Background

The rich literature that characterizes the field of pollination biology has focused largely on animal-pollinated plants. At least 10 % of angiosperms are wind pollinated, and this mode of pollination has evolved on multiple occasions among unrelated lineages, and hence this discrepancy in research interest is surprising. Here, the evolution and functional ecology of pollination and mating in wind-pollinated plants are discussed, a theoretical framework for modelling the selection of wind pollination is outlined, and pollen capture and the occurrence of pollen limitation in diverse wind-pollinated herbs are investigated experimentally.

Scope and Conclusions

Wind pollination may commonly evolve to provide reproductive assurance when pollinators are scarce. Evidence is presented that pollen limitation in wind-pollinated plants may not be as common as it is in animal-pollinated species. The studies of pollen capture in wind-pollinated herbs demonstrate that pollen transfer efficiency is not substantially lower than in animal-pollinated plants as is often assumed. These findings challenge the explanation that the evolution of few ovules in wind-pollinated flowers is associated with low pollen loads. Floral and inflorescence architecture is crucial to pollination and mating because of the aerodynamics of wind pollination. Evidence is provided for the importance of plant height, floral position, and stamen and stigma characteristics in promoting effective pollen dispersal and capture. Finally, it is proposed that geitonogamous selfing may alleviate pollen limitation in many wind-pollinated plants with unisexual flowers.Key words: Wind pollination, reproductive assurance, pollen limitation, geitonogamy, sex allocation, inflorescence architecture, mating systems  相似文献

Sequences of 16S rRNA and partial 23S rRNA genes and PCR assays with genotype-specific primers indicated that bacteria in the genus Burkholderia were the predominant root nodule symbionts for four mimosoid legumes (Mimosa pigra, M. casta, M. pudica, and Abarema macradenia) on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Among 51 isolates from these and a fifth mimosoid host (Pithecellobium hymenaeafolium), 44 were Burkholderia strains while the rest were placed in Rhizobium, Mesorhizobium, or Bradyrhizobium. The Burkholderia strains displayed four distinct rRNA sequence types, ranging from 89% to 97% similarity for 23S rRNA and 96.5-98.4% for 16S rRNA. The most common genotype comprised 53% of all isolates sampled and was associated with three legume host species. All Burkholderia genotypes formed nodules on Macroptilium atropurpureum or Mimosa pigra, and sequencing of rRNA genes in strains re-isolated from nodules verified identity with inoculant strains. Sequence analysis of the nitrogenase alpha-subunit gene (nifD) in two of the Burkholderia genotypes indicated that they were most similar to a partial sequence from the nodule-forming strain Burkholderia tuberum STM 678 from South Africa. In addition, a PCR screen with primers specific to Burkholderia nodB genes yielded the expected amplification product in most strains. Comparison of 16S rRNA and partial 23S rRNA phylogenies indicated that tree topologies were significantly incongruent. This implies that relationships across the rRNA region may have been altered by lateral gene transfer events in this Burkholderia population.  相似文献

This article examines the biocultural dynamics of social discrimination and physical disfigurement among people with leprosy, or Hansen's disease (HD), in Banaras, northern India. Based on the narratives and observations ofpeople living in colony and street settings, I trace three destructive processes by which the social stigmata of leprosy become physically expressed. First, strategies of concealment further the progression and spread of HD through late detection and undertreatment. Second, the internalization of stigma can lead to bodily dissociation and injury through self-neglect. Finally, some people intentionally seek injuries under conditions of desperate poverty. As a result of such mortification processes, these people came to embody, quite literally, the prejudices that exacerbated their condition in the first place.  相似文献

