Individual differences scaling is a multidimensional scaling method for finding a common ordination for several data sets. An individual ordination for each data set can then be derived from the common ordination by adjusting the axis lengths so as to maximize the correlations between observed proximities and individual ordination distances. The importance of the various axes for each data set and the mutual similarities and goodness of fit for the individual data sets are described by weight plots. As an example, 46 soft-water lakes in eastern Finland are ordinated on two dimensions according to 3 chemical data sets (water in summer and autumn, sediment) and 4 biological sets (major phytoplankton groups, phytoplankton, surface sediment diatom and cladoceran assemblages). The method seems to be effective as a means of ordination for obtaining the common ordination for the data sets. The major taxonomic groups gave the ordination which differed most clearly from the ordinations of the other data sets. Phytoplankton was most poorly ordinated in all the analyses. The other data sets were fairly coherent. When only biological data sets were ordinated, the diatoms and cladocerans showed rather different patterns. It seems that the cladocerans are best correlated with water chemistry, both according to weights in the joint analysis, and according to correlation between the axes from the biological data sets and the chemical variables.Abbreviations CCA =

This study was undertaken to estimate the total number of cholinergic cells and the percentage of cholinergic cells that contain estrogen receptor-alpha (ER alpha) in the rat basal forebrain. Double immunostaining for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and ER alpha was carried out on 50-microm-thick free-floating sections. Because routine mounting method causes considerable flattening of the sections, we embedded immunostained sections in Durcupan, an epoxy resin known to cause virtually no shrinkage. When this procedure was used the section thickness was well preserved, individual cells could be clearly identified, and subcellular localization of ER alpha immunoreactivity was easy to verify. Cell counting in these sections revealed that the rat basal forebrain contains 26,390 +/- 1097 (mean +/- SEM) cholinergic neurons. This comprises 9674 +/- 504 in the medial septum-vertical diagonal band of Broca, 9403 +/- 484 in the horizontal diagonal band of Broca, and 7312 +/- 281 in the nucleus basalis. In these nuclei, 60%, 46%, and 14% of the cholinergic neurons were co-localized with ER alpha, respectively. Predation risk tends to vary in time. Thus prey animals face a problem of allocating feeding and antipredator effort across different risk situations. A recent model of Lima and Bednekoff (1999) predicts that a prey should allocate more feeding effort to low risk situations and more antipredator effort to high risk situations with increasing relative degree of risk in high risk situations (attack ratio). Furthermore when the proportion of time the prey spends in the high risk situation (p) increases, the prey have to eventually feed also in the high risk situations. However the increase in feeding effort in low risk situations should clearly exceed that in high risk situations as p increases. To test these predictions we measured feeding effort of field voles (Microtus agrestis) exposed to varying presence of least weasel (Mustela nivalis) and its feces in laboratory conditions. We generated quantitative predictions by estimating attack ratios from results of a pilot experiment. The model explained 15% of the observed variation in feeding effort of voles. Further analyses indicated that feeding effort was lower in high risk situations than in low risk situations at high attack ratio, but not at a lower one. Voles exposed to a presence of a weasel for extended periods showed signs of nutritional stress. Still we did not find any increase in feeding effort with increasing p. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is a rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthesis of catecholamines. In zebrafish, two genes encoding
TH have been identified. We cloned them and studied their expression in zebrafish. In adult tissues, th1 mRNA was more abundant than th2 mRNA in the brain and eyes, whereas th2 mRNA was more abundant in the liver, kidney, heart and gills. In developing brain, th1 mRNA was readily detected at 1 day post-fertilization using qPCR and in situ hybridization, whereas th2 mRNA appeared later. th1 was found in 17 catecholaminergic groups in larval brain, whereas th2 was found in four additional groups. A monoclonal antibody commonly used against TH detected preferentially TH1 protein.
The two th genes, probably originated as a result of genome duplication, thus show complementary expression, although th1 is predominant in the brain and th2 in the periphery. th2 may be a novel essential factor in regulation of catecholamine synthesis in zebrafish. 相似文献

Both exercise and high ambient temperatures stimulate the secretion of counterregulatory hormones which can change glucose homeostasis. We studied whether in diabetic patients there are any differences in the hormonal response to exercise performed at cool or warm ambient temperatures. A study was performed on eight male insulin-dependent patients at rest and during exercise at +10 degrees C and +30 degrees C. Exercise consisted of three consecutive 15-min periods at 60% of maximal aerobic capacity. The concentrations of plasma lactate and counterregulatory hormones at rest were similar at warm and cool temperature, whereas prolactin concentration was higher (P less than 0.01) at +30 degrees C. Exercise resulted in an increase in noradrenaline, growth hormone and prolactin (P less than 0.01), prevented the diurnal decrease in cortisol, but had no effect on glucagon. Hormone responses to exercise were similar at +10 degrees C and at +30 degrees C, except for cortisol and noradrenaline which showed greater responses at warm than at cool temperatures. This may have been due to the higher relative work load at warm compared to cool temperatures as suggested by the higher heart rate and greater increase of lactate at +30 degrees C. These data indicate that within a range of ambient temperatures commonly occurring in sports, the response of counterregulatory hormones is largely independent of ambient temperature in insulin-dependent diabetic patients. 相似文献

Morphological variation of Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) s.l.were monitored during two years in one eutrophic pond in centralFinland.
