A Pilot Feasibility Study of Neurofeedback for Children with Autism

Neurofeedback (NFB) is an emerging treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This pilot study examined the feasibility of NFB for children with ASD. Ten children ages 7–12 with high functioning ASD and attention difficulties received a NFB attention training intervention. A standardized checklist captured feasibility, including focus during exercises and academic tasks, as well as off-task behaviors. Active behaviors and vocalizations were the most frequent off-task behaviors. Positive reinforcement and breaks including calm breathing exercises were the most common supports. Low motivation was associated with higher feasibility challenges, yet parental involvement and accommodations were helpful. This pilot study shows that it is feasible to conduct NFB sessions with children with high functioning autism and attention difficulties.     

The effect of LH-RH administration on LH release in the female rabbit.

Intracarotid infusion of LH-RH to female rabbits stimulated a significant increase in plasma LH concentration in the jugular vein. This response varied with the reproductive state of the animal, with a greater release occurring in oestrous (spontaneous or oestrogen-induced) and non-receptive does than in pseudopregnant or ovariectomized animals. If ovariectomized rabbits were pretreated with oestrogen, the pituitary response to LH-RH was restored. These findings suggest that there is little change in pituitary sensitivity to LH-RH infusion between oestrous and non-receptive rabbits, although pseudopregnancy (high physiological levels of progesterone) or ovariectomy inhibit its ability to respond to a releasing-hormone stimulus.     

Fluorometric and liquid chromatographic study of the binding of two coumarins to β-cyclodextrin

The fluorescences of warfarin and phenprocoumon are enhanced following complexation with β-cyclodextrin; (+)-(R)- and (?)-(S)-phenprocoumons have different affinities for this cyclodextrin, whereas the corresponding enantiomers of warfarin have similar binding constants. Apparently, hemiketal formation in the case of warfarin minimizes chiral discrimination. This is confirmed using a β-cyclodextrin bonded chromatography column on which the phenprocoumon enantiomers are separated, whereas those of warfarin are not.     

Vitamin A Reserves of Canadians

—A survey of vitamin A and carotene stores of Canadians at five major centres across Canada was completed. Vitamin A and carotene analyses were performed on approximately 100 human liver specimens obtained at necropsy from each location.Age influenced liver vitamin A stores. Children between 1 and 10 years of age had the highest vitamin A stores while a trend toward lower liver stores occurred between 20 and 40 years of age. Females had higher liver carotene stores than males but there was no such difference in vitamin A stores.Subjects from all locations were classified according to cause of death: accidental, heart and coronary artery diseases, cancer, respiratory diseases and a miscellaneous disease group. The mean liver vitamin A and carotene stores of the accidental death group differed only from the cancer group. In contrast to the disease groups, no case with undetectable vitamin A was found in the accidental death group.The mean vitamin A and carotene stores of Vancouver subjects were generally higher than those for the other locations. Montreal showed more values in the 0-40 μg. per g. range than the other locations. Vancouver had the least number (15%), with Halifax, Ottawa and Winnipeg being intermediate (32%). These data suggest the need for improved nutrition, prophylactic treatment in disease states and the need for further research on the utilization and metabolism of vitamin A.
