Habitat loss is one of the main threats to wildlife. Therefore, knowledge of habitat use and preference is essential for the design of conservation strategies and identification of priority sites for the protection of endangered species. The yellow‐tailed woolly monkey (Lagothrix flavicauda Humboldt, 1812), categorized as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, is endemic to montane forests in northern Peru where its habitat is greatly threatened. We assessed how habitat use and preference in L. flavicauda are linked to forest structure and composition. The study took place near La Esperanza, in the Amazonas region, Peru. Our objective was to identify characteristics of habitat most utilized by L. flavicauda to provide information that will be useful for the selection of priority sites for conservation measures. Using presence records collected from May 2013 to February 2014 for one group of L. flavicauda, we classified the study site into three different use zones: low‐use, medium‐use, and high‐use. We assessed forest structure and composition for all use zones using 0.1 ha Gentry vegetation transects. Results show high levels of variation in plant species composition across the three use zones. Plants used as food resources had considerably greater density, dominance, and ecological importance in high‐use zones. High‐use zones presented similar structure to medium‐ and low‐use zones; thus it remains difficult to assess the influence of forest structure on habitat preference. We recommend focusing conservation efforts on areas with a similar floristic composition to the high‐use zones recorded in this study and suggest utilizing key alimentation species for reforestation efforts.  相似文献

A sugar-binding component was shown to be present at the surface of endoerythrocytic Plasmodium berghei and P. chabaudi stages and merozoites by means of a panel of neoglycoproteins using fluorescence microscopy and flow cytofluorometry. The protein nature of this material was ascertained by the loss of sugar-binding capacity upon trypsin treatment. This lectin-like protein primarily bound neoglycoprotein-borne N-acetylglucosamine and secondarily bound neoglycoprotein-borne alpha-D-glucose, beta-D-galactose and alpha-L-fucose. These results suggest the presence of at least one type of lectin-like protein with an extended binding site accomodating several sugar units, and define its localization on the parasite surface.  相似文献

1. Manipulation of host behaviour by parasitoids has long captured the imagination of ecologists. Parasitoid wasps in the Polysphincta group of genera develop as external parasitoids of spiders. 2. In the present study, the previously undescribed interaction between a Zatypota sp. wasp (Ichneumonidae) and a social spider Anelosimus eximius (Theridiidae) is described. The larva of this Zatypota wasp is found to induce its host to disperse from their communal web and build an entirely enclosed web consisting of densely spun silk. 3. The wasp is observed to target primarily immature A. eximius individuals, with 37.5–44% of nests in a given area being parasitised. Of those nests, approximately 1.3–2.0% of individuals are hosts to the parasitoid larvae. Larger spider colonies had a significantly higher probability of harbouring parasitoids. 4. This interaction results in unusual behaviours for A. eximius induced by the parasitoid: (i) leaving the protection of the social nest and (ii) building a unique, altered web that it would not otherwise build. It is suggested that the wasp may be tapping into ancestral dispersal behaviours in its host and that a social species provides this wasp an evolutionary advantage by allowing a stable host source.  相似文献

The subcellular localization of the ω-hydroxylase of Saccharomycopsis lipolytica was assessed by the analytical fractionation technique, originally described by de Duve C., Pressman, B.C., Gianetto, R., Wattiaux, R. and Appelmans, F., and hitherto little, if at all, applied to yeast. Protoplasts were separated in six fractions by differential centrifugation. Some of these fractions were further fractioned by density gradient centrifugation. The distribution of ω-hydroxylase and 15 other constituents chosen as possible markers of its subcellular membranes has been established. ω-Hydroxylase resulted in being bound to a membrane that containes also cytochrome P-450 and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase. This membrane clearly differs from five other subcellular entities. (1) Mitochondria were characterized by particulate malate dehydrogenase, particulate Antimycin A-insensitive NADH-cytochrome c reductase, oligomycin-sensitive and K+-stimulated ATPase pH 9. (2) Most if not all of the catalase and urate oxidase is peroxisomal. (3) Free ribosomes account for most RNA. (4) Nucleoside diphosphatase is for the first time reported in a yeast and appears to belong to an homogeneous population of small membranes. (5) The soluble compartment contains magnesium pyrophosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, 5′-nucleotidase and part of the NADH-cytochrome c reductase. Latent arylesterase and ATPase pH7 have an unspecific distribution. Alkaline phosphodiesterase I has not been detected.  相似文献

The physiology of the cold-shock response in Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis IL1403 at a subzero temperature, and cold-induced adaptation to heat shock, were investigated. Preincubation of cells at 8°C led to the development of cryotolerance, i.e., an enhanced capacity to survive exposure to freezing temperature (-20°C). Pretreatment with chemicals considered to be chaotropic agents did not induce cryotolerance or, in contrast, led to a decrease in survival capacity at -20°C. Interestingly, preincubation at 8°C led also to thermololerance to a 52°C challenge, but preincubation of cells at 42°C for 30 min did not improve their capacity to survive freezing-thawing exposure. These results demonstrate that cold- and heat-shock responses are physiologically linked by a complex relation. Furthermore, food processing at low temperature before subzero or heat treatment may need to be reconsidered.  相似文献

A spin labeled fatty acid (16-doxylstearic acid) was linked to a photochemical reacting group (azido derivative). When the molecule is introduced, at a low concentration, into rabbit sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes, the spectrum before illumination is identical to the spectrum obtained with the corresponding spin labeled fatty acid. After illumination, a large immobilized components is seen. It corresponds to about 70% of the ESR signal of the effectively bound label, at room temperature. The fraction of immobilized component varies with temperature, from 100% at 0°C to 50% at 35°C. Addition of a small amount of detergent (dodecyl octaethylene glycol monoether), under non solubilizing conditions, decreases the fraction of signal due to a strongly immobilized probe. A possible interpretation is that the immobilized signal reflects protein bound spin labels trapped in Ca2+ ATPase oligomers, which are partially dissociated by detergent addition or temperature increase.  相似文献
