The ability to assess green biomass is of particular interest in a number of wheat breeding environments. However, the measurement of this and similar traits is either tedious and time-consuming or requires the use of expensive, sophisticated equipment, such as field-based spectroradiometers to measure vegetation indices (VIs). Here, conventional digital cameras are proposed as affordable and easy-to-use tools for gathering field data in wheat breeding programmes. Using appropriate software, a large set of images can be automatically processed to calculate a number of VIs, based on the performance of simple colour operations on each picture. The purpose of this study was to identify a set of picture-derived vegetation indices (picVIs) and to evaluate their performance in durum wheat trials growing under rainfed and supplementary irrigation conditions. Here, zenithal pictures of each plot were obtained roughly 2 weeks after anthesis, and the picVIs that were calculated were compared with the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), an index derived from spectroradiometrical measurements, and with the grain yield (GY) from the same plots. The picVIs that performed best were the Hue, CIE-Lab a* and CIE-Luv u* components of the average colour of each picture, the relative green area (GA) and the 'greener area', similar to GA but excluding the more yellowish-green pixels. Our results showed a high correlation between all these picVIs and the NDVI. Moreover, in rainfed conditions, each picVI provided an estimation of GY similar to or slightly better than that provided by the NDVI. However, in irrigated conditions during anthesis, neither these picVIs nor the NDVI provided a good estimation of GY, apparently because of the saturation of the VI response in conditions of complete soil cover and high plant density.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to investigate possible interactions of tetrodotoxin (TTX) with lipid molecules isolated from nerve fiber plasma membranes of the squid Dosidicus gigas. TTX has a highly selective ability to block the channel normally used by Na+ to cross the axolemma during nervous impulse conduction. In order to investigate the interaction each lipid sample was spread on 5 x 10-7 M TTX and TTX-free 0.15 M NaCl solutions adjusted to pH 7.4 with 7 x 10-3 M phosphate buffer. The surface pressure-area diagrams of the lipid monolayers revealed that TTX interacts only with cholesterol. The expansion of the cholesterol monolayers at 5 x 10-7 M TTX was 2 A2/molecule at zero pressure for the experiments at 20°C and 2.5 A2/molecule for those at 25°C. Similar results were obtained in KCl subphases. The apparent dissociation constant of the cholesterol-TTX complex calculated from dose-response experiments is 2.6 x 10-7 M. Experiments at pH 10.1 revealed that the zwitter ionic form of TTX is less active. Experiments with cholesterol derivatives (cholesteryl acetate, cholesterol methyl ether, cholestanol, and cholestanyl acetate) indicate that for the interaction with TTX a partial negatively charged group at C-3 and a double bond between C-5 and C-6 on the steroid nucleus are required. Tetrodonic acid, a biologically inactive derivative of TTX, does not interact with cholesterol. The results lead us to propose that cholesterol is part of the Na+ channel.  相似文献

The penetration of 14C-labeled erythritol, mannitol, and sucrose through the axolemma was determined in medium sized paired axons, one at rest and the other stimulated 25 times per sec. The resting permeabilities, in 10-7 cm/sec, are erythritol, 2.9 ± 0.3 (mean ± SEM); mannitol, 2.3 ± 0.4; and sucrose 0.9 ± 0.1. In the stimulated axons they are: erythritol, 5.2 ± 0.3; mannitol, 4.0 ± 0.5; and sucrose, 1.8 ± 0.3. Thus, the calculated permeabilities during activity (1 msec per impulse), in the same units, are: 100, 75, and 38, respectively. These changes in permeability are reversible. The effects of external potassium and sodium concentrations on erythritol penetration were also studied. At rest, erythritol penetration is independent of potassium and sodium concentrations. In the stimulated axons, erythritol penetration decreases when the extracellular sodium is diminished. Sodium influx (not the efflux) decreases during rest and activity when the extracellular sodium is diminished. The diminution during activity of erythritol and sodium entries in low sodium solutions may be related to a decrease of a drag effect of sodium ions on the nonelectrolyte molecules or to independent effects of the sodium concentration on sodium influx and the nonelectrolyte pathways. The axolemma discriminates among erythritol, mannitol, sucrose, and the different ionic species during rest and activity.  相似文献

The production of benzophenanthridine alkaloids (sanguinarine, chelerythrine and macarpine) in cells of Eschscholtzia californica is enhanced by sodium alginate and by entrapment in Ca2+-alginate. Tyrosine decarboxylase, a key enzyme of alkaloid biosynthesis, is induced by the treatments. Alginate- entrapped cells are elicited over an extended period of time which leads to increased alkaloid biosynthesis (up to 800-fold enhancement). A major portion of alkaloids produced are released into the growth medium.  相似文献

