A good overlap between offspring energetic requirements and availability of resources is required for successful reproduction. Accordingly, individuals from numerous species fine-tune their timing of breeding by integrating cues that predict environmental conditions during the offspring period. Besides acquiring information from their direct interaction with the environment (personal information), individuals can integrate information by observing the behaviours or performance of others (social information). The use of social information is often beneficial because the accumulated knowledge of conspecifics may represent a source of information more reliable than the intrinsically more limited personal information. However, although social information constitutes the major source of information in a wide range of contexts, studies investigating its use in the context of timing of breeding are scarce. We investigated whether black-legged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) used social information to adjust the timing of egg-laying. We manipulated social information using a food-supplementation experiment, known to advance kittiwakes' reproductive phenology. We expected food-supplemented and unsupplemented pairs to delay and advance, respectively, their timing of laying when surrounded by a majority of neighbours from the opposite food-treatment. However, both unsupplemented and food-supplemented kittiwakes delayed egg-laying when surrounded by a higher proportion of neighbours from the opposite food-treatment. This result shows that kittiwakes use social information to time egg-laying, but that it is not used to match the seasonal peak of food availability. We suggest that when social and personal cues give contradictory environmental information, individuals may benefit from delaying laying to gather more information to make better decisions about investment into eggs. Further, we explored a potential proximate mechanism for the pattern we report. We show that baseline corticosterone, known to mediate reproductive decisions, was lower in unsupplemented females facing a higher proportion of food-supplemented neighbours. Altogether, our results suggest that to fine-tune their timing of laying, kittiwakes use complex decision-making processes in which social and personal information interplay.

Abstract

Protein structures are highly dynamic macromolecules. This dynamics is often analysed through experimental and/or computational methods only for an isolated or a limited number of proteins. Here, we explore large-scale protein dynamics simulation to observe dynamics of local protein conformations using different perspectives. We analysed molecular dynamics to investigate protein flexibility locally, using classical approaches such as RMSf, solvent accessibility, but also innovative approaches such as local entropy. First, we focussed on classical secondary structures and analysed specifically how β-strand, β–turns, and bends evolve during molecular simulations. We underlined interesting specific bias between β–turns and bends, which are considered as the same category, while their dynamics show differences. Second, we used a structural alphabet that is able to approximate every part of the protein structures conformations, namely protein blocks (PBs) to analyse (i) how each initial local protein conformations evolve during dynamics and (ii) if some exchange can exist among these PBs. We have previously shown that mitochondrial protein synthesis regulates myoblast differentiation, partly through the control of c-Myc expression, a cellular oncogene regulating myogenin expression and myoblast withdrawal from the cell cycle. In this study we provide evidence of the involvement of Calcineurin in this regulation. In C2C12 myoblasts, inhibition of mitochondrial protein synthesis by chloramphenicol decreases Calcineurin expression. Conversely, stimulation of this process by overexpressing the T3 mitochondrial receptor (p43) increases Calcineurin expression. Moreover, expression of a constitutively active Calcineurin (ΔCN) stimulates myoblast differentiation, whereas a Calcineurin antisense has the opposite effect. Lastly, ΔCN expression or stimulation of mitochondrial protein synthesis specifically increases slow myosin heavy chain expression. In conclusion, these data clearly suggest that, partly via Calcineurin expression, mitochondrial protein synthesis is involved in muscle development through the control of myoblast differentiation and probably the acquisition of the contractile and metabolic phenotype of muscle fibres.  相似文献

The status of genes conferring resistance to organophosphate and carbamate insecticides has been examined in Culex pipiens pipiens mosquitoes sampled in Algeria. Presence of overproduced esterases was sporadic, but acetylcholinesterase-1 resistant alleles were observed in almost all samples. We focused our study on the AChE1 G119S substitution characterized in almost all samples, mostly at the heterozygous state. A genetic test revealed the presence of ace-1 duplication associating a susceptible and a resistant ace-1 copy. Molecular characterization showed a high occurrence of ace-1 duplication with six distinct duplicated alleles out of four samples. The inferred frequency of duplicated allele suggests that it is replacing the single resistant G119S allele. Finally, we discuss the mechanism at the origin of these duplicated haplotypes and their consequences on the management of insecticide resistance.  相似文献

