The durations of the cell cycle in physiologically different regions of the meristem of cultured roots of Convolvulus arvensis were determined by the metaphase-accumulation technique involving colchicine. The cell cycle in the root cap increases from 13 hr in the actively dividing initials of the first tier to 155 hr in the slowly dividing initials of tiers 2–4 to an indeterminate value for derivatives of the initials in the root cap columella. The cycle times for the cells of the central cylinder and cortex are 21 and 27 hr, respectively. The cells of the quiescent center have a cycle of an estimated 420 hr. The duration of the cell cycle in these different regions is discussed in relation to the increased duration of G1 in slowly or non-dividing cells. The possible regulation of cell division by the synthesis of a cell-division factor in the quiescent center is also discussed. 相似文献

During sanitation inspections of 46 crabmeat processing plants on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, 487 samples of whole crabs immediately after cooking, cooked crabs after cooling, backed or washed (or both) crab bodies and whole crab claws, as well as 1,506 retail units of finished product were collected and analyzed bacteriologically. The 1,506 retail units (1-lb [373.24-g] cans) included 518 cans of regular (special) meat, 487 cans of claw meat, and 501 cans of lump meat. Statistical analyses showed that crabmeat from plants in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas had higher counts in 19 of 24 cases for the four bacteriological indices than crabmeat from plants located along the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast of Florida. Aerobic plate counts of retail units collected from a previous day's production were significantly higher than those collected on the day of inspection. Regular crabmeat had consistently higher aerobic plate counts than claw or lump meat. When the product was handled expeditiously under good sanitary conditions, the bacteriological results were significantly better than the results from plants operating under poor sanitary conditions. Crabmeat produced in plants operating under good sanitary conditions had the following bacteriological content: (i) coliform organisms average most-probable-number values (geometric) of less than 20 per g; (ii) no Escherichia coli; (iii) coagulase-positive staphylococci average most-probable-number values (geometric) of less than 30 per g in 93% of the plants; (iv) aerobic plate count average values (geometric) of less than 100,000 per g in 93% of the plants, with the counts from 85% of these plants below 50,000 per g. 相似文献

1. A major component of the lipids in aqueous (pH7.5) homogenates of tuber tissue from Solanum tuberosum was isolated and characterized as 9-(nona-1',3'-dienoxy)non-8-enoic acid. 2. This novel unsaturated ether fatty acid derivative, which contains a butadienylvinyl ether function, has the structure: [Formula: see text] and is formed from linoleic acid by a sequence of enzymic reactions. 3. A precursor of the unsaturated ether derivative is 9-d-hydroperoxyoctadeca-10,12-dienoic acid, formed by the action of S. tuberosum lipoxygenase on linoleic acid. 4. An enzyme that converts the fatty acid hydroperoxide into the unsaturated ether derivative was isolated from S. tuberosum. The pH optimum of this enzyme is approx. 9, although the overall conversion of linoleic acid into the ether derivative is maximal at pH7.5. 5. An unusual feature of this pathway is the insertion of an oxygen atom into the alkyl chain of a fatty acid. 6. Summary Endogenous gibberellins were obtained in agar from the lower cut surface of upright sunflower shoot-tips. Exposure to unilateral light of the tips standing on agar, with the lower cut ends bisected by a vertical glass barrier at right angles to incident light, resulted in approximately 8 times the quantity of gibberellins moving into the agar below the shaded side than into the agar below the illuminated side. These results are similar to those reported earlier for gibberellins and geotropism in sunflower shoots, and suggest than the development of both light-and gravity-induced growth curvatures involve an asymmetry in gibberellin distribution across elongating internodes. 相似文献

Tubal cauterization and excision by laparoscopy appears to be a safe, efficient method.The technique used is carefully reviewed step by step. The absence of major complications in this series of 115 consecutive laparoscopies certainly supports the safety of the procedure. The low morbidity, short hospital stay and minimal time required appeal particularly to the working mother. The absence of an abdominal scar is also much appreciated.
