Summary The increased risk of nonocular cancer seen consistently in studies of survivors of retinoblastoma may be caused in part by the presence of a retinoblastoma gene that also predisposes to other cancers. It has been claimed that this gene also increases the risk for cancer among unaffected relatives of genetic retinoblastoma probands. We report here a population-based study of the risk of nonocular cancer in parents and siblings of persons notified to the Danish Cancer Registry with retinoblastoma during 1943–84. No excess was observed among first degree relatives of 61 genetic retinoblastoma probands, whereas a slight (10%) excess was seen among the parents of 115 nongenetic probands. The latter was the result of significant excesses of malignant melanoma (4 observed, 0.4 expected), multiple myeloma (2 observed, 0.2 expected) and osteogenic sarcoma (1 observed, 0.03 expected). The observed risk pattern cannot be explained by the presence of the retinoblastoma gene.  相似文献

Summary In a population of Little Owls (Athene noctua) at the Lower Rhine (FRG), the factors were studied that influence the size and shape of territories of this non-migrating, all-year territorial owl species. These studies were carried out between September 1984 and June 1987. The birds were individually marked with transmitter packages so that their locomotional movements could be monitored. Using a standard protable stimulus (a dummy with an attached loudspeaker) the territorial boundaries of 19 male Little Owls were surveilled during the different seasons of the year. Male Little Owls defended their territories in all seasons, but distinct seasonal changes of intraspecific aggressiveness and territory size were observed. The seasonal variations of territory size followed a common pattern in all studied Little Owls, in spite of individual differences in the size of the defended areas. The largest territories were defended in March/April during the courtship season . In May/June all male Little Owls reduced the size of their territories . This corresponds to the breeding and nestling period. The yearly minimum of territory size was reached in the summer months July and August when the fledglings were still fed in the parental territory. When the first-year birds started to disperse in autumn (September/October), the size of the defended areas of the adult tenants again increased . In winter (November to February), a further increase in territory size was observed for periods of warm weather . Male Little Owls, however, were less aggressive during winter than in the following courtship season. On cold winter days with a ground cover of snow territorial aggressiveness ceased. Pastures and meadows offered a continuous food supply almost throughout the year. In some seasons they were overproportionally represented in the territories of Little Owls compared to the general surroundings. In reaction to changing accessibility of food, the hunting ranges within the home ranges were shifted much faster than the boundaries of the defended territories. The significance of various factors contributing to the variability of territory size in Little Owls are discussed (e.g. availability of food, seasonal and individual differences in aggressiveness, experience in the occupied area, population density).  相似文献

The stable isotopes 2H and 18O were used to determine the water sources of Eucalyptus camaldulensis at three sites with varying exposure to stream water, all underlain by moderately saline groundwater. Water uptake patterns were a function of the long-term availability of surface water. Trees with permanent access to a stream used some stream water at all times. However, water from soils or the water table commonly made up 50% of these trees' water. Trees beside an ephemeral stream had access to the stream 40–50% of the time (depending on the level of the stream). No more than 30% of the water they used was stream water when it was available. However, stream water use did not vary greatly whether the trees had access to the stream for 2 weeks or 10 months prior to sampling. Trees at the third site only had access to surface water during a flood. These trees did not change their uptake patterns during 2 months inundation compared with dry times, so were not utilising the low-salinity flood water. Pre-dawn leaf water potentials and leaf 13C measurements showed that the trees with permanent access to the stream experienced lower water stress and had lower water use efficiencies than trees at the least frequently flooded site. The trees beside the ephemeral stream appeared to change their water use efficiency in response to the availability of surface water; it was similar to the perennial-stream trees when stream water was available and higher at other times. Despite causing water stress, uptake of soil water and groundwater would be advantageous to E. camaldulensis in this semi-arid area, as it would provide the trees with a supply of nutrients and a reliable source of water. E. camaldulensis at the study site may not be as vulnerable to changes in stream flow and water quality as previously thought.  相似文献

