Is the population turnover of patchy‐distributed annuals determined by dormancy dynamics or dispersal processes? 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

In species with fragmented distribution, regional turnover dynamics is given by the processes of local population extinction and patch (re)colonization by migrants spreading from neighboring occupied patches. In plants with dormant stages (e.g. seeds) and limited dispersal capacity, regional dynamics based on dispersal processes can be overridden by pseudo-turnover determined by signals inducing or breaking dormancy (e.g. due to changes in habitat quality) resulting in a low importance of habitat configuration and size.
In this study, I investigated the turnover dynamics of 5 annual plant species growing on ant mounds of Lasius flavus over three years. I analyzed whether the grassland-scale dynamics of these annuals is influenced by dispersal processes, or alternatively, by pseudo-turnover of soil seed populations. For that purpose I 1) searched for populations formed from soil seeds only, 2) compared the relative contribution of the soil seed bank and seed rain for population restoration after disappearance from the vegetation and 3) investigated whether colonization and extinction events are affected by patch isolation. I assumed if population turnover was rather a result of the soil seed bank dynamics then spatial effects would be hard to detect.
In spite of the presence of populations formed from soil seed and the relatively more important soil seed bank for potential population reestablishment, turnover dynamics followed the predictions of metapopulation theory. Population appearance was more probable in larger and less isolated patches. Probability of disappearance increased with decrease of population size that was negatively influenced by the patch size and its isolation. These findings indicate dispersal processes to be important in the turnover dynamics and only limited contribution of soil seed populations. Their small effectiveness is probably related to the low chance of recurrent disturbance on the mound surface. 相似文献

Adaptative responses of ectothermic organisms to thermal variation typically involve the reorganization of membrane glycerophospholipids (GPLs) to maintain membrane function. We investigated how acclimation at 15, 20 and 25 degrees C during preimaginal development influences the thermal tolerance and the composition of membrane GPLs in adult Drosophila melanogaster. Long-term cold survival was significantly improved by low acclimation temperature. After 60 h at 0 degrees C, more than 80% of the 15 degrees C-acclimated flies survived while none of the 25 degrees C-acclimated flies survived. Cold shock tolerance (1h at subzero temperatures) was also slightly better in the cold acclimated flies. LT50 shifted down by ca 1.5 degrees C in 15 degrees C-acclimated flies in comparison to those acclimated at 25 degrees C. In contrast, heat tolerance was not influenced by acclimation temperature. Low temperature acclimation was associated with the increase in proportion of ethanolamine (from 52.7% to 58.5% in 25 degrees C-acclimated versus 15 degrees C-acclimated flies, respectively) at the expense of choline in GPLs. Relatively small, but statistically significant changes in lipid molecular composition were observed with decreasing acclimation temperature. In particular, the proportions of glycerophosphoethanolamines with linoleic acid (18:2) at the sn-2 position increased. No overall change in the degree of fatty acid unsaturation was observed. Thus, cold tolerance but not heat tolerance was influenced by preimaginal acclimation temperature and correlated with the changes in GPL composition in membranes of adult D. melanogaster. 相似文献

The novel methylphosphonic acid monoethylester (H4dotpOEt) has been synthesized and characterized and their complexes with Sm(III) and Ho(III) ions were studied. Dissociation constants of the ligand are lower than those of H4dota. The stability constants of the Ln(III)-H4dotpOEt complexes are surprisingly much lower that those of H4dota (H4dota = 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid) probably due to a lower coordination ability of the phosphonate monoester groups. Acid-assisted decomplexation studies have shown that both complexes are less kinetically inert than the H4dota complexes, but still much more inert than complexes of open-chain ligands. Nevertheless, the synthesis of 153Sm and 166Ho complexes with this ligand led to stable complexes both in vitro and in vivo. A very low binding of these complexes to hydroxyapatite (HA) and calcified tissues was observed confirming the assumption that a fully ionized phosphonate group(s) is necessary for a strong bone affinity. Both complexes show similar behaviour in vivo and, in general, follow the biodistribution trend of the H4dota complexes with the same metals. 相似文献

