Pharmacomodulation of a sulfamide 5-HT6 receptor ligand

A series of N-omega-aminoalkyl- or N-omega-amidinoalkyl-2,4,6-triisopropyl benzenesulfonamides has been synthesized and their respective affinity indices on 5-HT6 receptor determined. This evaluation clearly showed that the compounds possessing an arylpiperazine moiety or an amidine function exhibited good affinity for the model.     

Centrosomes: hooked on the nucleus

A recent study has shown that the Hook protein ZYG-12 of Caenorhabditis elegans is essential for attachment of the centrosome to the nucleus. The results suggest a novel mechanism for the tight coupling between these two organelles, and shed new light on its biological significance.     

Elevated plasma phospholipase A2 and platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase activity in colorectal cancer

This clinical study reports that blood levels of the pro-inflammatory mediator platelet-activating factor (PAF) did not change in colorectal cancer patients. In contrast, plasma levels of two enzymatic activities, one implicated in PAF production (i.e. phospholipase A2) and one in PAF degradation (i.e. PAF acetylhydrolase activity) were significantly elevated.     

Progesterone in milk: a simple experiment illustrating the estrous cycle and enzyme immunoassay

Experiments designed for students in reproductive physiology are rare. Here, we describe a simple experiment concerning a physiological aspect of the reproductive system. Milk samples are obtained from cows in estrus, in midcycle, 21 days after insemination, and in gestation. With these samples, the gestation or estrous stage is determined according to the progesterone level in milk that is measured using enzyme immunoassay. This experiment can therefore be used to demonstrate assay techniques and to illustrate the variations in progesterone concentrations during an estrous cycle and gestation. This exercise should be given after the reproduction section of the animal physiology course so that students can apply their knowledge concerning hormonal profiles during an estrous cycle.     

Partial molecular characterization of two simian immunodeficiency viruses (SIV) from African colobids: SIVwrc from Western red colobus (Piliocolobus badius) and SIVolc from olive colobus (Procolobus verus)

In order to study primate lentivirus evolution in the Colobinae subfamily, in which only one simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) has been described to date, we screened additional species from the three different genera of African colobus monkeys for SIV infection. Blood was obtained from 13 West African colobids, and HIV cross-reactive antibodies were observed in 5 of 10 Piliocolobus badius, 1 of 2 Procolobus verus, and 0 of 1 Colobus polykomos specimens. Phylogenetic analyses of partial pol sequences revealed that the new SIVs were more closely related to each other than to the other SIVs and especially did not cluster with the previously described SIVcol from Colobus guereza. This study presents evidence that the three genera of African colobus monkeys are naturally infected with an SIV and indicates also that there was no coevolution between virus and hosts at the level of the Colobinae subfamily.
