William Buckland not only was an eccentric scientist liked by virtually all his peers, but in the early 1800s he was also one of the foremost authorities on geology. Buckland's vivid sense of humor and the fact that he enjoyed working on rather strange subjects, such as coprolites, rain drop impressions, cave paleontology, and fossil footsteps, provoked a great deal of light-hearted jesting from both his friends and his students. A collection of humorous poems and caricatures were produced to pay homage to the “Geologic Wizard.” Among these fugitive poets and artists were Buckland's good friends Phillip Duncan, Philip Shuttleworth, Henry De la Beche, Richard Whately, William Conybeare, and Thomas Sopwith. Buckland was still the subject of humorous verse well into the 1950s by the contemporary South African poet William Plomer.  相似文献

Heritable maternal effects have important consequences for the evolutionary dynamics of phenotypic traits under selection, but have only rarely been tested for or quantified in evolutionary studies. Here we estimate maternal effects on early-life traits in a feral population of Soay sheep (Ovis aries) from St Kilda, Scotland. We then partition the maternal effects into genetic and environmental components to obtain the first direct estimates of maternal genetic effects in a free-living population, and furthermore test for covariance between direct and maternal genetic effects. Using an animal model approach, direct heritabilities (h2) were low but maternal genetic effects (m2) represented a relatively large proportion of the total phenotypic variance for each trait (birth weight m2=0.119, birth date m2=0.197, natal litter size m2=0.211). A negative correlation between direct and maternal genetic effects was estimated for each trait, but was only statistically significant for natal litter size (ram= -0.714). Total heritabilities (incorporating variance from heritable maternal effects and the direct-maternal genetic covariance) were significant for birth weight and birth date but not for natal litter size. Inadequately specified models greatly overestimated additive genetic variance and hence direct h2 (by a factor of up to 6.45 in the case of birth date). We conclude that failure to model heritable maternal variance can result in over- or under-estimation of the potential for traits to respond to selection, and advocate an increased effort to explicitly measure maternal genetic effects in evolutionary studies.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Sir William Jardine was a polymath; he was one of the world's foremost ornithologists, and ichthyologists, as well as a knowledgeable geologist, entomologist and botanist. He was a talented and skilled artist and engraver and a keen hunter and fisherman. He was also the author of the book The Ichnology of Annandale that represents the first book ever published on the subject of ichnology. It was here in this volume that Jardine coined the word ichnology. It is also one of the rarest ichnology publications, as it is believed that only 135–140 copies were ever printed. This volume remains the most lavishly illustrated book in vertebrate ichnology literature. This paper discusses the work of Jardine, the finds from his estate and his role in defining ichnology as a science.  相似文献

Autophagy and DNA repair are two essential biological mechanisms that maintain cellular homeostasis. Impairment of these mechanisms was associated with several pathologies such as premature aging, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Intrinsic or extrinsic stress stimuli (e.g., reactive oxygen species or ionizing radiation) cause DNA damage. As a biological stress response, autophagy is activated following insults that threaten DNA integrity. Hence, in collaboration with DNA damage repair and response mechanisms, autophagy contributes to the maintenance of genomic stability and integrity. Yet, connections and interactions between these two systems are not fully understood. In this review article, current status of the associations and crosstalk between autophagy and DNA repair systems is documented and discussed.  相似文献

Understanding the maintenance of genetic variation in natural populations is a core aim of evolutionary genetics. Insight can be gained by quantifying selection at the level of the genotype, as opposed to the phenotype. Here, we show that in a natural population of Soay sheep which is polymorphic for coat pattern, recessive genetic variants at the causal gene, agouti signalling protein (ASIP) are associated with reduced lifetime fitness. This was due primarily to a reduction in juvenile survival of uniformly coloured (self-type) sheep, which are homozygous recessive, and occurs despite significantly higher reproductive success in surviving self-type adults. Consistent with their relatively low fitness, we show that the frequency of self-type individuals has declined from 1985 to 2008. Remarkably though, the frequency of the underlying self-allele has increased, because the frequency of heterozygous individuals (who harbour the majority of all self-alleles) has increased. Indeed, the ratio of observed/expected heterozygous individuals has increased during the study, such that there is now a significant excess of heterozygotyes. By employing gene-dropping simulations, we show that microevolutionary trends in the frequency and excess of ASIP heterozygotes are too pronounced to be caused by genetic drift. Studying this polymorphism at the level of phenotype rather than underlying genotype would have failed to detect cryptic fitness differences. We would also have been unable to rule out genetic drift as an evolutionary force driving genetic change. This highlights the importance of resolving the underlying genetic basis of phenotypic variation in explaining evolutionary dynamics.  相似文献