Spleens from normal young mice contain lymphocytes that can kill certain in vitro grown Moloney lymphoma lines in a51Cr-release cytotoxicity test. A lymphoid cell without detectable T- or B-cell markers was previously shown to be responsible. Killing activity shows a marked dependence on the genotype of the donor mouse. When tested against a YAC line of strain A origin maintained in vitro spleens of A, A.CA, and A.SW mice had low activity, whereas CBA, C3H, C57L, and C57Bl spleens were highly active. In semisyngeneic F1 crosses with strain A as one parent, reactivity resembled the opposite parental strain. Thus, (A×CBA)F1, (A×C3H)F1, (A×C57L)F1, and (A×C57Bl)F1 were reactive, whereas A×A.CA showed no significant activity. Analysis of the reactivity in (A×C57Bl)F1×A backcross mice suggests that multiple genes are involved. Preliminary linkage analysis suggests at least oneH-2 linked factor. Seven Friesian human lactoferrin (hLf)-transgenic primiparous dairy cows expressing recombinant hLf (rhLf) in their milk were included in the study. After calving, concentrations of rhLf and bovine LF (bLf) in the milk, somatic cell count and milk yield were determined. The concentration of rhLf was found to be constant, about 2.9 mg/mL, throughout the early lactation period of 3 months. The concentration of bLf in colostrum was higher after calving, but decreased rapidly during the first days of lactation. The mean concentration of bLf was 0.15 mg/mL, but concentrations varied between cows from 0.07 mg/mL to 0.26 mg/mL. Based on that, it may be possible to improve the non-specific host defence mechanism in the mammary gland of dairy cows by enhancing the content of rhLf in the milk. 相似文献

The repair of DNA double-strand breaks by homologous recombination commences by nucleolytic degradation of the 5′-terminated strand of the DNA break. This leads to the formation of 3′-tailed DNA, which serves as a substrate for the strand exchange protein Rad51. The nucleoprotein filament then invades homologous DNA to drive template-directed repair. In this review, I discuss mainly the mechanisms of DNA end resection in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which includes short-range resection by Mre11-Rad50-Xrs2 and Sae2, as well as processive long-range resection by Sgs1-Dna2 or Exo1 pathways. Resection mechanisms are highly conserved between yeast and humans, and analogous machineries are found in prokaryotes as well. 相似文献

Superovulation was induced in 56 dairy cows to evaluate the effect of two different regimens using pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). Thirty-two cows (controls) were superovulated between Days 9 and 12 of the estrous cycle with a single dose of PMSG (2 800 IU), while remaining 24 cows (PMSG-primed) received 200 IU of PMSG on Day 4 of the estrous cycle and subsequently a single dose of PMSG (2 800 IU) between Days 8 and 12. The cows in both treatments were each given 0,5 mg of cloprostenol at 48 h after the superovulatory PMSG treatment. They were then artifically inseminated twice, 48 h and 72 h later. Embryos were recovered at sloughter between Days 2 and 5 of the cycle and morphologically evaluated. The number of corpora lutea (CL) in the ovaries of the cows was recorded. The mean number of CL (7.2 vs 17.8) was significantly higher (P 0.01) for PMSG-primed cows. The percentage of recovered ova (60.5 vs 70.2 %) and good embryos (79.3 vs 70.7%) were not significantly different between groups. The percentage of fertilized ova (91.4 vs 83.8%) was significantly (P 0.025) greater for the controls. Results of the study indicate that PMSG-priming increased the ovulation rate in the cows superovulated with PMSG. 相似文献

