The orthocladiine Chironomidae genus Stictocladius Edwards was described originally from South America. Although recognised subsequently as present also in Australia and New Zealand, the true diversity in the Neotropics has remained unclear. After more than a decade of collections of both isolated adults and aquatic immature stages, we can recognise several new taxa and associate some immature stages. Thus, we describe Stictocladius prati n. sp. as male, female, pupa and larva; Stictocladius acutus n. sp. and Stictocladius acrilobus n. sp. as male, female and pupa; Stictocladius fimbriatus n. sp. as male and female; Stictocladius fovigus n. sp. and Stictocladius nudiventer n. sp. as male and pupa; and Stictocladius privicalcar n. sp. and Stictocladius prostatus n. sp. each as male imago alone. The male and female of Stictocladius pulchripennis Edwards is redescribed and the pupa described. The male and female of Stictocladius flavozonatus Edwards and the male of Stictocladius calonotum Edwards are described. Five pupal types are described: Stictocladius sp. A (near S. acrilobus), Stictocladius sp. B (possibly S. calonotum), Stictocladius sp. C (near S. calonotum), Stictocladius sp. D (possibly S. flavozonatus) and Stictocladius sp. E with uncertain affinity. A larva from Chile of the Stictocladius ??sofour type?? (Stictocladius sp. F) and an unreared larva from North America (Stictocladius sp. G) possibly belonging to S. acutus are described. Keys to named Neotropical male and female imagines of Stictocladius and to all pupal forms of Neotropical Stictocladius are provided. Some data concerning fourth instars of Stictocladius are presented. Means of differentiation from putative sister taxon Lopescladius are discussed. 相似文献

The consequent need for an open minded approach towards planning Prosthodontics is discussed, based on each patient's motivation for aesthetics, function, comfort and self esteem. Both functional expectations and motivation to learn effective health behaviour vary widely, and evaluation of both is essential for realistic planning because further tooth loss and the need for partial dentures occur so frequently. The consequent variation in plans raises the question – which are the strategic teeth to maintain a stable dental occlusion or a future tooth stabilised denture? We previously investigated the estrogen receptor α gene (ESR1) as a positional candidate for type 2 diabetes (T2DM), and found
evidence for association between the intron 1-intron 2 region of this gene and T2DM and/or nephropathy in an African American
(AA) population. Our objective was to comprehensively evaluate variants across the entire ESR1 gene for association in AA
with T2DM and end stage renal disease (T2DM–ESRD). One hundred fifty SNPs in ESR1, spanning 476 kb, were genotyped in 577
AA individuals with T2DM–ESRD and 596 AA controls. Genotypic association tests for dominant, additive, and recessive models,
and haplotypic association, were calculated using a χ2 statistic and corresponding P value. Thirty-one SNPs showed nominal evidence for association (P < 0.05) with T2DM–ESRD in one or more genotypic model. After correcting for multiple tests, promoter SNP rs11964281 (nominal
P = 0.000291, adjusted P = 0.0289), and intron 4 SNPs rs1569788 (nominal P = 0.000754, adjusted P = 0.0278) and rs9340969 (nominal P = 0.00109, adjusted P = 0.0467) remained significant at experimentwise error rate (EER) P ≤ 0.05 for the dominant class of tests. Twenty-three of the thirty-one associated SNPs cluster within the intron 4–intron
6 regions. Gender stratification revealed nominal evidence for association with 35 SNPs in females (352 cases; 306 controls)
and seven SNPs in males (225 cases; 290 controls). We have identified a novel region of the ESR1 gene that may contain important
functional polymorphisms in relation to susceptibility to T2DM and/or diabetic nephropathy.