A standard dose of 500 IU of eCG is commonly given to progestogen pre-treated anestrous ewes for induction of estrus. Twelve seasonally anestrous and 12 cyclic Western White Face ewes were treated for 12 days with intravaginal sponges impregnated with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP). In trials in both the breeding and nonbreeding seasons, six randomly selected ewes were given 500 IU of eCG at sponge removal to determine the effects of low dose of eCG on ovarian antral follicular dynamics and ovulation. Ultrasound scanning and blood sampling were done daily. Treatment with eCG did not have marked effects on antral follicular growth. All ewes ovulated, except for five of six control anestrous ewes. Luteal structures and progesterone secretion were confirmed in all but the control anestrous ewes. In the breeding season, peak progesterone concentrations were greater (P<0.05) in eCG-treated compared to control ewes. Daily serum estradiol concentrations were greater in the periovulatory period in eCG-treated compared to control ewes (treatment-by-day interaction; P<0.05), particularly in anestrus. Progestogen-treated ewes ovulated follicles from several follicular waves, in contrast to ovulations of follicles from the final wave of the cycle in untreated, cyclic ewes. Anestrous ewes exhibited more frequent follicular waves and FSH peaks compared to cyclic ewes after a progestogen/eCG treatment. In conclusion, 500 IU of eCG given after 12 days of progestogen treatment had limited effects on the dynamics of ovarian follicular waves. However, eCG treatment increased serum concentrations of estradiol during the periovulatory period, particularly in anestrous ewes; this probably resulted in the synchronous estrus and ovulation in anestrous ewes.  相似文献

The binding of streptococcal competence factor (CF) was found to be specific for a strain of streptococcus which was capable of undergoing competence induction. Three other streptococcal strains which could not be induced to competence, did not bind CF. CF binding was independent of time, temperature, age of the culture, and type of growth media employed. Several observations indicated that the receptor sites for CF are located in the bacterial membrane: (i) the retention of CF by spheroplasts, (ii) the binding of CF by isolated membrane fractions, and (iii), the degradation of CF binding capacity of membranes by different chemicals and enzymes.  相似文献

Secondary structure mapping in the electron microscope was applied to ribosomal RNA and precusor ribosomal RNA molecules isolated from nucleoli and the cytoplasm of mouse L-cells. Highly reproducible loop patterns were observed in these molecules. The polarity of L-cell rRNA was determined by partial digestion with 3′-exonuclease. The 28 S region is located at the 5′-end of the 45 S rRNA precursor. Together with earlier experiments on labeling kinetics, these observations established a processing pathway for L-cell rRNA. The 45 S rRNA precursor is cleaved at the 3′-end of the 18 S RNA sequence to produce a 41 S molecule and a spacer-containing fragment (24 S RNA). The 41 S rRNA is cleaved forming mature 18 S rRNA and a 36 S molecule. The 36 S molecule is processed through a 32 S intermediate to the mature 28 S rRNA. This pathway is similar to that found in HeLa cells, except that in L-cells a 36 S molecule occurs in the major pathway and no 20 S precusor to 18 S RNA is found. The processing pathway and its intermediates in L-cells are analogous to those in Xenopus laevis, except for a considerable size difference in all rRNAs except 18 S rRNA.The arrangement of gene and transcribed spacer regions and of secondary structure loops, as well as the shape of the major loops were compared in L-cells, HeLa cell and Xenopus rRNA. The over-all arrangement of regions and loop patterns is very similar in the RNA from these three organisms. The shapes of loops in mature 28 S RNA are also highly conserved in evolution, but the shapes of loops in the transcribed spacer regions vary greatly. These observations suggest that the sequence complementarity that gives rise to this highly conserved secondary structure pattern may have some functional importance.  相似文献

Male meiosis in the grasshopper Stethophyma grossum is well known as an example of proximal chiasma localisation. An investigation of female meiosis in oocytes of this species shows that both the frequency and distribution of chiasmata are quite different from the male situation. Mean chiasma frequency per cell (14.98) in considerably higher in females than in males (11.28) which agrees with the trend established in other comparative studies of male and female meiosis. More strikingly, males and females also show not only different but quite opposite patterns of chiasma distribution. In spermatocytes of males, chiasmata are strictly localised proximally in most bivalents, but in oocytes of females very few chiasmata form in proximal regions and nearly all chiasmata form either in distal or interstitial regions. The genetical significance of these findings is considered.  相似文献
