Summary The human homologue of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe cell cycle control gene cdc2 has been assigned to chromosome 10. Summary In a geographically wide distribution the life cycles of different populations of the cabbage moth Mamestra brossicae are adapted to a remarkable diversity of climatic conditions. This is undoubtedly a proof of its success in adaptation. Some populations living in regions characterized by a drought period interrupting the growth season are capable of distinguishing between one critical day length signalling the onset of the drought period and another signalling the end of the growth season. This study, therefore, is primarily concerned with the geographical patterns in the variability of the adaptional responses of populations exposed to environmental conditions requiring different strategies and tactics in, synchronizing individual, life cycles. It is also a contribution to our understanding of evolutionary mechanisms maintaining median responses to photoperiodically inductive day lengths in geographically different populations. The populations investigated originated from regions differing in predictability of the incidence, onset and duration of a drought period: Freiburg (48.0°N, Southern Germany), Avignon (44.0°N, Southern France), and Argelès (42.5°N, Southern France). Geographical variation with respect to both onset and duration of a drought period consequently results in clinal variation of the variability of innate day length thresholds triggering aestival dormancy and of innate duration of aestivation. In this paper we considered the influence of geographically changing temperatures on aestival dormancy induction. Even in southern populations of M. brassicae a temperature dependent switch off-mechanism exists which prevents aestival dormancy under certain environmental conditions. The effective temperatures vary geographically, too. Populations of pathogenic Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae were monitored on apparently healthy leaves, blossoms, and fruit from two apple orchards with known histories of blister bark and a pear orchard with a known history of blossom blast. Populations on blossoms and fruits were higher on pears than on apples. Yellow-pigmented, non-pathogenic bacteria might have suppressed or masked the presence of P. syringae pv. syringae on apple trees. Populations of P. syringae pv. syringae on apple and pear leaves fluctuated sharply but higher levels generally occurred during the 1984/85 growing season than during the drier 1983/84 season. This investigation indicates that the resident phase of P. syringae pv. syringae is probably a major source of inoculum for apple blister bark and pear blossom blast in South Africa.  相似文献

Kubo producer-units (families and independent bachelors) could have been self-sufficient in the production of bananas but chose not to be. Nor did they seek self-sufficiency in the production of any combination of staple carbohydrate foods (bananas, tubers, sago flour) or, in the long term, strive for balance in the exchange of food with other producer-units. Despite the fact that bananas, which provided 50% of people's energy needs, were a delayed-return crop Kubo communities were very unstable. This instability and the failure to choose the option of self-sufficiency were connected and were mediated through intense intracommunity sharing that, ultimately, served to negotiate a concern with sorcery. The people grew bananas in the way they did, not out of environmental necessity, but to accommodate the crop to the needs of sharing and, thereby, facilitate community living.  相似文献

Abstract Pseudomonas sp. strain RW611 utilized the ammonium salt of 2-sulfobenzoate as sole source of carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and energy. The xenobiotic sulfo substituent was dioxygenolytically eliminated as sulfite, which was then slowly oxidized to sulfate. 2,3-Dihydroxybenzoate, which resulted from desulfonation underwent meta -cleavage, mediated by 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate 3,4-dioxygenase activity. This enzyme was inhibited by 3-chlorocatechol and 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzoate.  相似文献

Calicotyle urolophi n. sp. is proposed for calicotylines found in the cloaca of three stingaree species, Urolophus cruciatus, U. bucculentus and U. paucimaculatus, collected off the southeastern coast of Tasmania. Variations in the soft body parts were observed between specimens taken from U. cruciatus and U. bucculentus but were not considered sufficient for separation into two species. C. urolophi is differentiated from other Calicotyle spp. found in the South Pacific by the configuration of the tubular male copulatory organ, the structure of the intestinal caeca and the arrangement of the vaginae. Amended diagnoses for the subfamily Calicotylinae and the genus Calicotyle are provided.  相似文献

When grown with nitrate as terminal electron acceptor both the soluble (periplasm, cytoplasm) and the membrane fraction of Spirillum strain 5175 exhibited high nitrite reductase activity. The nitrite reductase obtained from the soluble fraction was purified 76-fold to electrophoretical homogeneity. The enzyme reduced nitrite to ammonia with a specific activity of 723 mol NO inf2 sup- × (mg protein × min)-1. The molecular mass was 58±1 kDa by SDS-PAGE compared to 59±2 kDa determined by size exclusion chromatography under nondenaturing conditions. The enzyme (as isolated) contained 5.97±0.15 heme c molecules/Mr 58 kDa. The absorption spectrum was typical for c-type cytochrome with maxima at 280, 408, 532 and 610 nm (oxidized) and at 420, 523 and 553 nm (dithionite-reduced). The enzyme (as isolated) exhibited a complex set of high-spin and lowspin ferric heme resonances with g-values at 9.82, 3,85, 3.31, 2.95, 2.30 and 1.49 in agreement with data reported for electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of nitrite reductases from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, Wolinella succinogenes and Escherichia coli.Abbreviations DNRA dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia - EPR electron paramagnetic resonance - PAGE polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis - NaPi sodium phosphate - SDS sodium dodecylsulfate  相似文献