18S ribosomal RNA genes are the most widely used nuclear sequences for
phylogeny reconstruction at higher taxonomic levels in plants. However, due
to a conservative rate of evolution, 18S rDNA alone sometimes provides too
few phylogenetically informative characters to resolve relationships
adequately. Previous studies using partial sequences have suggested the
potential of 26S or large-subunit (LSU) rDNA for phylogeny retrieval at
taxonomic levels comparable to those investigated with 18S rDNA. Here we
explore the patterns of molecular evolution of entire 26S rDNA sequences
and their impact on phylogeny retrieval. We present a protocol for PCR
amplification and sequencing of entire (approximately 3.4 kb) 26S rDNA
sequences as single amplicons, as well as primers that can be used for
amplification and sequencing. These primers proved useful in angiosperms
and Gnetales and likely have broader applicability. With these protocols
and primers, entire 26S rDNA sequences were generated for a diverse array
of 15 seed plants, including basal eudicots, monocots, and higher eudicots,
plus two representatives of Gnetales. Comparisons of sequence dissimilarity
indicate that expansion segments (or divergence domains) evolve 6.4 to 10.2
times as fast as conserved core regions of 26S rDNA sequences in plants.
Additional comparisons indicate that 26S rDNA evolves 1.6 to 2.2 times as
fast as and provides 3.3 times as many phylogenetically informative
characters as 18S rDNA; compared to the chloroplast gene rbcL, 26S rDNA
evolves at 0.44 to 1.0 times its rate and provides 2.0 times as many
phylogenetically informative characters. Expansion segment sequences
analyzed here evolve 1.2 to 3.0 times faster than rbcL, providing 1.5 times
the number of informative characters. Plant expansion segments have a
pattern of evolution distinct from that found in animals, exhibiting less
cryptic sequence simplicity, a lower frequency of insertion and deletion,
and greater phylogenetic potential.

Background
Hypothyroidism is a prevalent endocrine condition. Individuals with this disease are commonly managed through supplementation with synthetic thyroid hormone, with the aim of alleviating symptoms and restoring normal thyroid stimulating hormone levels. Generally this management strategy is effective and well tolerated. However, there is research to suggest that a significant proportion of hypothyroid sufferers are being inadequately managed. Furthermore, hypothyroid patients are more likely to have a decreased sense of well-being and more commonly experience constitutional and neuropsychiatric complaints, even with pharmacological intervention. The current management of hypothyroidism follows a biomedical model. Little consideration has been given to a biopsychosocial approach to this condition. Within the chiropractic profession there is growing support for the use of a biopsychosocial-based intervention called Neuro-Emotional Technique (NET) for this population.Methods/Design
A placebo-controlled, single-blinded, randomised clinical pilot-trial has been designed to assess the influence of Neuro-Emotional Technique on a population with primary overt hypothyroidism. A sample of 102 adults (≥18 years) who meet the inclusion criteria will be randomised to either a treatment group or a placebo group. Each group will receive ten treatments (NET or placebo) over a six week period, and will be monitored for six months. The primary outcome will involve the measurement of depression using the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS). The secondary outcome measures to be used are; serum thyroid stimulating hormone, serum free-thyroxine, serum free-triiodothyronine, serum thyroid peroxidase auto-antibodies, serum thyroglobulin auto-antibodies as well as the measurement of functional health and well-being using the Short-Form-36 Version 2. The emotional states of anxiety and stress will be measured using the DASS. Self-measurement of basal heart rate and basal temperature will also be included among the secondary outcome measures. The primary and secondary measures will be obtained at commencement, six weeks and six months. Measures of basal heart rate and basal temperature will be obtained daily for the six month trial period, with recording to commence one week prior to the intervention.Discussion
The study will provide information on the influence of NET when added to existing management regimens in individuals with primary overt hypothyroidism.Trial Registration

Abstract Two chronosequences of unsaturated, buried loess sediments, ranging in age from <10,000 years to >1 million years, were investigated to reconstruct patterns of microbial ecological succession that have occurred since sediment burial. The relative importance of microbial transport and survival to succession was inferred from sediment ages, porewater ages, patterns of abundance (measured by direct counts, counts of culturable cells, and total phospholipid fatty acids), activities (measured by radiotracer and enzyme assays), and community composition (measured by phospholipid fatty acid patterns and Biolog substrate usage). Core samples were collected at two sites 40 km apart in the Palouse region of eastern Washington State, near the towns of Washtucna and Winona. The Washtucna site was flooded multiple times during the Pleistocene by glacial outburst floods; the Winona site elevation is above flood stage. Sediments at the Washtucna site were collected from near surface to 14.9 m depth, where the sediment age was approximately 250 ka and the porewater age was 3700 years; sample intervals at the Winona site ranged from near surface to 38 m (sediment age: approximately 1 Ma; porewater age: 1200 years). Microbial abundance and activities declined with depth at both sites; however, even the deepest, oldest sediments showed evidence of viable microorganisms. Same-age sediments had equal quantities of microorganisms, but different community types. Differences in community makeup between the two sites can be attributed to differences in groundwater recharge and paleoflooding. Estimates of the microbial community age can be constrained by porewater and sediment ages. In the shallower sediments (<9 m at Washtucna, <12 m at Winona), the microbial communities are likely similar in age to the groundwater; thus, microbial succession has been influenced by recent transport of microorganisms from the surface. In the deeper sediments, the populations may be considerably older than the porewater ages, since microbial transport is severely restricted in unsaturated sediments.
