The distribution of the above-ground and below-ground biomass of Scots pine in southern Finland were investigated in trees of different ages (18–212 years) from two types of growth site. Secondly, some structural regularities were tested for their independence of age and growth site. Trees were sampled from dominant trees which could be expected to have a comparable position in stands of all ages. All stands were on sorted sediments. The biomass of the sample trees (18 trees) was divided into needles, branch sapwood and heartwood, stem sapwood and heartwood, stem bark, stump, large roots (diameter >20 cm), coarse roots (five classes) and fine roots. The amount of sapwood and heartwood was also estimated from the below-ground compartments. Trees on both types of growth site followed the same pattern of development of the relative shares of biomass compartments, although the growth rates were faster on the more fertile site. The relative amount of sapwood peaked after canopy closure, coinciding with the start of considerable heartwood accumulation. The relative amount of needles and fine roots decreased with age. The same was true of branches but to a lesser degree. The relative share of the below-ground section was independent of tree age. Foliage biomass and sapwood cross-sectional area were linearly correlated, but there were differences between the growth sites. Needle biomass was linearly correlated with crown surface area. The fine root to foliage biomass ratio showed an increasing trend with tree age.  相似文献

We studied the food hoarding behavior of willow tits (Parusmontanus), a scatter-hoarding passerine wintering in dominance-structuredflocks. We examined social influences on microhabitat selectionand spatial cache distribution at temporary feeders. Dominantadult males stored food closer to die feeder and at a greaterrate than did subordinates. When alone, the birds stored foodcloser to the feeder than when accompanied by conspecifics.Conifers were preferred over deciduous trees as cache trees.The subordinates cached more in die outer parts of branchesthan dominants. There were no significant differences in dierelative or absolute heights of die caches, nor in the verticalor horizontal hoarding niche breadths between dominants andsubordinates. We experimentally removed die dominants from dieflock for 90 min and recorded the behavior of die remainingsubordinates immediately after die removal. The removal resultedin a decrease in die hoarding distance of die remaining birds,indicating that die presence of dominants directly affecteddie behavior of subordinates and suggesting that kleptopar-asitismby dominants may be prevented by rarhing farther away. Withdie dominants removed, die subordinates cached at a greaterrate than before die removal. The decrease in die hoarding distanceand increase in die hoarding rate were die only significanteffects of die experiment, perhaps suggesting that, during ashort absence of dominants, die subordinates do not benefitfrom changing dieir caching microhabitat They might be excludedfrom those new, possibly safer, microhabitats after die dominantbird rejoins die flock.  相似文献

Background

Telomeres–the terminal caps of chromosomes–become shorter as individuals age, and there is much interest in determining what causes telomere attrition since this process may play a role in biological aging. The leading hypothesis is that telomere attrition is due to inflammation, exposure to infectious agents, and other types of oxidative stress, which damage telomeres and impair their repair mechanisms. Several lines of evidence support this hypothesis, including observational findings that people exposed to infectious diseases have shorter telomeres. Experimental tests are still needed, however, to distinguish whether infectious diseases actually cause telomere attrition or whether telomere attrition increases susceptibility to infection. Experiments are also needed to determine whether telomere erosion reduces longevity.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We experimentally tested whether repeated exposure to an infectious agent, Salmonella enterica, causes telomere attrition in wild-derived house mice (Mus musculus musculus). We repeatedly infected mice with a genetically diverse cocktail of five different S. enterica strains over seven months, and compared changes in telomere length with sham-infected sibling controls. We measured changes in telomere length of white blood cells (WBC) after five infections using a real-time PCR method. Our results show that repeated Salmonella infections cause telomere attrition in WBCs, and particularly for males, which appeared less disease resistant than females. Interestingly, we also found that individuals having long WBC telomeres at early age were relatively disease resistant during later life. Finally, we found evidence that more rapid telomere attrition increases mortality risk, although this trend was not significant.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results indicate that infectious diseases can cause telomere attrition, and support the idea that telomere length could provide a molecular biomarker for assessing exposure and ability to cope with infectious diseases.  相似文献

To understand carbon cycle and flows of forests, accurate information on tree-component-specific litter production of trees is needed. In the ecosystem models, the litterfall of living trees is usually predicted by the biomass component by average amounts corresponding to site conditions or by multiplying the biomass of the growing stock by the component-specific biomass turnover rate. In this study, the rates of needle biomass turnover of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were derived from the needle-shed dynamics. When the rates for needle litter production were modelled, the weighting and yellowing effects were taken into account. The annual biomass turnover rates of needles for southern and northern Finland are 0.21 and 0.10, respectively. Species-specific estimation of litter production is essential for understanding the carbon cycle and flows of forests. Biomass turnover rates can provide useful litter production estimates for large areas with average biomass values as a source of data.This revised version was published online in March 2005 with corrections to the figures. FOXP3, believed to be the regulatory T (Treg)-cell determining factor, is already expressed at the CD4+CD8+ thymocyte stage, but there is disagreement whether these cells are the precursors of mature CD4+CD8(-) Treg cells. Here, we provide a quantitative analysis of FOXP3 expression in the human thymus. We show that a subset of CD4+CD8+ cells already expressed as much FOXP3 as the FOXP3+ CD4+CD8(-) cells, and like mature Treg cells were CD127 low. In contrast to earlier data, CD8+CD4(-) thymocytes expressed significantly lower levels of FOXP3 than either the CD4+CD8+ or CD4+CD8(-) subsets. The CD4+CD8+ double-positive cells also expressed recombination-activating gene-2, suggesting that they were still immature. Although the FOXP3+ double-positive cells are thus putatively the precursors of the mature CD4+CD8(-)FOXP3+ subset, their frequency did not predict the frequency of more mature Treg cells, and analysis of T-cell antigen receptor repertoire showed clear differences between the two subsets. Although these data do not rule out an independent CD4+CD8+ Treg cell subset, they are consistent with a model of human Treg cell development in which the upregulation of FOXP3 is an early event, but the first FOXP3+ population is still immature and subject to further selection. The upregulation of FOXP3 may thus not be the final determining factor in the commitment of human thymocytes to the Treg cell lineage.  相似文献

