Comparative culture studies on isolates from Lanzarote (Canary Islands) and from Danish waters of Giraudia sphacelarioides show that temperature plays the key role to determine its geographical distribution. Experiments show that the upper lethal temperature is the same for both isolates 26.5—-31.1°C for microthalli, and formation of macrothalli is inhibited between 23.2 and 26.5°C. The lower lethal temperature for both micro- and macrothalli in the Lanzarote isolate is between 10.8° C and 7.6°C, while the Danish isolate survives 54°C. The microthallus is thus the more persistent stage in relation to temperature, while the macrothalli occur only when more suitable conditions exist in nature. In the North Atlantic Ocean G. sphacelarioides is distributed over approximately 30° latitudes with severe winter temperatures especially in Danish waters. This distribution can only be explained by ecotypic differentiation. In Danish waters salinity decreases from c. 30 ‰ in the northern Kattegat to below 8 ‰ in the inner parts and therefore becomes an important factor for the immigration of species into the Baltic Sea. Combined salinity (30–20–10–5 ‰) and temperature (4 to 30°C) experiments show that the Lanzarote isolate only grows at 20 ‰ in an attenuated temperature interval and at 10 ‰ only fertile microthalli are observed, however, with limited liberation of swarmers. The Danish isolate grows and reproduces also at salinities from 20–5 ‰ both as microand macrothalli, but in a still more attenuated temperature interval, and the morphology of the macrothalli becomes increasingly aberrant vs. decreasing salinity. This is in agreement with the fact that G. sphacelarioides is reported from the northern part of Kattegat with salinity from 28—-25 ‰, and it is only recorded a few times in the southern part of Kattegat and limited by the 10 ‰ isohaline.  相似文献

Previous twin studies have indicated that approximately 25% of the variation in life span can be attributed to genetic factors and recent studies have also suggested a moderate clustering of extreme longevity within families. Here we discuss various definitions of extreme longevity and some analytical approaches with special attention to the challenges due to censored data. Lexis diagrams are provided for the Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Norwegian, and Swedish Twin registries hereby outlining possibilities for longevity studies within GenomEUtwin. We extend previous analyses of lifespan for the Danish 1870-1900 twin cohorts to include the new 1901-1910 cohorts, which are consistent with the previous findings. The size of the twin cohorts in GenomEUtwin and the existence of population-based, nationwide health and death registers make epidemiological studies of longevity very powerful. The combined GenomEUtwin sample will also allow detailed age-specific heritability analyses of lifespan. Finally, it will provide a resource for identifying unusual sibships (i.e., dizygotic twin pairs) where both survived to extreme ages, as a basis for discovering genetic variants of importance for extreme survival.  相似文献

Principal components analysis (PCA) was applied to summarize variation in 23 morphological characters scored from nine late-flowering dune populations of Dactylorhiza incarnata (Orchidaceae) in Wales, The Netherlands, and Denmark. The Dutch and Danish groups of populations were vaguely separated in a PCA conducted on populations, and a very broad overlap between them was found in a PCA conducted on individual specimens. On the other hand, a clear morphological distinction between the Welsh and continental groups of populations appeared from both PCAs. The probability of each character to distinguish correctly between the main groups of populations was estimated. Three characters were found to distinguish reliably (success ≥ 90 %) between the Welsh and continental groups of populations, while no character was found to distinguish reliably between the Dutch and Danish groups of populations. It is concluded that the Welsh and Dutch/Danish populations represent two distinct taxa distributed in the British Isles and in continental Northwestern Europe, respectively. The British taxon is recognized as D. incarnata subsp. coccinea and the continental one as D. incarnata subsp. lobelii (stat. nov.). Brief taxonomic accounts are provided.  相似文献

