Cecropia (Cecropiaceae) is a Neotropical genus of pioneer plants. A review of bat/plant dispersal interactions revealed that 15 species of Cecropia are consumed by 32 species of bats. In French Guiana, bats were captured in primary and secondary forests, yielding 936 fecal samples with diaspores, among which 162 contained fruits of C. obtusa, C. palmata, and C. sciadophylla. A comparative morphological and anatomical study of fruits and seeds taken directly from herbarium specimens, bat feces, and an experimental soil seed bank was made. Contrary to previous reports, the dispersal unit of Cecropia is the fruit not the seed. Bats consume the infructescence, digest pulp derived from the enlarged, fleshy perianth, and defecate the fruits. The mucilaginous pericarp of Cecropia is described. The external mucilage production of Cecropia may facilitate endozoochory. The exocarp and part of the mesocarp may be lost after passage through the digestive tract of bats, but fruits buried for a year in the soil seed bank remain structurally unchanged. Fruit characters were found to be useful for identifying species of bat-dispersed Cecropia. Bat dispersal is not necessary for seed germination but it increases seed survival and subsequent germination. Fruit structure plays a significant role in seed longevity. 相似文献

Olfactory contribution to Fos expression during mating in inexperienced male hamsters 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Male hamsters are very dependent on chemosensory cues for normal mating
behavior. We have previously reported that central, vomeronasal pathways
are intensely and selectively activated during mating or pheromonal
stimulation. The contribution of main olfactory sensory input to the
patterns of c-fos activation was investigated in this study. Sexually
inexperienced male hamsters were either made anosmic by intranasal infusion
of zinc sulfate or remained intact. Fos protein immunoreactivity was
analyzed in main olfactory and vomeronasal pathways of the zinc
sulfate-treated, anosmic animals after mating with receptive females for 45
min, and compared with Fos patterns seen in intact mating animals, some of
which have been described in a previous publication. The zinc
sulfate-treated anosmic males described here all mated when given access to
receptive females. Whether mated or unstimulated, anosmic males had little
or no Fos expression in main olfactory pathways; significantly less even
than in unstimulated intact animals. Mating did not increase Fos expression
in main olfactory pathways of intact animals over that of unstimulated
intact controls. However, Fos expression in central vomeronasal pathways
was significantly higher in mating anosmic males, as in intact males,
compared with appropriate non-mating controls. Fos expression was
significantly different between intact and zinc sulfate-treated anosmic
mating males in only one area studied. The rostral anterior medial
amygdala, known to receive a small olfactory terminal field, had
significantly lower Fos expression in zinc sulfate-treated anosmic males
that mated when compared with intact-mating animals. Thus, functional main
olfactory input to the rostral vomeronasal amygdala can be demonstrated but
does not appear to be critical for mating behavior in previously
inexperienced male hamsters with intact vomeronasal organs. Other main
olfactory input appears to have a negligible contribution to Fos-patterns
in such animals.

Intermediate filaments have been isolated from rabbit intradural spinal nerve roots by the axonal flotation method. This method was modified to avoid exposure of axons to low ionic strength medium. The purified filaments are morphologically 75-80 percent pure. The gel electrophoretogram shows four major bands migrating at 200,000, 145,000, 68,000, and 60,000 daltons, respectively. A similar preparation from rabbit brain shows four major polypeptides with mol wt of 200,000 145,000, 68,000, and 51,000 daltons. These results indicate that the neurofilament is composed of a triplet of polypepetides with mol wt of 200,000, 145,000, and 68,000 daltons. The 51,000-dalton band that appears in brain filament preparations as the major polypeptide seems to be of glial origin. The significance of the 60,000- dalton band in the nerve root filament preparation is unclear at this time. Antibodies raised against two of the triplet proteins isolated from calf brain localize by immunofluorescence to neurons in central and peripheral nerve. On the other hand, an antibody to the 51,000-dalton polypeptide gives only glial staining in the brain, and very weak peripheral nerve staining. Prolonged exposure of axons to low ionic strength medium solubilizes almost all of the triplet polypeptides, leaving behind only the 51,000- dalton component. This would indicate that the neurofilament is soluble at low ionic strength, whereas the glial filament is not. These results indicate that neurofilaments and glial filaments are composed of different polypeptides and have different solubility characteristics. 相似文献

ObjectiveTo describe important sequelae occurring among a cohort of children aged 5 years who had had meningitis during the first year of life and who had been identified by a prospective national study of meningitis in infancy in England and Wales between 1985 and 1987.DesignFollow up questionnaires asking about the children''s health and development were sent to general practitioners and parents of the children and to parents of matched controls. The organism that caused the infection and age at infection were also recorded.SettingEngland and Wales.ParticipantsGeneral practitioners and parents of children who had had meningitis before the age of 1 year and of matched controls.ResultsAltogether, 1584 of 1717 (92.2%) children who had had meningitis and 1391 of 1485 (93.6%) controls were successfully followed up. Among children who survived to age 5 years 247 of 1584 (15.6%) had a disability; there was a 10-fold increase in the risk of severe or moderate disability at 5 years of age among children who had had meningitis (relative risk 10.3, 95% confidence interval 6.7 to 16.0, P<0.001). There was considerable variation in the rates of severe or moderate disability in children infected with different organisms.ConclusionThe long term consequences of having meningitis during the first year of life are significant: 32 of 1717 (1.8%) children died within five years. Not only did almost a fifth of children with meningitis have a permanent, severe or moderately severe disability, but subtle deficits were also more prevalent.