Background

Mouse angiogenin 4 (Ang4) has previously been described as a Paneth cell–derived antimicrobial peptide important in epithelial host defence in the small intestine. However, a source for Ang4 in the large intestine, which is devoid of Paneth cells, has not been defined.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Analysis was performed on Ang4 expression in colonic tissue by qPCR and immunohistochemistry following infection with the large intestine dwelling helminth parasite Trichuris muris. This demonstrated an increase in expression of the peptide following infection of resistant BALB/c mice. Further, histological analysis of colonic tissue revealed the cellular source of this Ang4 to be goblet cells. To elucidate the mechanism of Ang4 expression immunohistochemistry and qPCR for Ang4 was performed on colonic tissue from T. muris infected mouse mutants. Experiments comparing C3H/HeN and C3H/HeJ mice, which have a natural inactivating mutation of TLR4, revealed that Ang4 expression is TLR4 independent. Subsequent experiments with IL-13 and IL-4 receptor alpha deficient mice demonstrated that goblet cell expression of Ang4 is controlled either directly or indirectly by IL-13.

Conclusions

The cellular source of mouse Ang4 in the colon following T. muris infection is the goblet cell and expression is under the control of IL-13.  相似文献

Grain size and grain-size related stresses impart a significant influence on the ichnological character of marginal-marine deposits. This is evident on the New Brunswick coastline of the Bay of Fundy, Canada, where three coarse-grained marginal-marine deposits are studied to assess grain-size controls on the occurrence and type of bioturbation. Firm mud and sand substrates exhibit the greatest diversity and density of bioturbation (i.e., bioturbation intensity). The types of organisms colonizing sands and firm-mud substrates are variable; however, the resultant trace assemblages are similar. Thixotropic muds exhibit significantly reduced trace diversity and density relative to firm mud, reflecting the additional stress placed on the organisms by the relatively soupy consistency of the sediment. A significant change in the trace assemblage occurs when sediment caliber passes the gradational sand—fine gravel boundary.Four main conclusions can be drawn from this study. First, for mixed sand and gravel, fine gravel, and coarse-gravel deposits, the degree of bioturbation (diversity ? density) decreases more rapidly onshore (across the intertidal zone) than is noted in sand or mud deposits. Second, there is a decrease in the degree of bioturbation with increasing grain size for substrates composed of sand-sized and larger clasts. Third, burrows in gravels tend to be lined and/or robust, likely to maintain a stable environment within the burrow. Fourth, in coarse-gravel substrates or substrates with a significant component of coarse gravel, burrows are developed between the clasts and tend to be more permanent structures (than those developed in sand or mud), which are generally continuously occupied.The degree of burrowing noted in these modern gravel deposits contrasts with the relative paucity of biogenic structures reported in conglomerates preserved in the rock record. Based on the intensity of burrowing observed in the gravels, we hypothesize that ancient marginal-marine conglomerates are likely bioturbated, but that these burrows are likely distorted during burial and compaction.  相似文献

Clinical heart failure, often the result of myocardial infarction, may be preceded by a period of compensated left ventricular impairment. There is substantial need for an experimental model that reflects this human condition. In sheep, coronary artery ligation produced consistent left ventricular anteroapical myocardial infarctions resulting in chronic (5 wk), stable hemodynamic changes compared with sham controls, including reductions in ejection fraction (51 +/- 2 vs. 30 +/- 5%, P < 0.001), cardiac output (6.3 +/- 0.2 vs. 5.1 +/- 0.2 l/min, P < 0.01), and arterial pressure (93 +/- 2 vs. 79 +/- 3 mmHg, P < 0.001), and increases in cardiac preload (left atrial pressure, 3.3 +/- 0.1 vs. 8.3 +/- 1.3 mmHg, P < 0.001). These changes were associated with acute and sustained increases in plasma concentrations of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP; 5 wk, 11 +/- 2 vs. 27 +/- 5 pmol/l, P < 0.001), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP; 3 +/- 0.2 vs. 11 +/- 2 pmol/l, P < 0.001), and amino-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-BNP; 17 +/- 3 vs. 42 +/- 12 pmol/l, P < 0.001). Significant correlations were observed between plasma levels of the natriuretic peptides (ANP, day 7 to week 5 samples; BNP and NT-BNP, day 1 to week 5 samples) and changes in left ventricular volumes and ejection fraction. In contrast, renin activity, aldosterone, catecholamines, and endothelin were not chronically elevated postinfarction and were not related to indexes of ventricular function. Coronary artery ligation in sheep produces the pathological, hemodynamic, and neurohormonal characteristics of compensated left ventricular impairment secondary to myocardial infarction. Plasma concentrations of the cardiac natriuretic peptides are sensitive markers of left ventricular dysfunction. This is a reproducible model that reflects the clinical condition and should prove suitable for investigating the pathophysiology of, and experimental therapies in, early left ventricular dysfunction.  相似文献
