An increasing population of the mute swan Cygnus olor , was studied from its very establishment in 1976 until 1998. As the number of pairs increased, there was a decline in all production parameters, including the average number of clutches per pair, the average number of broods per clutch, and the average number of fledged young per brood. In a multiple regression analysis covering the whole breeding season, the number of pairs and the average number of clutches per pair explained 71% of the variation in the average number of fledglings per pair. During the brood season, the average number of fledglings per brood was an additionally important parameter in explaining fledgling production. Habitat quality seemed to affect breeding: in places occupied earlier more cygnets fledged from a clutch than in habitats inhabited later. The decreased production of young very likely reflects density-dependent effects on reproduction. This density dependence seems to operate on the breeding grounds, since winter harshness did not affect breeding success. Density-dependent processes started acting already when pairs were beginning to nest, and continued during the brood period. Density dependence has apparently not been detected at the pair stage in earlier studies of bird populations.  相似文献

Quantitative analysis of the molecular conformations of the 14-membered macrolide antibiotics erythromycin A and B, clarithromycin, and roxithromycin in the solid state was performed. While the erythronolide macrocycle adopts a very similar folded-out conformation in all the macrolides studied, the proximity of the monosaccharide moieties, L-cladinose and D-desosamine, to each other is demonstrated to be the distinctive feature of their molecular conformations, based on atom-atom interaction energy analysis. More surprisingly, the common features in the relative orientation of the monosaccharide moieties (in terms of non-bonded atom-atom interactions) were revealed between the 14- and 15-membered (azithromycin) macrolide antibiotics. Herein we report on the details of the spatial arrangement of the monosaccharide moieties in these structurally related drug molecules and their influence on the biopharmaceutical properties of erythromycin derivatives.  相似文献

We examined a modifying role of 5HT1A and 5HT2A receptors in the relation between childhood difficult temperament and adulthood hostility in 729 subjects derived from a population-based sample. Subjects were 3–12 years when their childhood temperaments consisting of hyperactivity, low sociability and negative emotionality (i.e. the difficult temperament), were assessed by their mothers. Their adulthood hostility comprising anger, cynicism and paranoia, was measured twice, 17 and 21 years later. It was found that the 5HT1A and 5HT2A receptors were not related to childhood temperament or to adult hostility, but they modified the association between childhood hyperactivity and adult hostility in men. Male carriers of T/T genotype of 5HTR2A who were rated hyperactive by their mothers expressed a high level of hostility, especially that of cynicism, in adulthood. For men with other genetic variants, such an association was not seen. This finding was consistent across the two follow-ups 4 years apart. Further research is needed to clarify whether mother-related hyperactivity adequately describes the temperament of the child or is a reflection of mother's hostile child-rearing attitudes.  相似文献

Complete assignment of the (1)H and (13)C NMR spectra of all possible d-glucopyranosyl-d-glucopyranosides was performed and the (1)H chemical shifts and proton-proton coupling constants were refined by computational spectral analyses (using PERCH NMR software) until full agreement between the calculated and experimental spectra was achieved. To support the experimental results, the (1)H and (13)C chemical shifts and the spin-spin coupling constants between the non-hydroxyl protons of alpha- and beta-d-glucopyranose (1a and 1b) were calculated with density functional theory (DFT) methods at the B3LYP/pcJ-2//B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The effects of different glycosidic linkage types and positions on the glucose ring conformations and on the alpha/beta-ratio of the reducing end hydroxyl groups were investigated. Conformational analyses were also performed for anomerically pure forms of methyl d-glucopyranosides (13a and 13b) and fully protected derivatives such as 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-acetyl-d-glucopyranoses (14a and 14b).  相似文献

Calmodulin (CaM) is a highly conserved protein and a crucial calcium sensor in eukaryotes. CaM is a regulator of hundreds of diverse target proteins. A wealth of studies has been carried out on the structure of CaM, both in the unliganded form and in complexes with target proteins and peptides. The outcome of these studies points toward a high propensity to attain various conformational states, depending on the binding partner. The purpose of this review is to provide examples of different conformations of CaM trapped in the crystal state. In addition, comparisons are made to corresponding studies in solution. The different CaM conformations in crystal structures are also compared based on the positions of the metal ions bound to their EF hands, in terms of distances, angles, and pseudo-torsion angles. Possible caveats and artifacts in CaM crystal structures are discussed, as well as the possibilities of trapping biologically relevant CaM conformations in the crystal state.  相似文献

