Alkaloids of melodinus guillauminii

Fourteen alkaloids were isolated from the stem bark and aerial parts of Melodinus guillauminii. They were 11-hydroxytabersonine, venalstonine, venalstonidine, 14,15-seco-3-oxokopsinal, 3-oxovenalstonine, 11-methoxy-Δ¹⁴– vincamenine, 3-oxo-hydroxykopsinine, 11-methoxy-Δ¹⁴-vincanol, kopsinine, 15-α-hydroxykopsinine, 11-methoxy- tabersonine, pleiocarpamine, 19-β-hydroxyvenalstonine and guillauminiine.     

Osteodentine and vascular osteodentine of Anarhichas lupus (L.)

Summary TEM, SEM and X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrate the heterogeneity of the dentinal tissue of Anarhichas lupus, a vascular osteodentine. The disordered aspect of collagen fibres, incompletely mineralized (the periodical striation being still visible), explains the scattered distribution of crystallites since they are responsible for their arrangement. The low degree of mineralization revealed by the visible collagen striation is confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis (the crystallinity of vascular osteodentine being much lower than that of the peripheral dental tissue) as well as by high resolution TEM, since no lattice planes could be observed. Osteodentine, supporting bone and proper bone have in common a mineral phase, more or less organized, different from the apatite system.The authors thank Mireille Cottrel-Gengoux for her technical assistance     

Congenital defects of the upper lateral incisors (ULI): Condition and measurements of the other teeth,measurements of the superior arch,head and face

We surveyed a French male population for the incidence of missing or reduced upper lateral incisors (ULI). In 5,738 subjects, we observed an incidence of 1.59% with one or two reduced ULI (the other normal) and 1.90% with one or two missing ULI (the other normal or reduced), altogether, 3.49% affected subjects. Furthermore, 250 random controls were observed. Agenesis of other teeth is more frequent in propositi. Missing third molars were 12.4% in controls, 24.0% in propositi with reduced ULI and 39.6% in propositi with two missing ULI. Furthermore, agenesis of incisors, canines and premolars ranges from 0.4% in controls to 1.3% in propositi having reduced ULI and 5.0% in propositi with two missing ULI. So, propositi with reduced ULI are intermediate between the controls and the propositi with missing ULI with respect to the frequency of agenesis of other teeth. On the other hand, a different ranking is observed with respect to the teeth measurements: reduction of tooth size is more marked in propositi with reduced ULI than in propositi with missing ULI. The reduction mainly affects canines, incisors and to a lesser degree, premolars. Arch length and interpremolar diameters are smaller in propositi with missing ULI, compared with controls.     

Cytochrome c-551.5 (c7) from Desulfuromonas acetoxidans.

Cytochrome c-551.5 of the anaerobic sulfur-reducing bacterium Desulfuromonas acetoxidans has been purified to homogeneity and characterized. It elicits absorption bands at 551.5, 522.5 and 418 nm in the reduced form; the absorptivity ratio Aalpha(red)/A280nm(ox) equals 3.8 for the pure preparation. The molecular weight was estimated to be 9800 by gel filtration. Determination of the amion acid composition and analysis of the N-terminal amino acid sequence showed the cytochrome to be identical with the threehaem cytochrome c-551.5 (c7) isolated from the syntrophic mixed culture Chloropseudomonas ethylica strain 2K. The occurrence of multihaem cytochromes c in bacteria is discussed.     

Active K+ transport in Mycoplasma mycoides var. Capri. Net and unidirectional K+ movements

Analysis of the cation composition of growing Mycoplasma mycoides var. Capri indicates that these organisms have a high intracellular K⁺ concentration ($\text{K}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>i</mtext>}}\text{: 200–300}\text{mM}$) which greatly exceeds that of the growth medium, and a low Na⁺ concentration ($\text{Na}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>i</mtext>}}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{: 20}\text{mM}$). Unlike $\text{Na}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>i</mtext>}}{}^{\mathrm{+}}\text{, K}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>i</mtext>}}{}^{\mathrm{+}}$ varies with cell aging.The K⁺ transport properties studied in washed organisms resuspended in buffered saline solution show that cells maintain a steady and large K⁺ concentration gradient across their membrane at the expense of metabolic energy mainly derived from glycolysis. In starved cells, $\text{K}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>i</mtext>}}{}^{\mathrm{+}}$ decreases and is partially compensated by a gain in Na⁺. This substitution completely reverses when metabolic substrate is added (K⁺ reaccumulation process). Kinetic analysis of K⁺ movement in cells with steady K⁺ level shows that most of K⁺ influx is mediated by an autologous K⁺-K⁺ exchange mechanism. On the other hand, during K⁺ reaccumulation by K⁺-depleted cells, a different mechanism (a K⁺ uptake mechanism) with higher transport capacity and affinity drives the net K⁺ influx. Both mechanisms are energy-dependent.Ouabain and anoxia have no effect on K⁺ transport mechanisms; in contrast, both processes are completely blocked by dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, an inhibitor of the Mg²⁺-dependent ATPase activity.     

Histone - induced changes in the cellular growth of synchronized chlamydomonas reinhardii are due to histone H1

The cellular growth ofChlamydomonas reinhardii is modified by the addition of a total exogenous histone fraction. These modifications may be related to chloroplast DNA replication; they are different according to the different classes of histones. The H₁ subfraction seems to be responsible for the effect of the total histone fraction.
