Human facial diversity is substantial, complex, and largely scientifically unexplained. We used spatially dense quasi-landmarks to measure face shape in population samples with mixed West African and European ancestry from three locations (United States, Brazil, and Cape Verde). Using bootstrapped response-based imputation modeling (BRIM), we uncover the relationships between facial variation and the effects of sex, genomic ancestry, and a subset of craniofacial candidate genes. The facial effects of these variables are summarized as response-based imputed predictor (RIP) variables, which are validated using self-reported sex, genomic ancestry, and observer-based facial ratings (femininity and proportional ancestry) and judgments (sex and population group). By jointly modeling sex, genomic ancestry, and genotype, the independent effects of particular alleles on facial features can be uncovered. Results on a set of 20 genes showing significant effects on facial features provide support for this approach as a novel means to identify genes affecting normal-range facial features and for approximating the appearance of a face from genetic markers.  相似文献

The ecological impact of an invasive species can depend on the behavioural responses of native fauna to the invader. For example, the greatest risk posed by invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina Bufonidae) in tropical Australia is lethal poisoning of predators that attempt to eat a toad; and thus, a predator's response to a toad determines its vulnerability. We conducted standardized laboratory trials on recently captured (toad‐naïve) predatory snakes and lizards, in advance of the toad invasion front as it progressed through tropical Australia. Responses to a live edible‐sized toad differed strongly among squamate species. We recorded attacks (and hence, predator mortality) in scincid, agamid and varanid lizards, and in elapid, colubrid and pythonid snakes. Larger‐bodied predators were at greater risk, and some groups (elapid snakes and varanid lizards) were especially vulnerable. However, feeding responses differed among species within families and within genera. Some taxa (notably, many scincid and agamid lizards) do not attack toads; and many colubrid snakes either do not consume toads, or are physiologically resistant to the toad's toxins. Intraspecific variation in responses means that even in taxa that apparently are unaffected by toad invasion at the population level, some individual predators nonetheless may be fatally poisoned by invasive cane toads.  相似文献

It is posited that the initiating event of amphibian regeneration of a limb, is retrodifferentiation* of what are to become the developing cells of the blastema. These cells reiterate a larval or premetamorphic ontogenic repertoire, induced by elevated levels of prolactin with adequate innervation. Subsequent redifferentiation of the blastema cells occurs, controlled by thyroxine and innervation.This temporal displacement of cellular morphologic characters in regeneration should be looked upon as a function of the ability to reiterate larval characters and subsequently metamorphose. If correct, this would explain why amphibians which metamorphose only once, lose the ability to postmetamorphically regenerate. An exception to this,Xenopus laevis, an anuran which can epimorphically regenerate, to some extent, will be discussed.[/p]  相似文献

The design of conformationally restricted eight-membered ring diketones as transition state mimics of the mechanism of action of cyclotheonamides on serine proteases is described. Two target compounds are prepared from mutilin, derived from the natural product pleuromutilin. Compound 3 shows significant inhibition of plasmin and urokinase in enzyme rate assays, but an analogue 4 in which the amide moiety has been omitted does not. An X-ray crystal structure of the diketone 3 confirms the conformational predictions made by molecular modelling.  相似文献