Bonded polysaccharide‐derived chiral stationary phases were found to be useful for the preparation of the four stereoisomers of the cyclopropane analogue of phenylalanine (c3Phe) as well as for the direct determination of the enantiomeric purity of c3Phe derivatives by HPLC. Three chiral stationary phases, consisting of cellulose and amylose derivatives chemically bonded on allylsilica gel, were tested. The mixed 10‐undecenoate/3,5‐dimethylphenylcarbamate of cellulose, 10‐undecenoate/3,5‐dimethylphenylcarbamate of amylose and 10‐undecenoate/p‐methylbenzoate of cellulose were the starting polysaccharide derivatives for CSP‐1, CSP‐2, and CSP‐3, respectively. Using mixtures of n‐hexane/chloroform/2‐propanol as mobile phase on a semi‐preparative column (150 mm × 20 mm ID) containing CSP‐2, we separated about 1.7 g of racemic cis‐methyl 1‐tert‐butoxycarbonylamino‐2‐phenylcyclopropanecarboxylate (cis‐ 6 ) and 1.2 g of racemic trans‐methyl‐1‐tert‐butoxycarbonylamino‐2‐phenylcycloprop‐anecarboxylate (trans‐ 6 ) by successive injections. Evenness is an important property of communities. Species richness alone does not capture the fact that one or a few species may dominate total abundance and biomass of a community. This in turn has important consequences for ecosystem functioning and species interactions. Evenness has been observed to vary systematically along environmental and productivity gradients. However, a truly general theory about which factors control evenness in a community has yet to emerge. Prior research on evenness has suggested that high richness, biomass and abundance should lead to lower community evenness in our study system of bats in Panama. However, only few empirical studies examine the simultaneous effects of species richness, biomass or abundance on evenness. For the first time, we applied path analysis in the study of evenness to tease apart the relative importance and direction (positive or negative) of causality among these three factors. As predicted, we found that evenness decreases with increasing species richness, abundance and biomass. The negative effect of abundance was mediated by the positive joint effect of biomass and richness. The selected models varied in the strength of the correlation between the three variables with evenness but their direction was consistent. Overall, we argue that rarity, high mobility and differences in resource availability at sites with lower environmental stress can explain the negative effects of richness on evenness.  相似文献

Background  

The pan-genome of a bacterial species consists of a core and an accessory gene pool. The accessory genome is thought to be an important source of genetic variability in bacterial populations and is gained through lateral gene transfer, allowing subpopulations of bacteria to better adapt to specific niches. Low-cost and high-throughput sequencing platforms have created an exponential increase in genome sequence data and an opportunity to study the pan-genomes of many bacterial species. The study of U.S. racial and ethnic relations is often reduced to the study of racial or ethnic relations. This article reveals the limitations of a focus on ethnicity or race, in isolation, and instead urges a new framework that brings them together. We consider three cases that have been conceptualized by the ethnicity paradigm as assimilation projects and by the race paradigm as structural racism projects, respectively: (1) African-American entrepreneurs; (2) the Mexican middle class; and (3) black immigrant deportees. We reveal the shortcomings of the ethnicity paradigm to consider race as a structural force or to acknowledge that structural racism conditions incorporation in marked ways; and the limitations of the race paradigm to take seriously group members’ agency in fostering social capital that can mediate racial inequality. Instead, we offer a unifying approach to reveals how ethnicity and race condition members’ life chances within the U.S. social structure.  相似文献

The Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway plays critical instructional roles during embryonic development. Misregulation of Hh/Gli signaling is a major causative factor in human congenital disorders and in a variety of cancers. The zebrafish is a powerful genetic model for the study of Hh signaling during embryogenesis, as a large number of mutants that affect different components of the Hh/Gli signaling system have been identified. By performing global profiling of gene expression in different Hh/Gli gain- and loss-of-function scenarios we identified known (e.g., ptc1 and nkx2.2a) and novel Hh-regulated genes that are differentially expressed in embryos with altered Hh/Gli signaling function. By uncovering changes in tissue-specific gene expression, we revealed new embryological processes that are influenced by Hh signaling. We thus provide a comprehensive survey of Hh/Gli-regulated genes during embryogenesis and we identify new Hh-regulated genes that may be targets of misregulation during tumorigenesis.  相似文献
