Qualitative dynamics of three species predator-prey systems

Summary A qualitative analysis of some two and three species predator-prey models is achieved by application of the method of averaging in conjunction with a Lyapunov function constructed from the appropriate Volterra-Lotka model. We calculate the limit cycle solution for a two-species model with a Holling type functional response of the predator to its prey by means of a time-scaled transformation. The existence of a bifurcation of steady states for a community of three species is discussed and the periodic solution around one of the unstable steady states is calculated to the lowest approximation. Several comments are made regarding the behavior of these systems under changes of some control parameters.This work was supported in parts by USERDA, Contract number E(11-1)-3001.     

A new variety of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia characterized by punctate corneal dystrophy and abnormal dermal collagen fibrils

Summary Several individuals from one family are described with a unique form of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. Characteristic features include shorttrunked short stature, punctate corneal dystrophy and marked disorganization of dermal collagen fibrils when examined by transmission electron microscopy. Inheritance is compatible with either dominance and a variable expression or X-linkage. Although the basic defect has not been determined, the tissue distribution is consistent with a defect in a non-collagenous component that affects collagen fibril formation or stability.     

Occurrence of 1st division metaphases in human lymphocyte cultures

Summary Human lymphocytes were cultured for 40, 42 and 44h and analysed for the number of 1st and 2nd division metaphases using the BrdU-Giemsa technique. The most suitable time to obtain the majority of cells in their 1st division concomittant with an adequate mitotic index was 42h. It is recommended that laboratories use sister chromatid differential staining to determine the most suitable culture time for the analysis of 1st division metaphases. This will permit accurate comparisons between individuals and laboratories to be made.     

ACTH-induced inhibition of endogenous rat brain protein phosphorylation in vitro: Structure activity

ACTH_1–24 inhibits the endogenous phosphorylation in vitro of distinct SPM protein bands. Using N-terminal fragments of ACTH, the structure-activity requirements for this effect were studied. A rather complex interaction of the ACTH fragments with endogenous SPM phosphorylation was observed. The effects were not only dependent on the primary structure of the peptide used, but also on the protein band studied and the ATP/SPM ratio used in the incubation system. ACTH_1–24 did not interfere with the ATP-hydrolyzing activity of the SPM preparation, nor did it influence the endogenous phosphatase activity. Therefore, a direct interaction of ACTH with SPM protein kinase(s) is likely to be responsible for its effect on phosphorylation.     

Besondere Haarstrukturen der Soricidae (Mammalia,Insectivora) und ihre taxonomische Deutung

Zusammenfassung Die vorliegende Untersuchung befaßt sich mit besonderen Haarfeinstrukturen der Soricidae, wobei geklärt werden soll, ob dem H-förmigen Haarquerschnitt-Profil eine taxonomische Bedeutung zukommt. Wir überprüften deshalb die betreffenden Haarstrukturen mit Hilfe des REM in 8 Gattungen.Das besondere Haarprofil, das auf das Terminalsegment der Grannenhaare beschränkt ist, findet sich bei folgenden Gattungen:Sorex, Neomys, Blarina undCryptotis, alles Vertreter der Subfamilie Soricinae. Sämtliche untersuchten Vertreter der Subfamilie Crocidurinae, d.h.Crocidura, Praesorex, Suncus undSylvisorex weisen ein einfaches Haarprofil auf.Das H-Profil wird als Synapomorphie der Soricinae angesehen und charakterisiert diese als monophyletische Gruppe. Die haarmorphologischen Kriterien ergänzen somit die osteologischen Kriterien von Repenning (1967) und sprechen für die Beibehaltung der von vielen Autoren abgelehnten Subfamilien.

Special hair structures in Soricidae (Mammalia, Insectivora) and their taxonomic interpretation

Summary The following study should clear up the structures of the H-shaped profile found in the hairs of some shrews and show if it has a taxonomic signification. Therefore we studied the concerned hair structures by scanning electron microscopy in 8 genera.The special hair-shape, which is confined to the terminal segment of guard hairs, is found in the species of the following genera:Sorex, Neomys, Blarina andCryptotis, all members of the subfamily Soricinae. All the examined members of the subfamily Crocidurinae, i.e.Crocidura, Praesorex, Suncus andSylvisorex show a simple hair shape.The H-shaped hair characterizes the Soricinae as a monophyletic unity. Yet, the morphological criteria of hair complete the osteological criteria of Repenning (1967) an plead for the validitiy of the often refuted subfamilies.

The tibial thread-hairs ofAcheta domesticus L. (Saltatoria,Gryllidae)

Summary The ultrastructure of the thread-like hairs (sensilla) on the tibia of the front leg ofAcheta domesticus (Gryllidae) Saltatoria was examined by serial sectioning. The presence of a tubular body indicates that these sensilla are mechanosensitive; electrophysiological measurements also confirmed this. The opposing forces on the articulating apparatus of single hairs and the sensitivity of the single receptor cell were measured after deflection of the hair in different directions. The articulating apparatus is characterized by three cuticular elements: a joint membrane, suspension fibers, and a socket septum. These elements form the basis for a structural bilateral symmetry along whose plane of symmetry the direction line of both the minimum receptor sensitivity and the minimum opposing forces lie. The tubular body embedded in the tip of the socket septum is attached to the base of the hair shaft. The hair provides the leverage for displacing the tubular body and the socket septum limits the extent to which it may be laterally displaced.These investigations have been supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft     

Rat hepatocyte primary cultures

Summary Primary cultures of rat hepatocytes survived well for up to 4 days in defined medium in the presence of dexamethasone but not in its absence. The loss of viability was accompanied by a loss of ultrastructural features characteristic of hepatocytes. The cultures began producing plasminogen activator and a neutral protease after 24 hr in culture. Dexamethasone inhibited the production of both of these substances. The deterioration of the cultures appeared not to be related to plasminogen activator, but prolongation of survival by a variety of protease inhibitors suggested that the neutral protease might contribute to deterioration.
