Though typically limited in aerial extent, soils of high-elevation riparian wetlands have among the highest density of soil
carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) of terrestrial ecosystems and therefore contribute disproportionally to ecosystem services such
as water retention, forage production, wildlife habitat, and reactive N removal. Because much soil C and N is stored in labile
forms in anaerobic conditions, management activities or environmental changes that lead to drying cause mineralization of
labile soil organic matter, and loss of C and N. Meadows are focal points of human activities in mountain regions, often with
incised stream channels from historically heavy grazing exacerbated by extreme runoff events. To quantify soil C and N stores
in montane riparian meadows across hydrologic conditions, 17 meadows between 1950- and 2675-m elevation were selected in the
central Sierra Nevada Range, California, that were classified using the proper functioning condition (PFC) system. Results
indicate that C and N density in whole-solum soil cores were equivalent at forest edge positions of properly functioning,
functioning at-risk, and nonfunctioning condition. Soils under more moist meadow positions in properly functioning meadows
have at least twice the C, N, dissolved organic C, and dissolved organic N (DON) than those under nonfunctioning meadows.
Densities of total N and DON, but not C, of functioning at-risk meadows are significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those of properly functioning meadows at mid-slope and stream-bank positions, suggesting accelerated loss of
N early in degradation processes. Though variable, the soil attributes measured correspond well to the PFC riparian wetland

Methanotrophs use methane (CH4) as a carbon source. They are particularly active in temperate forest soils. However, the rate of change of CH4 oxidation in soil with afforestation or reforestation is poorly understood. Here, soil CH4 oxidation was examined in New Zealand volcanic soils under regenerating native forests following burning, and in a mature native forest. Results were compared with data for pasture to pine land-use change at nearby sites. We show that following soil disturbance, as little as 47 years may be needed for development of a stable methanotrophic community similar to that in the undisturbed native forest soil. Corresponding soil CH4-oxidation rates in the regenerating forest soil have the potential to reach those of the mature forest, but climo-edaphic fators appear limiting. The observed changes in CH4-oxidation rate were directly linked to a prior shift in methanotrophic communities, which suggests microbial control of the terrestrial CH4 flux and identifies the need to account for this response to afforestation and reforestation in global prediction of CH4 emission. 相似文献

EmrE is a small multidrug transporter that contains 110 amino acid residues that form four transmembrane alpha-helices. The three-dimensional structure of EmrE has been determined from two-dimensional crystals by electron cryo-microscopy. EmrE is an asymmetric homo-dimer with one substrate molecule bound in a chamber accessible laterally from one leaflet of the lipid bilayer. Evidence from substrate binding analyses and analytical ultracentrifugation of detergent-solubilised EmrE shows that the minimum functional unit for substrate binding is a dimer. Polyploidy, primarily allopolyploidy, has played a major role throughout flowering plant evolution with an estimated 30-80% of all extant angiosperms carrying traces of ancient or recent polyploidy. One immediate and seemingly invariant phenotypic consequence of genome doubling is larger cell size in polyploids relative to their diploid progenitors. In plants, increases in pollen grain and guard cell sizes exemplify this rule and are often used as surrogate evidence for polyploidy. Tarasa (Malvaceae), a genus of 27 species primarily distributed in the high (>3000 m) Andes, has numerous independently generated tetraploid species, most of which have pollen grains smaller than their putative diploid parents. The tetraploids are also unusual because they are annual, rather than perennial, in habit. Data correlate these apparent anomalies to a change in the breeding system within the genus from xenogamy (outcrossing) in the diploid species to autogamy (inbreeding) in the tetraploids, leading to a convergence in reduced floral morphology. The harsh environment of the high-elevation Andean habitats in which all the tetraploid annuals are found is implicated as a critical factor in shaping the evolution of these unusual polyploids. 相似文献

The activity of large dorsomedial protocerebral A2' neurosecretory neurons were investigated in late pupae of Tenebrio molitor L, which were exposed to a static magnetic field of 320 mT. Experimental groups were C: the control group which was kept at 5 meters from the magnet; CMF: pupae which were reared in control conditions and sacrificed on the eighth day of pupal stage (parents were kept in a magnetic field); and MF: pupae kept in a permanent magnetic field for eight days. Our results indicate the effects of a static magnetic field on the cytological characteristics and activity of large A2' neurosecretory neurons of Tenebrio molitor pupae. 相似文献

Splenic rupture is rare but life threatening complication of mononucleosis syndrome. It has been suggested that subcapsular splenic hematoma formation precedes rupture. The case of 44-year-old, previously healthy, male with splenic hematoma occurring after rising of heavy cargo is reported. Mononucleosis syndrome was suggested based on routine laboratory tests (elevated white blood cell count with predominance of lymphocytes and raised serum transaminases) and CMV infection was confirmed by serological test. Nonoperative management was used since the patient was hemodynamically stable with no further signs of splenic rupture. The same approach has been used in growing number of cases of patients with spontaneous splenic rupture in mononucleosis syndrome. Importance of considering splenic hematoma and/or rupture if abdominal pain occurs in the course of mononucleosis syndrome is outlined as well as importance of routine laboratory tests in suspecting mononucleosis syndrome in otherwise clinically silent patient. 相似文献

Six diverse prokaryotic and five eukaryotic genomes were compared to deduce whether the protein synthesis termination signal has common determinants within and across both kingdoms. Four of the six prokaryotic and all of the eukaryotic genomes investigated demonstrated a similar pattern of nucleotide bias both 5′ and 3′ of the stop codon. A preferred core signal of 4 nt was evident, encompassing the stop codon and the following nucleotide. Codons decoded by hyper-modified tRNAs were over-represented in the region 5′ to the stop codon in genes from both kingdoms. The origin of the 3′ bias was more variable particularly among the prokaryotic organisms. In both kingdoms, genes with the highest expression index exhibited a strong bias but genes with the lowest expression showed none. Absence of bias in parasitic prokaryotes may reflect an absence of pressure to evolve more efficient translation. Experiments were undertaken to determine if a correlation existed between bias in signal abundance and termination efficiency. In Escherichia coli signal abundance correlated with termination efficiency for UAA and UGA stop codons, but not in mammalian cells. Termination signals that were highly inefficient could be made more efficient by increasing the concentration of the cognate decoding release factor. 相似文献
