Cyclocarya paliurus (Batalin) Iljinskaya, an endemic tree of China and the sole living species of a very distinctive genus of Juglandaceae, is described, and an overview of its phylogenetic relationships and fossil record is provided. Fossil occurrences of Cyclocarya indicate that the genus was already differentiated around 55 million years ago and was once widespread in the Northern Hemisphere. The current restriction of Cyclocarya to China is the result of regional extinction in North America and Europe during the Cenozoic.  相似文献

The United States faces numerous invasions by non-native animal species and wildlife pathogens that pose high risks to the economy, the environment, human health and wildlife health. Nevertheless, the Federal government spends less than $500,000 annually on preventing harmful animal invasions in its “injurious species” listing program under the Lacey Act, which can prohibit imports and interstate commerce in designated taxa. This program is ineffective; numerous costly invasions by intentionally-imported animals have occurred despite the Lacey Act. Additionally, the majority of emerging zoonotic diseases worldwide originate in wildlife and the role the wildlife trade plays in disease emergence is increasing over time. Recent findings demonstrate that conducting risk assessments for the wildlife trade is relatively inexpensive and they can provide net economic benefits for the nation. However, in order to accrue those benefits, dramatic policy improvements are needed centered around developing and funding a proactive, rapid, Federal risk assessment program.  相似文献

Community assembly through species invasions is a long-term process, for which vital information regarding future trends can be contained in current patterns. Using comparative analyses of native and exotic plant assemblages from meadow patches on islands in British Columbia, Canada, we examined multiple lines of evidence for ‘invasion debt’, a latent expansion of exotic species populations. We show that: (1) short-dispersing species are underrepresented compared to their long-dispersing counterparts in exotic species only; (2) among species that are invasive elsewhere in North America, a greater proportion of long dispersers are common in the study area and a greater proportion of short dispersers are rare; and (3) time since arrival in the study region is positively related to number of occurrences in exotic species. In addition, we show that a suite of exotic species possesses the facility of rapid long-distance dispersal and ability to establish viable populations on even the most isolated and least disturbed patches. While some highly-dispersive exotic species can rapidly colonize new areas, short dispersers appear to exhibit invasion debt, with their potential distributions only being realized in the long term. Removing or even reducing populations of many rapid colonizers could be extremely difficult; however, for species exhibiting patterns most consistent with invasion debt, an opportunity exists for monitoring and removal to help reduce potential competition with native species.  相似文献

The C termini of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor NR2 subunits are thought to play a major role in the molecular establishment of memory across the Bilateria, via the phenomenon known as long-term potentiation (LTP). Despite their long history of use as models in the study of memory, the expression and structure of the NR2 subunit in the Lophotrochozoa has remained uncategorized. Here, we report the phylogenic relationships of NR subunits across the Bilateria, and the cloning and in situ analysis of expression of NMDA NR1 and NR2 subunits in the monogont rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. RNA in situ hybridization suggests expression of NMDA receptor subunits in B. plicatilis is neural, consistent with expression observed in other species, and ours is the first report confirming NR2 expression in the lophotrochozoan clade. However, the single NR2 subunit identified in B. plicatilis was found to lack the long C terminal domain found in vertebrates, which is believed to modulate LTP. Further investigation revealed that mollusc and annelid NR2 subunits possess long intracellular C terminal domains. As data from molluscs (and particularly Aplysia californica) are the basis for much of our understanding of LTP, understanding how these diverse lophotrochozoan C termini function in vivo will have many implications for how we consider the evolution of the molecular control of learning and memory across the Metazoa as a whole and interpret the results of experiments into this vital component of cognition.  相似文献

Little is known about the evolutionary relationship between vertebrate adrenergic receptors and invertebrate octopamine and tyramine receptors. The complexity of the adrenergic signalling system is believed to be an innovation of the vertebrate lineage but the presence of noradrenaline has been reported in some invertebrate species. The cephalochordate, amphioxus (Branchiostoma floridae), is an ideal model organism for studying the evolution of vertebrate GPCRs, given its unique position at the base of the chordate lineage. Here, we describe the pharmacological characterisation and second messenger coupling abilities of AmphiAmR4, which clusters with α2-adrenergic receptors in a phylogenetic tree but also shares a high sequence similarity to invertebrate octopamine/tyramine receptors in both BLAST and Hidden Markov Model analyses. Thus, it was of particular interest to determine if AmphiAmR4 displayed similar functional properties to the vertebrate α2-adrenergic receptors or to invertebrate octopamine or tyramine receptors. When stably expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, noradrenaline couples the receptor to both the activation of adenylyl cyclase and to the activation of the MAPKinase pathway. Pharmacological studies with a wide range of agonists and antagonists suggest that AmphiAmR4 functions as an α2-adrenergic-like receptor when expressed in CHO cells.  相似文献

This article explores commercial, academic, and national initiatives aimed at using sequencing technologies to generate “actionable” genomic results that can be applied to the clinical management of oncology patients. We argue that the term “actionable” is not merely a buzzword, but signals the emergence of a distinctive sociotechnical regime of genomic medicine in oncology. Unlike other regimes of genomic medicine that are organized around assessing and managing inherited risk for developing cancer (e.g. BRCA testing), actionable regimes aim to generate predictive relationships between genetic information and drug therapies, thereby generating new kinds of clinical actions. We explore how these genomic results are made actionable by articulating them with existing clinical routines, clinical trials, regulatory regimes, and health care systems; and in turn, how clinical sequencing programs have begun to reconfigure knowledge and practices in oncology. Actionability regimes confirm the emergence of bio-clinical decision-making in oncology, whereby the articulation of molecular hypotheses and experimental therapeutics become central to patient care.  相似文献

We present the results of a full year of high-resolution monitoring of hydrologic event-driven export of stream dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the forested Bigelow Brook watershed in Harvard Forest, Massachusetts, USA. A combination of in situ fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) measurement, grab samples, and bioassays was utilized. FDOM was identified as a strong indicator of concentration for dissolved organic carbon (DOC, r 2 = 0.96), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON, r 2 = 0.81), and bioavailable DOC (BDOC, r 2 = 0.81). Relationships between FDOM and concentration were utilized to improve characterization of patterns of hydrological event-driven export and the quantification of annual export. This characterization was possible because DOM composition remained relatively consistent seasonally; however, a subtle shift to increased fluorescence per unit absorbance was observed for summer and fall seasons and percent BDOC did increase slightly with increasing concentrations. The majority of export occurred during pulsed hydrological events, so the greatest impact of bioavailable exports may be on downstream aquatic ecosystems. Export from individual events was highly seasonal in nature with the highest flow weighted mean concentrations (DOCFW) being observed in late summer and fall months, but the highest total export being observed for larger winter storms. Seasonal trends in DOC export coincide with weather driven changes in surface and subsurface flow paths, potential for depletion and rebuilding of a flushable soil organic matter pool, and the availability of terrestrial carbon sources such as leaf litter. Our approach and findings demonstrate the utility of high frequency FDOM measurement to improve estimates of intra-annual temporal trends of DOM export.  相似文献