Arvicolinae voles are small herbivores relying on constant food availability with weak adaptations to tolerate prolonged food deprivation. The present study performed a comparative analysis on the responses to 4–18 h of food deprivation in the common vole (Microtus arvalis) and the tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus). Both species exhibited rapid decreases in the plasma and liver carbohydrate concentrations during phase I of fasting and the decline in the liver glycogen level was more pronounced in the tundra vole. The plasma thyroxine concentrations of the common vole decreased after 4 h. Lipid mobilization (phase II of fasting) was indicated by the increased plasma free fatty acid levels after 8–18 (the common vole) or 4–18 h (the tundra vole) and by the elevated lipase activities. In the tundra vole, the plasma ghrelin concentrations increased after 12 h possibly to stimulate appetite. Both species showed increased liver lipid concentrations after 4 h and plasma aminotransferase and creatine kinase activities after 12–18 h of food deprivation implying liver dysfunction and skeletal muscle damage. No signs of stimulated protein catabolism characteristic to phase III of fasting were present during 18 h without food.  相似文献

Melanocyte stimulating hormones (MSH) derived from pro-opiomelanocortin have been demonstrated to participate in the central regulation of cardiovascular functions. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the chronic effects of increased melanocortin activation on blood pressure regulation and autonomic nervous system function. We adapted telemetry to transgenic mice overexpressing alpha- and gamma-MSH and measured blood pressure, heart rate and locomotor activity, and analyzed heart rate variability (HRV) in the frequency-domain as well as baroreflex function by the sequence technique. Transgenic (MSH-OE) mice had increased systolic blood pressure but their heart rate was similar to wild-type (WT) controls. The 24-h mean of systolic blood pressure was 132+/-7mmHg in MSH-OE and 113+/-4mmHg in WT mice. Locomotor activity was decreased in the MSH-OE mice. Furthermore, MSH-OE mice showed slower adaptation to mild environmental stress in terms of blood pressure changes. The low frequency (LF) power of HRV tended to be higher in MSH-OE mice compared to WT mice, without a difference in overall variability. The assessment of baroreflex function indicated enhanced baroreflex effectiveness and more frequent baroreflex operations in MSH-OE mice. Baseline heart rate, increased LF power of HRV and increased baroreflex activity may all reflect maintenance of baroreflex integrity and an increase in cardiac vagal activity to counteract the increased blood pressure. These results provide new evidence that long-term activation of the melanocortin system elevates blood pressure without increasing heart rate.  相似文献

Previously, we have shown that 7-week oral nicotine treatment enhances morphine-induced behaviors and dopaminergic activity in the mouse brain. In this study, we further characterized the nicotine-morphine interaction in the mesolimbic and nigrostriatal dopaminergic systems, as well as in the GABAergic control of these systems. In nicotine-pretreated mice, morphine-induced dopamine release in the caudate putamen and nucleus accumbens was significantly augmented, as measured by microdialysis. Chronic nicotine treatment did not change basal extracellular concentrations of dopamine and its metabolites in the caudate putamen and nucleus accumbens, nor did it affect the rate of dopamine synthesis, as assessed by 3-hydroxybenzylhydrazine dihydrochloride-induced DOPA accumulation. GABAergic control of dopaminergic activity was studied by measuring extracellular GABA in the presence of nipecotic acid, an inhibitor of GABA uptake. Acute (0.3 mg/kg or 0.5 mg/kg i.p.) and chronic nicotine, as well as morphine (15 mg/kg s.c.) in control mice decreased nipecotic acid-induced increase in extracellular GABA in the ventral tegmental area/substantia nigra (VTA/SN). In contrast, in nicotine-treated mice, morphine increased GABA levels in the presence of nipecotic acid. We did not find any alterations in GABA(B)-receptor function after chronic nicotine treatment. Thus, our data show that chronic nicotine treatment sensitizes dopaminergic systems to morphine and affects GABAergic systems in the VTA/SN.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate oral health‐related well‐being of the long‐term hospitalised elderly as reported by their primary nurses in relation to subject's oral health assessed either by primary nurses or by a clinical dental examination. Background data: Little is known about oral health‐related well‐being of the medically compromised, long‐term hospitalised elderly, most of whom are unable to express their feelings and opinions. Materials and methods: A cross‐sectional study using a questionnaire for primary nurses about oral health and oral health‐related well‐being regarding functional, pain/discomfort‐related, and psychosocial limitations of the subjects (n = 255) and assessment of oral health by clinical examination. The total number of limitations and the number of limitations in each category was calculated. Results: Most (77%) of our subjects were unable to eat normal food. Functional limitations dominated followed by psychosocial and pain/discomfort‐related limitations. Overall assessment by each subject's primary nurse ranked oral health of as good for 9% of subjects, as moderate for 44%, and as poor for 47%. Clinical examination‐based assessment ranked oral health as good for 19%, as moderate for 33%, and as poor for 48% of our subjects, with good oral health being ranked as good for more men than women (26% vs. 16%; p = 0.045). Fewer limitations were recorded for those with better oral health assessed both by primary nurse and by clinical examination. Conclusion: More efforts are called for to maintain the oral health of the long‐term hospitalised elderly so as to improve their well‐being.  相似文献
