The lysolipid sphingosine modulates pyrophosphatase activity in tonoplast vesicles and isolated vacuoles from a heterotrophic cell suspension culture of Chenopodium rubrum

The proton pumping activity of the tonoplast (vacuolar membrane) H⁺-ATPase and H⁺-pyrophosphatase (H⁺-PPase) has been studied on a tonoplast-enriched microsomal fraction and on intact vacuoles isolated from a heterotrophic cell suspension culture of Chenopodium rubrum L. in the presence of the lysosphingolipids D-sphingosine, psychosine (galactosylsphingosine) and lysosulfatide (sulfogalactosyl-sphingosine). Sphingosine strongly stimulates (K_a= 0.16 μ M ) the PPase activity, assayed both as ΔpH formation across the tonoplast vesicle membrane, and as reversible clamp current measured by the whole-vacuolar mode of the patch-clamp technique. Psychosine showed a minor, and lysosulfatide no stimulatory effect. No effect upon the ATPase activity has been observed. No sphingosine-induced change could be observed in the affinity of the PPase for its substrate (apparent K_m= 10 μ M MgPPi). We tentatively conclude that sphingosine, which is known as a potent inhibitor of the protein kinase C in animal cells, may be a regulator of the plant vacuolar PPase.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia must be seriously considered in the differential diagnosis of acute respiratory distress in neonates as well as in older infants who present with chronic progressive gastrointestinal and respiratory symptoms. An x-ray film of the chest is mandatory and is almost always diagnostic. Immediate nasogastric decompression of the stomach, with simultaneous fluid and electrolyte replacement and prompt surgical intervention offers the patient the best chance of survival.     

Multi-layered Graphene Silica-Based Tunable Absorber for Infrared Wavelength Based on Circuit Theory Approach

Graphene can be utilized as a tunable material for a wide range of infrared wavelength regions due to its tunable conductivity property. In this paper, we use Y-shaped silver material resonator placed over the top of multiple graphene silica-layered structures to realize the perfect absorption over the infrared wavelength region. We propose four different designs by placing the graphene sheet over silica. The absorption and reflectance performance of the structures have been explored for 1500- to 1600-nm wavelength range. The proposed design also explores the absorption tunability of the structure for the different values of graphene chemical potential. We have reported the negative impedance for the perfect absorption for proposed metamaterial absorber structures. All the metamaterial absorbers have reported 99% of its absorption peaks in the infrared wavelength region. These designs can be used as a tunable absorber for narrowband and wideband applications. The proposed designs will become the basic building block of large photonics design which will be applicable for polariser, sensor, and solar applications.

How to Report Record Open‐Circuit Voltages in Lead‐Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Open‐circuit voltages of lead‐halide perovskite solar cells are improving rapidly and are approaching the thermodynamic limit. Since many different perovskite compositions with different bandgap energies are actively being investigated, it is not straightforward to compare the open‐circuit voltages between these devices as long as a consistent method of referencing is missing. For the purpose of comparing open‐circuit voltages and identifying outstanding values, it is imperative to use a unique, generally accepted way of calculating the thermodynamic limit, which is currently not the case. Here a meta‐analysis of methods to determine the bandgap and a radiative limit for open‐circuit voltage is presented. The differences between the methods are analyzed and an easily applicable approach based on the solar cell quantum efficiency as a general reference is proposed.     

French recommendations for the management of systemic necrotizing vasculitides (polyarteritis nodosa and ANCA-associated vasculitides)

Systemic necrotizing vasculitis comprises a group of diseases resembling polyarteritis nodosa and anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (ANCA): granulomatosis with polyangiitis, eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and microscopic polyangiitis. The definitive diagnosis is made in cooperation with a reference center for autoimmune diseases and rare systemic diseases or a competency center. The management goals are: to obtain remission and, in the long term, healing; to reduce the risk of relapses; to limit and reduce the sequelae linked to the disease; to limit the side effects and the sequelae linked to the treatments; to improve or at least maintain the best possible quality of life; and to maintain socio-professional integration and/or allow a rapid return to school and/or professional activity. Information and therapeutic education of the patients and those around them are an integral part of the care. All health professionals and patients should be informed of the existence of patient associations. The treatment of vasculitis is based on variable combinations of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants, chosen and adapted according to the disease concerned, the severity and/or extent of the disease, and the underlying factors (age, kidney function, etc.). Follow-up clinical and paraclinical examinations must be carried out regularly to clarify the progression of the disease, detect and manage treatment failures and possible relapses early on, and limit sequelae and complications (early then late) related to the disease or treatment. A distinction is made between the induction therapy, lasting approximately 3–6 months and aimed at putting the disease into remission, and the maintenance treatment, lasting 12–48 months, or even longer. The role of the increase or testing positive again for ANCA as a predictor of a relapse, which has long been controversial, now seems to have greater consensus: Anti-myeloperoxidase ANCAs are less often associated with a relapse of vasculitis than anti-PR3 ANCA.
