In order to elucidate the possible effects of rye B chromosomes (Bs) on synapsis and metaphase-I associations of the A set, a comparative study between pachytene and metaphase-I-cells of rye plants carrying different numbers of Bs (0–8) has been carried out. The number of Bs was found to be positively correlated with the frequency of synaptic irregularities of the A set, i.e. multivalents and foldback pairing, and with the frequency of pachytene interlockings. It is proposed that interlockings are the origin of these irregularities because both appeared in close proximity in many nuclei. Examples of A-B pairing are described. The frequency of synaptic abnormalities seems to be unrelated to the mean of A chromosome-bound arms at metaphase I. 相似文献

The effects of four exogenous amino acids (proline, glycine, asparagine and serine) on the production of maize embryogenic callus and on its endogenous amino acid content have been investigated. For this purpose, an established embryogenic line of Type 1 callus from the inbred W64Ao2 has been used. From the results it may be concluded that a concentration of proline exceeding 6 mM is negative for the production of embryogenic callus. When proline is eliminated from the medium, other amino acids tested in certain concentrations yield a percentage of embryogenic callus production that exceeds or equals that of proline. The endogenous free proline content in embryogenic callus is significantly higher than that in non-embryogenic callus regardless of proline presence in the medium. The only exception are the glycine-containing media, in which endogenous free alanine of embryogenic callus increases at the expense of endogenous free proline. This study suggest a positive role of endogenous free proline or alanine accumulation in the embryogenic callus production which might be related to an adaptation to the metabolic changes produced by in vitro culture and embryogenesis induction. Furthermore, these results indicate that treatments with amino acids that are different from proline can be used to improve the efficiency of embryogenic callus production from well established maize callus cultures.Abbreviations Ala

Social feeding strategies of wintering red kites are analyzed in relation to age, food, roost-sites and differences from kite residents. Whereas young and adult wintering kites gathered at roost sites almost daily, adult residents did not, and immature residents only occasionally. Kites using roost sites feed more often on prey prelocated by others, while lone roosters also forage and discover food alone. After finding food, kites tend to shift to a new roost site and foraging area. Two details of the ‘information centre’ hypothesis are confirmed in our study: carcasses are unpredictably found patches, divisible between several individuals. But carcasses disappeared fast in the study area, and no increase with time in the number of birds consuming a carcass was observed, so that information transmission was unconfirmed. When kites leave the roost in groups no leader is detectable. It seems that other types of social foraging are operating, and the model best matching our results is network foraging. 相似文献

A genomic clone encoding the γ-kafirin gene from sorghum was isolated and sequenced. A 2938 bp sequenced fragment includes an intronless open reading frame of 636 nucleotides encoding a putative polypeptide of 212 amino acids. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence of γ-kafirin with the published sequences of γ-prolamins of maize, and Coix revealed highly conserved domains. The N-terminal region of these proteins contains the conserved hexapeptide PPPVHL, which is repeated eight times in γ-zein, four times in γ-kafirin and three times in γ-coixin. The number of PPPVHL repeats accounts predominantly for the differences in the molecular weights of γ-prolamins. Several putative regulatory sequences common to the γ-kafirin and γ-zein genes were identified in both the 5′ and the 3′ flanking regions. Putative GCN4-like regulatory sequences were found at positions ?192 and ?476 in the 5′ flanking region of γ-kafirin. In the 3′ noncoding region, three putative polyadenylation signals, two AATAAT and one AATGAA, were found at positions + 658, + 716, and + 785, respectively. In order to investigate the role of the putative GCN4-like motifs and other possible cis-acting element(s) of the γ-kafirin promoter, a series of deleted and chimeric promoter constructs were introduced into maize, Coix and sorghum tissues by particle bombardment. Histochemical analysis of β-glucuronidase (GUS) activity in different tissues indicated that the element(s) responsible for tissue specificity is probably located in the 285-bp proximal region of the promoter, while the remaining promoter sequence seems to carry the element(s) responsible for the quantitative response. 相似文献

The wind cooling effect determines wind chill equivalent-temperatures, which may be rather different to actual temperature. In a windy region such as Patagonia, this difference may reach a magnitude and persistence to become an important bioclimatic element. This paper quantifies the wind cooling effect in Patagonia by the presentation of equivalent isotherms as an adaptation of the usual isotherm maps to the regional bioclimatic environment. Comparison of glucose fermentation by suspended and gel-entrapped yeast cells: An in vivo nuclear magnetic resonance study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance ((31)P NMR) was used to compare the anaerobic metabolism of glucose by suspended and gel-entrapped Saccharomyces bayanus cells. The fermentation of glucose was carried out in a reaction system with continuous circulation through the NMR sample tube. The intracellular pH and the levels of some phosphorylated compounds were the levels of some phosphorylated compounds were noninvasively monitored by (31)P NMR while glucose, fermentation products, and biomass were determined by analytic techniques comparisons showed that no significant differences are observed in the relative concentrations in the spectra, but distinct profiles for the variation of both intracellular and extracellular pH are found. The internal pH of immobilized cells is maintained at a constant value throughout the fermentation as opposed to freely suspended cells for which a steady decrease in the internal pH occurs. A faster and stronger acidification is also observed in the external medium of the assays with suspended cells. Furthermore, higher yields for ethanol and biomass production and lower yields of fermentation by-products are obtained with immobilized cells. It is concluded that the higher intracellular pH achieved in the presence of the gel matrix had a regulatory effect on the metabolism which favored the ethanol production pathway. A mesocosm experiment was conducted to assess the impact of moderate silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) biomass (41 g m–3 or 850 kg ha–1) on the plankton community and water quality of eutrophic Paranoá Reservoir (Brasília, Brazil). Microzooplankton (copepod nauplii and rotifers <200 m), netphytoplankton (> 20 m), total phytoplankton biomass (expressed as chlorophyll-a) and net primary productivity were significantly reduced by silver carp. Apart from increased nitrogen in the sediment, nutrients and chemical properties of the water were not affected by fish presence. The observed improvements in water quality suggest that stocking silver carp in Paranoá Reservoir to control blue-green algae is a promising biomanipulation practice. 相似文献

Soil micronutrients are capital for the delivery of ecosystem functioning and food provision worldwide. Yet, despite their importance, the global biogeography and ecological drivers of soil micronutrients remain virtually unknown, limiting our capacity to anticipate abrupt unexpected changes in soil micronutrients in the face of climate change. Here, we analyzed >1300 topsoil samples to examine the global distribution of six metallic micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Co and Ni) across all continents, climates and vegetation types. We found that warmer arid and tropical ecosystems, present in the least developed countries, sustain the lowest contents of multiple soil micronutrients. We further provide evidence that temperature increases may potentially result in abrupt and simultaneous reductions in the content of multiple soil micronutrients when a temperature threshold of 12–14°C is crossed, which may be occurring on 3% of the planet over the next century. Altogether, our findings provide fundamental understanding of the global distribution of soil micronutrients, with direct implications for the maintenance of ecosystem functioning, rangeland management and food production in the warmest and poorest regions of the planet. 相似文献