The distribution of 725 species and 4 subspecies of vascular plants in 522 grid squares of 50×50 km within Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden was analysed by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). Two phytogeographical gradients were recognized: a major gradient running both latitudinally and altitudinally, from southern and lowland areas to northern and mountain districts, and from southerly distributed species to alpine and northerly distributed species, and a secondary gradient running from eastern districts and easterly distributed species to western districts and westerly distributed species. The results are in agreement with previous recognized phytogeographical patterns within the considered area. Possible ecological and historical causes for these patterns are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Kuckuckia spinosa and Kuckuckia kylinii are distinguished mainly by the presence of basally sheathed true hairs in the latter. However, culture studies have shown that the sheath is an ephemeral structure as it splits, breaks off, and the basal remnant disintegrates and disappears eventually. Therefore, Kuckuckia kylinii gradually develops into Kuckuckia spinosa , also with regard to filament diameter. Consequently, the two species are merged with priority to K. spinosa. The life history is of the direct type as the swarmers from the plurilocular sporangia develop by immediate differentiation into plants similar to the mother plant. It has been confirmed experimentally that this species belongs to the warm temperate Mediterranean-Atlantic group with a southern reproductive boundary close to 25°C and a northern reproductive boundary close to the 10°C summer isotherms. This is the first report of this species from the Canary Islands.  相似文献

Extracellular compounds isolated from embryogenic carrot cell suspension cultures increase, by 1.5 to 6-fold, end-stage embryo production when added back to carrot cultures initiating embryogenesis. The causative factors related to the enhancement of embryo production are most likely to be extracellular, high molecular weight proteins found in the embryo-free medium (EFM) after somatic embryos have been formed. The addition of heat-treated EFM to fresh cultures did not result in enhancing effects on the production of end-stage embryos. However, the addition of compounds precipitated from EFM, by high concentrations of salt, accelerated by four days the formation of comparable amounts of end-stage embryos and surpassed total end-stage embryo levels by a factor of 4-6, dependent on the precipitate dose. These results suggest that heat-labile polypeptide molecules may be responsible for growth factor-like effects during somatic embryogenesis.  相似文献

The terminal steps of oxidative phosphorylation include transport of phosphate and ADP into the mitochondrial matrix, synthesis of ATP in the matrix, and transport of the product ATP into the cytosol where it can be utilized to perform cellular work. Three nuclear genome encoded membrane proteins, namely, the phosphate carrier (PHC), the adenine nucleotide carrier (ANT), and the ATP synthase complex, consisting of at least 13 individual subunits, catalyze these reactions. The locations of the and subunits of the mitochondrial ATP synthase complex and the mitochondrial phosphate carrier, PHC, on human chromosomes were determined using cloned rat liver cDNA as probes. Human homologues of the subunit are on chromosomes 9 and 18, the subunit are on chromosomes 10 and 14, and the PHC was localized to chromosome 12.  相似文献

Here we show that most macromolecular biosynthesis reactions in growing bacteria are sub-saturated with substrate. The experiments should in part test predictions from a previously proposed model (Jensen & Pedersen 1990) which proposed a central role for the rates of the RNA and peptide chain elongation reactions in determining the concentration of initiation competent RNA polymerases and ribosomes and thereby the initiation frequencies for these reactions. We have shown that synthesis of ribosomal RNA and the concentration of ppGpp did not exhibit the normal inverse correlation under balanced growth conditions in batch cultures when the RNA chain elongation rate was limited by substrate supply. The RNA chain elongation rate for the polymerase transcribinglacZ mRNA was directly measured and found to be reduced by two-fold under conditions of high ppGpp levels. In the case of translation, we have shown that the peptide elongation rate varied at different types of codons and even among codons read by the same tRNA species. The faster translated codons probably have the highest cognate tRNA concentration and the highest affinity to the tRNA. Thus, the ribosome may operate close to saturation at some codons and be unsaturated at synonymous codons. Therefore, not only translation of the codons for the seven amino acids, whose biosynthesis is regulated by attenuation, but also a substantial fraction of the other translation reactions may be unsaturated. Recently, we have obtained results which indicate that also many ribosome binding sites are unsaturated with their substrate, i.e. with ribosomes. This observation affects the interpretation of many results obtained by use of reporter genes, because the expression from such genes is strongly influenced by the general physiology of the cell.  相似文献

Samples from fed-batch fermentations of Penicillium chrysogenum on complex medium are rheologically characterized. The behavior is well described by a power law model for which the parameters are estimates. Furthermore, two types of model media are characterized and compared with the real fermentation samples. Xanthan solutions are found to mimic the rheological properties of the filamentous fungi much better than carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions. (c) 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
