The popular concept of predictive–adaptive responses poses that girls growing up without a father present in the family mature and start reproduction earlier because the father''s absence is a cue for environmental harshness and uncertainty that favours switching to a precocious life-history strategy. Most studies supporting this concept have been performed in situations where the father''s absence is caused by divorce or abandonment. Using a dataset of Estonian adolescent girls who had lost their fathers over the period of World War II, we show that father''s death did not affect the rate of pubertal maturation (assessed on the basis of development of breasts and axillary hair) or growth. Father''s death did not affect the age of first birth but, contrary to predictions, reduced lifetime reproductive success. Our findings thus do not support the concept of predictive–adaptive responses and suggest that alternative explanations for covariation between fatherlessness and early maturation are required.  相似文献

Although low school performance is related to attempted and completed suicide, its relationship with suicidal thoughts has been less clear. We conducted a population-based study including 10081 individuals aged 18–29 years in Stockholm, Sweden, and found a clear positive gradient in the risk of lifetime suicidal thoughts with decreasing levels of compulsory school leaving grades. This relationship was somewhat attenuated but remained significant in multivariate models accounting for family background, severe adult psychopathology and adult socioeconomic conditions. School failure is associated with an increased risk of experiencing suicidal thoughts and may also increase the tendency of acting upon them.  相似文献

The seasonal dynamics of the biomass and production of phyto-, zoo- and bacterioplankton was investigated during the vegetation periods (from May to November) in 1985 and 1986 in the pelagial of the large eutrophic lake Peipsi (Estonia). The average values of productions per vegetation period for the investigation years were as follows: phytoplanktion − 203.5 gC · m−2; bacterioplankton − 37.9 gC · m−2; filter-feeding zooplankton − 20.6 gC · m−2 and predatory zooplankton − 1.5 gC · m−2. The herbivorous zooplankton production constituted 10.1% of primary production. This ratio indicates a direct relationship between zoo- and phytoplankton in the food chain — filtrators are feeding mostly on living algae and the detrital food chain seems of little importance. The dominance of large forms (Melosira sp., Aphanothece saxicola), in the phytoplankton during the major part of the vegetation period is assumed to be a result of high grazing pressure on small algae. Zooplankton grazing was investigated in situ in a specially constructed twin bathometer. Experimental measurements revealed, that zooplanktion presence in the experimental vessel actually stimulated the phytoplankton growth in many cases — the negative grazing values have been registered. That could be caused by the stimulation effect of nutrients (N, P), excreted by the concentrated zooplankton in the grazing chamber, which led to an increase of the nongrazed phytoplankton production. Bacteria have satisfied the zooplankton food requirements on average by 11%. Grazing on bacteria increased, when grazing on phytoplankton was somehow disturbed.  相似文献

Measurement of phytohaemagglutinin (PHA)-induced skin swelling is the most popular assay of immune function in avian studies. The mechanisms causing swelling have been relatively well studied; however, very little is known about the potential long term physiological effects of PHA. Here we show that injection of PHA into patagium of captive greenfinches Carduelis chloris increases the concentration of heterophils (phagocytic cells of the innate immune response) in the peripheral blood for at least 30  days. Such long-term consequences should be taken into account when using PHA skin test in studies monitoring changes in individual physiological condition and/or immune status.  相似文献

Macrozoobenthos of Lake Peipsi-Pihkva: long-term biomass changes   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
Macrozoobenthos of the large (3,558 km2) Lake Peipsi-Pihkva was monitored at 22–24 sampling spots yearly in June 1964–1994 as well as 50 shallow-water profiles in mid-summer 1970, 1980, and 1990. No qualitative changes were observed in the bottom fauna, except for the introduction of a Baikalian gammarid species, Gmelinoides fasciatus. The average total biomass in June (without big molluscs) revealed considerable annual fluctuations, with an insignificant general tendency of increase. The increase was significant in the biomass of several Mollusca (including the highly abundant big clam Dreissena polymorpha), Asellus, Gammaridae, and Hirudinea but not in the most abundant animal groups Chironomidae and Oligochaeta. The low biomass of Ephemeroptera and Hydrachnellae decreased significantly. The mid-summer samples taken from the shallow-water zone in three different years revealed the highest biomass in 1980 and the lowest in 1990 (the latter being probably related to the high water level). A gradual decrease in the biomass of the Ephemeroptera and Hydrachnellae as well as the Oligochaeta, Pisidiidae and Bithynia tentaculata occurred in the shallow-water zone, while the Gammaridae increased on the account of the introduced species. No coincidence was found with the neighbouring Lake Võrtsjärv when comparing the annual fluctuations of biomass. A general tendency to a slow increase in total biomass and a decrease in the biomass of the most vulnerable groups Ephemeroptera and Hydrachnellae, probably due to progressing eutrophication, were common for both lakes.  相似文献