Chromosome numbers for 98 plants ofF. pallens, 19 ofF. psammophila, F. belensis andF. vaginata, and 44 ofF. ovina (originating from Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia and Latvia) are given. In addition to theF. ovina andF. pallens groups, chromosome counts for the following taxa are also reported:F. alpestris (2n=14) reported for the first time in this work,F. amethystina subsp.amethystina (2n=28),F. brevipila (2n=42),F. cinerea (2n=28),F. rupicola subsp.rupicola (2n=42) andF. versicolor subsp.versicolor (2n=14).InF. pallens, two ploidy levels (2n=2x=14+0-1B, 2n=4x=28+0-1B) as well as two natural triploid plants (2n=21+0-1B), were found. In addition to the fourF. pallens types that have been distinguished in Austria, one new tetraploid type (F. pallens “scabrifolia”) from the Czech Republic and Germany is reported and its taxonomy is discussed. The distributions of the Oberösterreich-Niederösterreich and Pannonisches-HügellandF. pallens types outside of Austria are documented.Only the diploid chromosome number (2n=14) was found inF. psammophila andF. vaginata. Chromosome numbers forF. psammophila subsp.muellerstollii andF. belensis (both 2n=14) were determined here for the first time. Two ploidy levels, 2n=14+0-5B corresponding toF. ovina subsp.ovina and 2n=28 corresponding toF. ovina subsp.guestphalica andF. cf.duernsteinensis were confirmed inF. ovina. Differences in chromosome structure (simple and multiple secondary constrictions) betweenF. pallens as opposed toF. psammophila andF. vaginata are discussed. The relative homogeneity of pelagic environments has been regarded as the reason for the absence of hybrid zones for hybridizing planktonic Daphnia (Crustacea: Cladocera); occasional dominance of interspecific hybrids over parental species was explained by their temporal superiority in fluctuating environments. However, water bodies with spatially varying environmental conditions might facilitate the formation of hybrid zones in plankton. We studied the distribution of species and hybrids of the Daphnia longispina complex in 11 canyon-shaped reservoirs, localities characterized by horizontal environmental gradients (particularly of food supply and size-selective predation); we also analysed patterns of carapace size and fecundity among coexisting taxa. Spatial distribution of taxa agreed with their ecological characteristics; those showing different affinities along longitudinal reservoir profiles differed in size according to the presumed fish predation gradient. Only hybrids of Daphnia galeata with Daphnia cucullata and D. longispina (=hyalina) were recorded. The latter two species preferred opposite ends of gradients, such spatial segregation probably explaining the absence of their hybrids. Distributional patterns were relatively stable in two consecutive summers, apart from a substantial decline of D. galeata X cucullata in the second year. The observed pattern of a hybrid-dominated zone in intermediate conditions suggests that local Daphnia hybrid zones may indeed form within reservoirs. 相似文献

Much has been done to address the challenges of biological invasions, but fundamental questions (e.g., which species invade? Which habitats are invaded? How can invasions be effectively managed?) still need to be answered before the spread and impact of alien taxa can be effectively managed. Questions on the role of biogeography (e.g., how does biogeography influence ecosystem susceptibility, resistance and resilience against invasion?) have the greatest potential to address this goal by increasing our capacity to understand and accurately predict invasions at local, continental and global scales. This paper proposes a framework for the development of ‘Global Networks for Invasion Science’ to help generate approaches to address these critical and fundamentally biogeographic questions. We define global networks on the basis of their focus on research questions at the global scale, collection of primary data, use of standardized protocols and metrics, and commitment to long-term global data. Global networks are critical for the future of invasion science because of their potential to extend beyond the capacity of individual partners to identify global priorities for research agendas and coordinate data collection over space and time, assess risks and emerging trends, understand the complex influences of biogeography on mechanisms of invasion, predict the future of invasion dynamics, and use these new insights to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of evidence-based management techniques. While the pace and scale of global change continues to escalate, strategic and collaborative global networks offer a powerful approach to inform responses to the threats posed by biological invasions. 相似文献
