Finishing pigs (n = 320) were used in a 35-day study to determine the effects of ractopamine-HCl (RAC) and supplemental Zinc (Zn) level on loin eye area (LEA) and gene expression. Pens were randomly allotted to the following treatments for the final 35 days on feed: a corn-soybean meal diet (CON), a diet with 10 ppm RAC (RAC+), and RAC diet plus added Zn at 75, 150, or 225 ppm. Sixteen pigs per treatment were randomly selected for collection of serial muscle biopsies and carcass data on day 0, 8, 18, and 32 of the treatment phase. Compared to CON carcasses, RAC+ carcasses had 12.6% larger (P = 0.03) LEA. Carcasses from RAC diets with added Zn had a tendency for increased (quadratic, P < 0.10) LEA compared to the RAC+ carcasses. Compared to RAC+ pigs, relative expression of IGF1 decreased with increasing levels of Zn on day 8 and 18 of treatment, but expression levels were similar on day 32 due to Zn treatments increasing in expression while the RAC+ treatment decreased (Zn quadratic × day quadratic, P = 0.04). A similar trend was detected for the expression of β1-receptor where expression levels in the RAC+ pigs were greater than Zn supplemented pigs on day 8 and 18 of the experiment, but the magnitude of difference between the treatments was reduced on day 32 due to a decrease in expression by RAC+ pigs and an increase in expression by the Zn pigs (Zn quadratic × day quadratic, P = 0.01). The ability of Zn to prolong the expression of these two genes may be responsible for the tendency of Zn to increase LEA in RAC supplemented pigs.  相似文献

A laboratory facility specifically designed for controlled human exposure to 60-Hz electric (0 to 16 kV/m) and magnetic (0 to 32 A/m, B = 0 to 40 microT) fields has been constructed. The facility presents uniform fields under controlled temperature and humidity. Special control systems allow collection of physiological data during, as well as before and after, exposure to electric fields at strengths to 16 kV/m under verified double-blind control. Exposure to continuous or intermittent fields is possible in the facility. The capability of obtaining physiological data during actual exposure to constant or intermittent, 60-Hz fields, and of doing so without either the subject or the experimenter being aware of actual field conditions, is a critical factor in valid experimentation.  相似文献

We report the results in 11 cases of secondary flexor tendon reconstruction, employing a silicone rubber rod and a sublimis/profundus tenorrhaphy in the first stage, then hinging out the sublimis tendon on the profundus motor at the second stage. Achievement of a healed proximal tenorrhaphy before the second stage allows (1) inspection of the proximal tenorrhaphy (with assessment of its location, apperance, and strength) and (2) early postoperative motion in a controlled range (with greater confidence in the proximal tenorrhaphy, as rupture after free tendon grafting is not uncommon. The functional results attained were comparable to those in other series of secondary flexor tendon reconstructions.  相似文献

The diet composition was quantified of year‐0 Scaphirhynchus sturgeons during sampling years (2004–2008) from the Middle Mississippi River to evaluate trends in diet. River stage height varied among years and seasons. Water temperature differed among seasons but did not differ among years. The presence of empty stomachs was evident across years, seasons, and size classes of sturgeon. The overall Multivariate Analysis of Variance for frequency of occurrence was significant, suggesting that macroinvertebrate taxa (e.g. Ephemeroptera, Diptera pupae, Chironomidae, ‘Other’) differed among size classes of sturgeon, but not seasons or years. Furthermore, Tukey's pairwise comparisons indicated Ephemeroptera frequency of occurrence differed between medium and large size classes; Diptera pupae differed between small and medium size classes and small and large size classes; Chironomidae differed between small and large size classes and medium and large size classes; the macroinvertebrate taxa category ‘Other’ differed between small and large size classes. Ultimately, because of the link between diet and growth of year‐0 Scaphirhynchus sturgeon, the early life history may affect eventual recruitment to adult stages.  相似文献

Social grooming is an important element of social life in terrestrial primates, inducing the putative benefits of β-endorphin stimulation and group harmony and cohesion. Implicit in many analyses of grooming (e.g. biological markets) are the assumptions of costs and benefits to grooming behaviour. Here, in a review of literature, we investigate the proximate costs and benefits of grooming, as a potentially useful explanatory substrate to the well-documented ultimate (functional) explanations. We find that the hedonic benefits of grooming are well documented. However, we did not find convincing evidence for costs. If proximate costs do exist, they might consist of energetic, cognitive, opportunity costs, or some combination of all of these. Nonetheless, there remains the possibility that grooming costs are negligible, or even that the provision of allogrooming is rewarding in itself. We suggest empirical research to resolve this issue.  相似文献

Ozone is a major component of air pollution. Exposure to this powerful oxidizing agent can cause or exacerbate many lung conditions, especially those involving innate immunity. Surfactant protein-A (SP-A) plays many roles in innate immunity by participating directly in host defense as it exerts opsonin function, or indirectly via its ability to regulate alveolar macrophages and other innate immune cells. The mechanism(s) responsible for ozone-induced pathophysiology, while likely related to oxidative stress, are not well understood.  相似文献

An enriched sulphidogenic consortium capable of mineralizing benzene was used to study the metabolic pathway of anaerobic benzene degradation. Benzoate was detected in active cultures and benzene was confirmed to be the source of this benzoate by the addition of deuterated benzene (D6) and subsequent detection of deuterated benzoate (D5) in active cultures but not in autoclaved controls. Benzoate was utilized by this culture at 1/12 the rate of benzene, while its presence did not inhibit benzene utilization. The benzene utilization rate was reduced, however, in the presence of 2-fluorobenzoate. When the culture was supplemented with [13C]-bicarbonate, the carboxyl group on benzoate was not labelled with [13C]-carbon, suggesting that this transformation relies on a more complex set of reactions than simple addition of carbonate.  相似文献
