Benefits of group life depend in large part on whether animals remain cohesive, which often requires collective decisions about where and when to move. During a group movement, the leader may be considered as the individual occupying the vanguard position of the group progression, when its movement evokes following by other group members. In nondespotic societies, individuals with greater incentives to move frequently are leaders. During 15 months of observations (1,712 contact hours), we investigated two mantled howler monkey (Alouatta palliata) groups at La Flor de Catemaco (Los Tuxtlas, Mexico) to examine whether sex and female reproductive state influenced leadership likelihood in two contexts: movements toward feeding trees; movements associated with loud calls, a group-defense behavior used by males of this genus. Females led and occupied forward positions during group movements toward feeding trees more often than adult males. Adult females led these movements more frequently when they were gestating than when they were lactating or cycling. There were no differences between sexes in the leadership of group movements associated with loud calls. Leadership by gestating females is perhaps the result of their higher nutritional/energetic needs when compared with cycling females, and of their greater mobility when compared with lactating females carrying dependent offspring. Female leadership during movements toward feeding trees may be a mechanism to optimize access to food resources in mantled howler monkeys.  相似文献

Patients with acquired brain damage (ABD) have suffered a brain lesion that interrupts vital development in the physical, psychological and social spheres. Stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are the two main causes. Exercise training has been used for treatment/prevention of many cardiovascular diseases, but the mechanisms need to be clarified. Thus, our aim was to compare oxidative stress parameters between rats submitted to a swimming training and sedentary rats (control). Twelve male rats were divided into two groups: control and exercise training. The exercise training had daily 1 h swimming sessions for 8 weeks and a load (5% of its body mass) was placed in rat's tail. Thereafter the animals were killed, aorta and heart were surgically removed and blood was collected. Body mass gain, thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), carbonyl content, total reactive antioxidant potential (TRAP), total antioxidant reactivity (TAR), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and catalase (CAT) activity were evaluted. The trained rats showed a lower body mass gain and no modifications on heart. An increased SOD activity was observed on aorta after the training, but no changes were seen for CAT activity, which led to an increased SOD/CAT ratio. The arterial TBARS was also increased for trained rats. The decrease in TRAP in exercise training was the single modification on plasma. Our findings suggest that the increased SOD activity could play a role in vascular adaptations to exercise training. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Evidence has accumulated that there are different modes of regulated cell death, which share overlapping signaling pathways. Cytoskeletal-dependent inter-organellar communication as a result of protein and lipid trafficking in and out of organelles has emerged as a common, key issue in the regulation of cell death modalities. The movement of proteins and lipids between cell compartments is believed to relay death signals in part through modifications of organelles dynamics. Little is known, however, regarding how trafficking is integrated within stress signaling pathways directing organelle-specific remodeling events. In this review, we discuss emerging evidence supporting a role for regulated changes in actin dynamics and intracellular membrane flow. Based on recent findings using the adenovirus E4orf4 death factor as a probing tool to tackle the mechanistic underpinnings that control alternative modes of cell death, we propose the existence of multifunctional platforms at the endosome-Golgi interface regulated by SFK-signaling. These endosomal platforms could be mobilized during cell activation processes to reorganize cellular membranes and promote inter-organelle signaling.  相似文献

Behavioural studies are commonly plagued with data that violate the assumptions of parametric statistics. Consequently, classic nonparametric methods (e.g. rank tests) and novel distribution-free methods (e.g. randomization tests) have been used to a great extent by behaviourists. However, the robustness of such methods in terms of statistical power and type I error have seldom been evaluated. This probably reflects the fact that empirical methods, such as Monte Carlo approaches, are required to assess these concerns. In this study we show that analytical methods cannot always be used to evaluate the robustness of statistical tests, but rather Monte Carlo approaches must be employed. We detail empirical protocols for estimating power and type I error rates for parametric, nonparametric and randomization methods, and demonstrate their application for an analysis of variance and a regression/correlation analysis design. Together, this study provides a framework from which behaviourists can compare the reliability of different methods for data analysis, serving as a basis for selecting the most appropriate statistical test given the characteristics of data at hand. The effect of killer strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the growth of sensitive strains during must fermentation was studied by using a new method to monitor yeast populations. The capability of killer yeast strains to eliminate sensitive strains depends on the initial proportion of killer yeasts, the susceptibility of sensitive strains, and the treatment of the must. In sterile filtered must, an initial proportion of 2-6% of killer yeasts was responsible for protracted fermentation and suppression of isogenic sensitive strains. A more variable initial proportion was needed to get the same effect with non-isogenic strains. The suspended solids that remain in the must after cold-settling decreased killer toxin effect. The addition of bentonite to the must avoided protracted fermentation and the suppression of sensitive strains; however, the addition of yeast dietary nutrients with yeast cell walls did not, although it decreased fermentation lag.  相似文献

The essential oils isolated from leaves of ten and from unripe berries of eight populations of Laurus azorica (Seub.) Franco, collected on five islands of the Azorean archipelago, were analysed by GC and GC-MS. All oil samples were dominated by their monoterpene fraction (60-94%), alpha-pinene (15-37%) and 1,8-cineole (12-31%) being the main components of the leaf oils, while trans-beta-ocimene (27-45%) and alpha-pinene (12-22%) were the main components of the oils from the berries. The sesquiterpene fractions of the oils ranged from 3 to 17% and the main components were beta-caryophyllene (traces-8%) and beta-elemene (traces-3%) both in the leaf and berry oils. Some phenylpropanoid components were also present, in total amounting to 17%, trans-cinnamyl acetate (215% of the leaf oils) being the main component of this fraction. Cluster analysis of the enantiomeric composition of alpha- and beta-pinene in the oils from the leaves clearly showed two groups, one constituted by the two populations growing on the island S. Jorge, and the other constituted by the remaining populations.  相似文献