Concepts of primitive angiosperm flowers have changed in recent years due to new studies on relic archaic groups, new paleobotanical finds and the addition of molecular biological techniques to the study of angiosperm systematics and evolution.Magnoliidae are still the hot group, but emphasis is now on small primitive flowers with few organs and also on the great lability of organ number. Of the extant groups, a potential basal position of the paleoherbs has been discussed by some authors. Although some paleoherbs have a simple gynoecium with a single orthotropous ovule, anatropous ovules may still be seen as plesiomorphic in angiosperms. Anatropy is not necessarily a consequence of the advent of closed carpels. It may also exhibit biological advantages under other circumstances as is the case in podocarps among gymnosperms. Valvate anthers have now been found in most larger subgroups of theMagnoliidae (recently also in paleoherbs) and in some Cretaceous fossils. Nevertheless, as seen from its systematic distribution, valvate dehiscence is not necessarily plesiomorphic for the angiosperms, but may be a facultative by-product of the thick connectives and comparatively undifferentiated anther shape inMagnoliidae and lowerHamamelididae. A perianth is relatively simple in extantMagnoliidae or even wanting in some families. In groups with naked flowers the perianth may have been easily lost because integration in the floral architecture was less pronounced than in more advanced angiosperm groups. Problems with the comparison of paleoherb flowers with those ofGnetales are discussed. The rapid growth of information from paleobotany and molecular systematics requires an especially open attitude towards the evaluation of various hypotheses on early flower evolution in the coming years.  相似文献

High-throughput platforms facilitating screening campaigns of environmental samples are needed to discover new products of natural origin counteracting the spreading of antimicrobial resistances constantly threatening human and agricultural health. We applied a combination of droplet microfluidics and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS)-based technologies to access and assess a microbial environmental sample. The cultivation performance of our microfluidics workflow was evaluated in respect to the utilized cultivation media by Illumina amplicon sequencing of a pool of millions of droplets, respectively. This enabled the rational selection of a growth medium supporting the isolation of microbial diversity from soil (five phyla affiliated to 57 genera) including a member of the acidobacterial subgroup 1 (genus Edaphobacter). In a second phase, the entire diversity covered by 1071 cultures was used for an arrayed bioprospecting campaign, resulting in > 6000 extracts tested against human pathogens and agricultural pests. After redundancy curation by using a combinatorial chemical and genomic fingerprinting approach, we assigned the causative agents present in the extracts. Utilizing UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS-guided fractionation and microplate-based screening assays in combination with molecular networking the production of bioactive ionophorous macrotetrolides, phospholipids, the cyclic lipopetides massetolides E, F, H and serratamolide A and many derivatives thereof was shown.  相似文献

Most end-stage renal disease kidneys display accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the renal tubular compartment (tubular interstitial fibrosis – TIF) which is strongly correlated with the future loss of renal function. Although inflammation is a key event in the development of TIF, it can also have a beneficial anti-fibrotic role depending in particular on the stage of the pathology. Chemokines play an important role in monocyte extravasation in the inflammatory process. CCL2 has already been shown to be involved in the development of TIF but CCL7, a close relative of CCL2 and able to bind to similar receptors, has not been studied in renal disease. We therefore studied chemokine CCL7 in a model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO)-induced TIF. We observed that the role of CCL7 differs depending on the stage of the pathology. In early stages (0–8 days), CCL7 deficient (CCL7-KO) mice displayed attenuated TIF potentially involving two mechanisms: an early (0–3 days) decrease of inflammatory cell infiltration followed (3–8 days) by a decrease in tubular ECM production independent of inflammation. In contrast, during later stages of obstruction (10–14 days), CCL7-KO mice displayed increased TIF which was again associated with reduced inflammation. Interestingly, the switch between this anti- to profibrotic effect was accompanied by an increased influx of immunosuppressive regulatory T cells. In conclusion, these results highlight for the first time a dual role for CCL7 in the development of renal TIF, deleterious in early stages but beneficial during later stages.  相似文献