The contrast between regular and irregular inflectional morphology has been useful in investigating the functional and neural architecture of language. However, most studies have examined the regular/irregular distinction in non-agglutinative Indo-European languages (primarily English) with relatively simple morphology. Additionally, the majority of research has focused on verbal rather than nominal inflectional morphology. The present study attempts to address these gaps by introducing both plural and past tense production tasks in Hungarian, an agglutinative non-Indo-European language with complex morphology. Here we report results on these tasks from healthy Hungarian native-speaking adults, in whom we examine regular and irregular nominal and verbal inflection in a within-subjects design. Regular and irregular nouns and verbs were stem on frequency, word length, and phonological structure, and both accuracy and response times were acquired. The results revealed that the regular/irregular contrast yields similar patterns in Hungarian, for both nominal and verbal inflection, as in previous studies of non-agglutinative Indo-European languages: the production of irregular inflected forms was both less accurate and slower than of regular forms, both for plural and past-tense inflection. The results replicate and extend previous findings to an agglutinative language with complex morphology. Together with previous studies, the evidence suggests that the regular/irregular distinction yields a basic behavioral pattern that holds across language families and linguistic typologies. Finally, the study sets the stage for further research examining the neurocognitive substrates of regular and irregular morphology in an agglutinative non-Indo-European language. 相似文献

Cytoskeletal motors include myosins, kinesins and dyneins. Myosins move along tracks of actin filaments, whereas kinesins and dyneins move along microtubules. Many of these motors are involved in trafficking cargo in cells. However, myosins are mostly monomeric, whereas kinesins are mostly dimeric, owing to the presence of a coiled coil. Some myosins (myosins 6, 7 and 10) contain an SAH (single α-helical) domain, which was originally thought to be a coiled coil. These myosins are now known to be monomers, not dimers. The differences between SAH domains and coiled coils are described and the potential roles of SAH domains in molecular motors are discussed. 相似文献

A mechanistic understanding of the relationship between the chemistry of drug Ag formation and immune function is lacking. Thus, mass spectrometric methods were employed to detect and fully characterize circulating Ags derived from piperacillin in patients undergoing therapy and the nature of the drug-derived epitopes on protein that can function as an Ag to stimulate T cells. Albumin modification with piperacillin in vitro resulted in the formation of two distinct haptens, one formed directly from piperacillin and a second in which the dioxopiperazine ring had undergone hydrolysis. Modification was time and concentration dependent, with selective modification of Lys(541) observed at low concentrations, whereas at higher concentrations, up to 13 out of 59 lysine residues were modified, four of which (Lys(190), Lys(195), Lys(432), and Lys(541)) were detected in patients' plasma. Piperacillin-specific T lymphocyte responses (proliferation, cytokines, and granzyme B release) were detected ex vivo with cells from hypersensitive patients, and analysis of incubation medium showed that modification of the same lysine residues in albumin occurred in situ. The antigenicity of piperacillin-modified albumin was confirmed by stimulation of T cells with characterized synthetic conjugates. Analysis of minimally modified T cell-stimulatory albumin conjugates revealed peptide sequences incorporating Lys(190), Lys(432), and Lys(541) as principal functional epitopes for T cells. This study has characterized the multiple haptenic structures on albumin in patients and showed that they constitute functional antigenic determinants for T cells. 相似文献

During development, skeletal muscle precursor cells fuse to form multi-nucleated myotubes. However, it is unclear how this fusion is regulated such that linear myotubes are produced. In a previous study, we found that linear arrays of myoblasts cultured on micropatterns of laminin fused to form linear myotubes of a constant diameter, independent of the width of the laminin track. This suggested that a mechanism exists to prevent myoblasts from fusing laterally [Exp. Cell Res. 230 (1997) 275]. In this study, we have investigated this further by culturing myoblasts on ultrafine grooved surfaces previously shown to align fibroblasts and epithelial cells. We found that all the individual myoblasts were highly aligned along the groove axis, and time-lapse recordings showed that motility was mostly restricted to a direction parallel to the grooves. In contrast to the previous study, however, there was a strong tendency for early differentiating cells to form aggregates either at an angle of approximately 45 degrees or perpendicular to the groove axis. Nevertheless, we rarely saw myotubes formed at those angles, supporting our earlier idea that the ability of cells to fuse laterally is prohibited. Our data strongly suggest that myoblasts are most likely to fuse in an end-to-end configuration, and it is this that enables them to form linear, rather than irregular myotubes. 相似文献

This paper presents the derivation and partial analysis of a general producer-consumer model. The model is stoichiometric in that it includes the growth constraints imposed by species-specific biomass carbon to nutrient ratios. The model unifies the approaches of other studies in recent years, and is calibrated from an extensive review of the algae-Daphnia literature. Numerical simulations and bifurcation analysis are used to examine the impact of energy enrichment under nutrient and stoichiometric constraints. Our results suggest that the variety of system responses previously cited for related models can be attributed to the size of the total system nutrient pool, which is here assumed fixed. New, more complicated bifurcation sequences, such as multiple homoclinic bifurcations, are demonstrated as well. The mechanistic basis of the model permits us to show the robustness of the system’s dynamics subject to alternate approaches to modeling producer and consumer biomass production. 相似文献