Gene duplications have long been advocated to contribute to the evolution of new functions. The role of selection in their early spread is more controversial. Unless duplications are favored for a direct benefit of increased expression, they are likely detrimental. In this article, we investigated the case of duplications favored because they combine already functionally divergent alleles. Their gene‐dosage/fitness relations are poorly known because selection may operate on both overall expression and duplicates relative dosage. Using the well‐documented case of Culex pipiens resistance to insecticides, we compared strains with various ace‐1 allele combinations, including two duplicated alleles carrying both susceptible and resistant copies. The overall protein activity was nearly additive, but, surprisingly, fitness correlated better with the relative proportion of susceptible and resistant copies rather than any absolute measure of activity. Gene dosage is thus crucial, duplications stabilizing a “heterozygote” phenotype. It corroborates the view that these were favored because they fix a permanent heterosis, thereby solving the irreducible trade‐off between resistance and synaptic transmission. Moreover, we showed that the contrasted successes of the two duplicated alleles in natural populations depend on genetic changes unrelated to ace‐1, confirming the probable implication of recessive sublethal mutations linked to structural rearrangements in some duplications.  相似文献

The preparation of a series of new heteroleptic ruthenium complexes containing a 4'-phosphonic acid terpyridine and a terpyridine substituted in 4' position by a bithiophene or tert-thiophene are described. The UV-Vis absorption and emission spectra along the redox potentials of these complexes are reported. These new complexes were also tested as sensitizers in dry dye-sensitised solar cell using regioregular polyoctylthiophene as a solid hole conductor. It has been shown that the complexes substituted with thiophene chain exhibit poor photovoltaic efficiency most probably due to low electron injection efficiency. This latter property can be rationalised by the fact that the LUMO orbitals in these complexes are localised in the terpyridine substituted by the thiophene chain and not in the terpyridine phosphonic which is bonded to the TiO2 photoanode.  相似文献

The urotensin II (UII) gene is primarily expressed in the central nervous system, but the functions of UII in the brain remain elusive. Here, we show that cultured rat astrocytes constitutively express the UII receptor (UT). Saturation and competition experiments performed with iodinated rat UII ([(125)I]rUII) revealed the presence of high- and low-affinity binding sites on astrocytes. Human UII (hUII) and the two highly active agonists hUII(4-11) and [3-iodo-Tyr9]hUII(4-11) were also very potent in displacing [(125)I]rUII from its binding sites, whereas the non-cyclic analogue [Ser5,10]hUII(4-11) and somatostatin-14 could only displace [(125)I]rUII binding at micromolar concentrations. Reciprocally, rUII failed to compete with [(125)I-Tyr0,D-Trp8]somatostatin-14 binding on astrocytes. Exposure of cultured astrocytes to rUII stimulated [(3)H]inositol incorporation and increased intracellular Ca(2+) concentration in a dose-dependent manner. The stimulatory effect of rUII on polyphosphoinositide turnover was abolished by the phospholipase C inhibitor U73122, but only reduced by 56% by pertussis toxin. The GTP analogue Gpp(NH)p caused its own biphasic displacement of [(125)I]rUII binding and provoked an affinity shift of the competition curve of rUII. Pertussis toxin shifted the competition curve towards a single lower affinity state. Taken together, these data demonstrate that rat astrocytes express high- and low-affinity UII binding sites coupled to G proteins, the high-affinity receptor exhibiting the same pharmacological and functional characteristics as UT.  相似文献

We report on the molecular wiring efficiency of a ruthenium polypyridine complex acting as a sensitizer connected to a poly(3-hexyl)thiophene chain acting as hole transporting material. We have developed an efficient synthetic strategy to covalently connect via an ethanyl spacer a regioregular poly(3-hexyl)thiophene chain to a ruthenium complex. Solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells were prepared either with the latter system or with a similar ruthenium sensitizer but lacking the polymer chain (reference system). The comparison of the photocurrent-photovoltage characteristics of the cells recorded under AM1.5 indicates a two fold improvement of the overall photoconversion efficiencies when the sensitizer is grafted to the hole transporting material (eta = 0.27%) relative to the reference system (eta = 0.13%). The higher photovoltaic performance can be attributed to the better diffusion-like propagation of the holes from the sensitizer to the counter electrode through the covalently linked polythiophene chain.  相似文献

This paper presents observations of Houbara Bustard Chlamydotis undulata undulata home-range, in the semi-desert steppe of eastern Morocco. Home-ranges were calculated from radiotagged birds using the fixed kernel method (LSCV). The mean annual home-range of males (17 km2) was smaller than that of females (146 km2; P  < 0.001). The majority of male home-ranges had a unimodal distribution (86%), whereas 67% of female home-ranges were multimodal. Consequently, the amplitude of female movements was larger (mean: 44 km/13 km; P  < 0.002). In spring, male home-ranges decreased in size around display sites (8 km2) and many of them overlapped considerably. Display sites show an aggregative distribution ( P <  0.001) and a single female reproductive range may contain the display sites of several males. The data fulfil the definition of an exploded lek social structure. In our study, C. u. undulata appears to be sedentary with relatively limited home-ranges. Successive years of fidelity to home-ranges indicate that adults are not nomadic.  相似文献