A series of compounds of formula [{Cu2(OOCCmH2m + 1)4(urea)}2] (m=5-11) have been characterized. X-ray structure analysis for the hexanoate compound reveals a new type of tetranuclear dicopper(II) tetracarboxylate, where the central coordination sphere in [{Cu2(OOCC5H11)4(urea)}2] is composed of two dinuclear dicopper tetracarboxylates, connected via two inter-dinuclear Cu-O coordination bonds at a distance 2.222(2) Å through the apical positions of two dimers. Urea molecules (Cu-O 2.114(2) Å) occupy both outside apical positions of the resulting tetranuclear units. A strong antiferromagnetic behaviour has been shown for [{Cu2(OOCC5H11)4(urea)}2] (−2J=261.4(4) cm−1), and compared with related isolated dinuclear and polymeric hexanoate compounds [Cu2(OOCC5H11)4(urea)2], [Cu2(OOCC5H11)4]n, respectively. Only small differences in the magnetic susceptibility have been found, while EPR spectroscopy showed significantly different results for all three hexanoate compounds, also with the dicopper tetracarboxylate central core and square-pyramidal CuO4O chromophores. A solid-to-solid phase transition for [{Cu2(OOCC5H11)4(urea)}2] was observed by magnetic measurement and analysed for the whole series [{Cu2(OOCCmH2m + 1)4(urea)}2] by TG, DTA, and variable temperature XRD studies.  相似文献

Neural crest (NC) cells may be involved in kidney organogenesis by providing inductive signals and contributing to cells of the renal stroma. We show here that the lumbo-sacral NC cells fate mapped with the aid of Wnt-1 promoter in the mouse migrate close to the metanephros at the initiation of organogenesis but these cells remain superficial to the condensed Pax2-expressing mesenchymal cells. NC-derived cells enter later into the kidney proper from the midline region. The NC cells contribute also to development of the extra-adrenal para-aortic bodies, Zuckerkandl's bodies and the nerve cord of the sympathetic nervous system. Splotch (Sp2H/Sp2H) embryos, having a NC defect in the lumbo-sacral region, develop a normal metanephros even though the kidney does not express the NC markers Sox10, Phox2b and tyrosine hydroxylase. Consistent with the histological findings, the kidneys of Sp2H/Sp2H embryos also express the stromal genes Foxd1, Hoxa10 and RARβ normally. Wnt-1 promoter-marked wild-type LacZ NC cells migrate intensely from the heterologous inducer tissue of the embryonic dorsal spinal cord (SPC) to the kidney mesenchyme, but tubule induction does not depend on NC migration, since the Sp2H/Sp2H SPC also induces tubulogenesis. The Sp2H/Sp2H mesenchyme also remains competent for tubulogenesis. We conclude that the NC cells fate mapped with the aid of Wnt-1 promoter migrate to the close to the metanephros and form later derivatives integrating with the kidney, but they may not be essential to the development of the stromal cells nor they may provide critical morphogenetic signals to regulate early kidney development in vivo.  相似文献

Recent advances in sequencing allow population‐genomic data to be generated for virtually any species. However, approaches to analyse such data lag behind the ability to generate it, particularly in nonmodel species. Linkage disequilibrium (LD, the nonrandom association of alleles from different loci) is a highly sensitive indicator of many evolutionary phenomena including chromosomal inversions, local adaptation and geographical structure. Here, we present linkage disequilibrium network analysis (LDna), which accesses information on LD shared between multiple loci genomewide. In LD networks, vertices represent loci, and connections between vertices represent the LD between them. We analysed such networks in two test cases: a new restriction‐site‐associated DNA sequence (RAD‐seq) data set for Anopheles baimaii, a Southeast Asian malaria vector; and a well‐characterized single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data set from 21 three‐spined stickleback individuals. In each case, we readily identified five distinct LD network clusters (single‐outlier clusters, SOCs), each comprising many loci connected by high LD. In A. baimaii, further population‐genetic analyses supported the inference that each SOC corresponds to a large inversion, consistent with previous cytological studies. For sticklebacks, we inferred that each SOC was associated with a distinct evolutionary phenomenon: two chromosomal inversions, local adaptation, population‐demographic history and geographic structure. LDna is thus a useful exploratory tool, able to give a global overview of LD associated with diverse evolutionary phenomena and identify loci potentially involved. LDna does not require a linkage map or reference genome, so it is applicable to any population‐genomic data set, making it especially valuable for nonmodel species.  相似文献

Creating multiyear cycles in population density demands, in traditional models, causal factors that operate on local populations in a density-dependent way with time lags. However, cycles of the geometrid Epirrita autumnata in northern Europe may be regional, not local; i.e., successive outbreaks occur in different localities. We review possible causes of cycles of E. autumnata under both local and regional scenarios, including large-scale synchrony. Assuming cyclicity is a local phenomenon, individual populations of E. autumnata display peaks but populations all over the outbreak range fluctuate in synchrony. This concept assumes that the peaks at most localities are so low that they do not lead to visible defoliation and easily remain unnoticed. In this scenario, populations are able to start recovery a few years after the crash, i.e., at the time of the mitigation of detrimental delayed density-dependent factors, such as delayed inducible resistance of the host plant or parasitism. In that case, the same factors that lead to crashes also explain the periodicity of cyclic fluctuations. According to the regional cyclicity scenario, different factors can be important in different phases of the cycle. The key is to identify the factors that tend to produce outbreaks with a periodicity of about 10 years. Initiation of the increase phase seems to coincide with maxima in sunspot activity, but causal connections remain unclear. Climatic factor(s) associated with the solar cycle could contribute to the large-scale geographic synchrony.  相似文献
