Abstract. Woody vegetation was studied in 44 sites in Senegal. Species composition and density were analysed with TWINSPAN and Canonical Correspondence Analysis; 16 vegetation types were defined. A supervised, multispectral and multitemporal classification of day and night, dry season NOAA-AVHRR imagery was used to identify their distribution with a classification accuracy ranging from 60–100%.  相似文献

Heat production, free fatty acid and glycerol release from white adipose tissue fat pads from obese (ob/ob) mice and their lean littermates are determined. Heat production was significantly lower in obese mice compared to lean mice when expressed on wet weight basis but not when expressed on DNA basis. Noradrenaline significantly increased the heat production in fat pads from both groups of animals. However, the increase in heat production due to noradrenaline addition in fat pads from lean mice was significantly higher than in fat pads from obese mice. The release of free fatty acids and glycerol before incubation with noradrenaline was similar from fat pads from both groups of animals. Addition of noradrenaline to the fat pads increased the release of free fatty acids and glycerol in both groups of animals, but the increase was significantly larger from fat pads from lean mice. In the absence of noradrenaline the free fatty acid/glycerol ratio (mol/mol) in the effluent was 7.9:1 and 4.8:1 for lean mice and obese mice, respectively. In the presence of noradrenaline the ratio decreased to 3:1 for both groups of animals.  相似文献

Summary Absolute circulating number and functions of blood monocytes (i.e., pinocytosis, phagocytosis, and chemotaxis) were studied in 25 patients with untreated bronchogenic carcinoma and in 28 control subjects. The absolute circulating monocyte count was increased in 20 (80%) of the patients. There was no difference in the pinocytic and phagocytic activity of patient and control monocytes. In contrast, patient monocytes showed depressed chemotactic responsiveness. This defect was more severe in small cell anaplastic carcinoma than in the other histologic types of bronchogenic carcinoma (P=0.001), and may explain the difference in macrophage infiltration seen in solid tumours of the lung. There was no correlation between chemotaxis and clinical stage. Depressed chemotaxis may be related to a plasma factor, since patient plasma inhibited the chemotaxis of control monocytes as well as the activity of chemotactic agents. The defective chemotaxis and the presence of plasma inhibitory activity may interfere with the ability of blood monocytes to accumulate as macrophages in tumour sites. A technique for the simultaneous determination of [35S]sulfide and [14C]carbon dioxide produced in anaerobic aqueous samples dual-labeled with [35S]sulfate and a 14C-organic substrate is described. The method involves the passive distillation of sulfide and carbon dioxide from an acidified water sample and their subsequent separation by selective chemical absorption. The recovery of sulfide was 93% for amounts ranging from 0.35 to 50 μmol; recovery of carbon dioxide was 99% in amounts up to 20 μmol. Within these delineated ranges of total sulfide and carbon dioxide, 1 nmol of [35S]sulfide and 7.5 nmol of [14C]carbon dioxide were separated and quantified. Correction factors were formulated for low levels of radioisotopic cross-contamination by sulfide, carbon dioxide, and volatile organic acids. The overall standard error of the method was ±4% for sulfide and ±6% for carbon dioxide.  相似文献

Summary Two shoot populations of the rhizomatous, patchforming herb Solidago canadensis were studied throughout a developmental cycle in two abandoned pasture sites in southern Ontario. The shoot cohorts that emerged in spring dominated the two populations; subsequent recruitment was very low. Shoot mortality was highest in June and was concentrated in the smallest size classes. Both populations showed a pronounced bimodal size structure for most of the growth cycle. Relative growth rate of shoots declined as the growing season progressed and tended to be lowest in the smallest size classes. Inflorescence production depended on shoot size. The calculated relationship between log mean weight and log density of shoots was not constant during the growth cycle and the calculated maximum biomass values do not transgress the ultimate thinning line suggested from previously published data.Address for proofs and present address: Department of Geography, University of Liverpool, P.O. Determination of seed vigor was attempted by comparing ATP-levels of deteriorating seed to germination percentage and production of dry matter. Immediately after imbibition of any seed lot investigated, a production of ATP took place. This ATP-accumulation invariably reached a plateau after 6 h of imbibition. Two well germinating seed lots of rape, one of cauliflower and one of sugar beet, were artificially aged by means of elevated storage temperature and humidity. Every second week through 16 weeks of deterioration the levels of ATP, ADP and AMP after 7 h of imbibition were compared with the germination percentage. While ADP- and AMP-contents of germinating seed displayed no change (when imbibed 7 h) during the period of artificial aging, seed deterioration was reflected in the ATP-levels long before loss of viability could be detected by the conventional germination test.
When ATP-levels per seed were related to germination percentage throughout the aging, all four seed lots displayed similar patterns although the absolute figures differed. In contrast to the conventional "per seed' basis, however, ATP per gram seed not only displayed similar deterioration patterns, but the absolute values were also of the same magnitude.  相似文献

Summary The insertion of the kanamycin-resistance transposon, Tn903, into the Escherichia coli chromosome was studied. Tn903 is similar in structure to the well known transposons Tn5 and Tn10 in that it has a unique central sequence flanked by inverted repeat sequences extending more than a thousand base pairs. However, the central region of Tn903 has enough single-frame coding capacity only for the drug modifying enzyme, whereas Tn5 and Tn10 carry multigenic unique sequences. In this paper we demonstrate that two different classes of insertion event occur: (1) the first class is a complex event in which all or part of the genome of the bacteriophage lambda vector is co-inserted near the purE locus on the E. coli chromosome (11.7 min); (2) the second class appears to be a simple transposition event in which the transposon alone is inserted at relatively nonspecific sites in the chromosome, as has been described for Tn5 and Tn10. Furthermore both classes show dependency on homology-requiring recombination systems. We suggest that Tn903 transposes infrequently because it must utilize a recA-controlled host function, whereas Tn5 and Tn10 are recA-independent and encode similar but more active functions on the transposon DNA.  相似文献

Free (non-protein) amino acids were measured in whole rat liver and in unmodified lysosomes which were prepared from rat liver by the technique of free-flow electrophoresis. Significant intralysosomal pools of threonine, serine, valine, cystine, methionine, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, lysine and arginine were found. No efflux occurred from rat liver lysosomes in isotonic buffered sucrose at 0°C, but all amino acids showed various degrees of efflux at 200 and 370.  相似文献

This paper offers the suggestion that heat shock inhibition of tubulin synthesis accounts for the molecular mechanism by which periodic heat shocks induce cell synchrony in Tetrahymena. Each heat shock (34 °C) represses tubulin synthesis and blocks the division cycle at the point when the oral structure, rich in microtubules, would normally begin to assemble. Recovery (at 28 °C) from each heat shock is characterized by parallel derepression of tubulin synthesis and of oral development. Changes in protein synthesis patterns are complex when the temperature is shifted up and down between 28 and 34 °C and further experimental support is required in support of the hypothesis here forwarded.  相似文献
