antigenicity of strains maintained in tissue versus laboratory strains, routinely transferred on Feeley-Gorman or charcoal yeast extract agar, showed that laboratory strains have quantitatively gained, rather than lost, surface antigens directly involved in the human immune response to infection.
