Foreign-body reaction to silicone gel in axillary lymph nodes after an augmentation mammaplasty.

A radical mastectomy was performed for a breast adenocarcinoma occurring 10 years after a subpectoral augmentation mammaplasty with silicone gel-filled prostheses. A foreign-body reaction to silicone was seen in two of the axillary lymph nodes resected.     

Cystic fibrosis in the population of Reunion Island

The frequencies of the delta F 508 mutation and haplotypes linked to the cystic fibrosis (CF) gene and detected with DNA probes XV-2C and KM-19 have been studied in the population of Reunion Island, a French province located in the Indian Ocean. The deletion was present in 41.3% of CF chromosomes, whereas this proportion is about 70% in the French population. The delta F 508 mutation was associated with the haplotype B defined by the DNA markers XV-2C (allele 1) and KM-19 (allele 2) in 76.4% of CF chromosomes, while this proportion is over 90% in the French population. Founder effect, genetic drift and admixture can explain these differences.     

Dopamine produces muscle contractions and modulates motoneuron-induced contractions inAplysia gill

1. Dopamine has been reported to exist in unusually large quantities in Aplysia gill. The physiological role of this neurotransmitter in this organ was examined. 2. The addition of dopamine to a gill perfusate results in the contractions of the lateral and medial external pinnule muscles, the circular and longitudinal muscles of the afferent vessel, and the circular muscles of the efferent vessel. 3. Dopamine-induced contractions persist after chemical synaptic transmission is eliminated in the gill. This suggests that excitatory dopamine receptors are present on gill smooth muscle fibers themselves. 4. Dopamine also potentiates the gill response to action potentials in single identified gill motoneurons. Evidence presented suggests that muscle contractions and modulation of motoneuron contractions are independent phenomena. 5. While modulation may in part be mediated by increases in excitatory junction potential (EJP) amplitude, in many cases large increases in muscle contractions occur while the enhancement of EJPs is disproportionately small. 6. Dopamine's ability to produce muscle contractions suggests that there may be dopaminergic motoneuron innervation of the gill. We suggest that dopamine's modulatory actions may be mediated via modification of excitation-contraction coupling in smooth muscle fibers.     

Demonstration of the presence of an ultrafiltrable substance in human serum activating somatomedin A

Human serum contains an ultrafiltrable factor which stimulates the somatomedin activity measured by 35SO4 incorporation into pelvic cartilage of chick embryo, this ultrafiltrable factor activates native serum somatomedin or partially purified somatomedin. The molecular weight determined by fractionated ultrafiltration or chromatography on Biogel P2 is about 350-500 daltons.     

Recognition of human minor alloantigen(s) by cytotoxic lymphocytes in vitro

Lymphocytes from an extensively transfused patient with aplastic anemia were induced to cytotoxicity against target cells from several HLA-matched siblings by in vitro stimulation with allogeneic cells. Effective stimulating cells shared HLA-B7 with the patient, but not all B7 individuals were effective. An additional factor, which was found to segregate in both the patient's and an unrelated sibship, was also necessary. Segregation of this minor alloantigen, W, was also revealed among the patient's HLA-matched sibs by differential susceptibility to lysis by effectors from the patient. The ratio of six positive to four negative siblings suggests that the antigen difference might be coded by a single locus. Lymphocytes from a normal sib, who like the patient is lacking the minor antigen, could not be induced to cytotoxicity against positive targets. Thus in vivo sensitization of the donor of the responding cells appears to be necessary for the demonstration of the cytotoxic response to the minor antigen in vitro.