In cross‐sectional geometric (CSG) studies, both the subperiosteal and endosteal contours are considered important factors in determining bone bending rigidity. Recently, regression equations predicting CSG properties from a section's external dimensions were developed in a world‐wide sample of human long bones. The results showed high correlations between some subperiosteally derived and actual CSG parameters. We present a theoretical model that further explores the influence of endosteal dimensions on CSG properties. We compare two hypothetical femoral midshaft samples with the same total subperiosteal area but with percentages of cortical bone at the opposite ends of published human variation for population sample means. Even in this relatively uncommon scenario, the difference between the samples in the resultant means for predicted femoral polar second moment of area (J) appears to be modest: power analysis indicates that a minimum sample size of 61 is needed to detect the difference 90% of the time via a t‐test. Moreover, endosteal area can be predicted—although with substantial error—from periosteal area. Despite this error, including this relationship in subperiosteally derived estimates of J produces sample mean estimates close to true mean values. Power analyses reveal that when similar samples are used to develop prediction equations, a minimum sample of hundreds or more may be needed to distinguish a predicted mean J from the true mean J. These results further justify the use of regression equations estimating J from periosteal contours when analyzing behaviorally induced changes in bone rigidity in ancient populations, when it is not possible to measure endosteal dimensions. However, in other situations involving comparisons of individual values, growth trends, and senescence, where relative cortical thickness may vary greatly, inclusion of endosteal dimensions is still important. Mental imagery has been associated with many cognitive functions, both high and low-level. Despite recent scientific advances, the contextual and environmental conditions that most affect the mechanisms of visual imagery remain unclear. It has been previously shown that the greater the level of background luminance the weaker the effect of imagery on subsequent perception. However, in these experiments it was unclear whether the luminance was affecting imagery generation or storage of a memory trace. Here, we report that background luminance can attenuate both mental imagery generation and imagery storage during an unrelated cognitive task. However, imagery generation was more sensitive to the degree of luminance. In addition, we show that these findings were not due to differential dark adaptation. These results suggest that afferent visual signals can interfere with both the formation and priming-memory effects associated with visual imagery. It follows that background luminance may be a valuable tool for investigating imagery and its role in various cognitive and sensory processes.  相似文献

Background  

The species is a fundamental unit of biological pattern and process, but its delimitation has proven a ready source of argument and disagreement. Here, we discuss four key steps that utilize statistical thresholds to describe the morphological variability within a sample and hence assess whether there is evidence for one or multiple species. Once the initial set of biologically relevant traits on comparable individuals has been identified, there is no need for the investigator to hypothesise how specimens might be divided among groups, nor the traits on which groups might be separated.  相似文献

This study was conducted to follow the chronology of pronuclear formation in bovine zygotes after in vitro insemination with a population of spermatozoa having abnormal morphology. Semen samples were obtained and cryopreserved from four Holstein bulls before and after a scrotal insulation period of 48 h (Day 0). A pre-insult (Day 5) and a Day 20 post-insult semen sample were evaluated for morphology and used for IVF after standard swim-up sperm separation protocols. Pronuclear formation was scored on subpopulations of presumptive zygotes after they were fixed and stained at 3-h time intervals from 6 to 18 h post in vitro insemination (hpi). Post-thaw morphological evaluation of semen samples revealed a decrease in the percentages of normal spermatozoa in the post-insult samples compared with the pre-insult samples for Bull I (74-22%) and Bull III (68-1%). The sperm penetration rate decreased (P<0.05) between the pre- and post-insult samples for Bulls I (90-76%) and III (92-70%), but was not different for Bulls II (92-90%) and IV (78-85%). The pronuclear formation rates for post-insult zygotes for Bulls II and IV had comparable increases in development over time, whereas there was no increase in the pronuclear development for the zygotes from the post-insult samples for Bulls I and III, and generally a condensed sperm head was observed in the oolemma. At 18 hpi the fertilization rate between the pre- and post-insult samples for Bulls I (51-4%), II (88-75%) and III (94-2%) decreased (P<0.01), but there was no change for Bull IV (66%). In conclusion, we inferred that the failure in normal pronuclear formation was associated with an absence of normal decondensation of the penetrating spermatozoon; this suggested that the effect of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa occurred prior to cleavage, thus limiting early development.  相似文献

A robust analysis of comparative genomic microarray data is critical for meaningful genomic comparison studies. In this paper, we compare our method (implemented in a new software tool, GENCOM, freely available at ) with three commonly used analysis methods: GACK (freely available at ), an empirical cut-off value of twofold difference between the fluorescence intensities after LOWESS normalization or after AVERAGE normalization in which the fluorescence intensity is divided by the average fluorescence intensity of the entire data set. Each method was tested using data sets from real experiments with prior knowledge of conserved and divergent genes. GENCOM and GACK were superior when a high proportion of genes were divergent. GENCOM was the most suitable method for the data set in which the relationship between the fluorescence intensities was not linear. GENCOM has proved robust in an analysis of all the data sets tested.  相似文献
