It is often claimed that conserving evolutionary history is more efficient than species‐based approaches for capturing the attributes of biodiversity that benefit people. This claim underpins academic analyses and recommendations about the distribution and prioritization of species and areas for conservation, but evolutionary history is rarely considered in practical conservation activities. One impediment to implementation is that arguments related to the human‐centric benefits of evolutionary history are often vague and the underlying mechanisms poorly explored. Herein we identify the arguments linking the prioritization of evolutionary history with benefits to people, and for each we explicate the purported mechanism, and evaluate its theoretical and empirical support. We find that, even after 25 years of academic research, the strength of evidence linking evolutionary history to human benefits is still fragile. Most – but not all – arguments rely on the assumption that evolutionary history is a useful surrogate for phenotypic diversity. This surrogacy relationship in turn underlies additional arguments, particularly that, by capturing more phenotypic diversity, evolutionary history will preserve greater ecosystem functioning, capture more of the natural variety that humans prefer, and allow the maintenance of future benefits to humans. A surrogate relationship between evolutionary history and phenotypic diversity appears reasonable given theoretical and empirical results, but the strength of this relationship varies greatly. To the extent that evolutionary history captures unmeasured phenotypic diversity, maximizing the representation of evolutionary history should capture variation in species characteristics that are otherwise unknown, supporting some of the existing arguments. However, there is great variation in the strength and availability of evidence for benefits associated with protecting phenotypic diversity. There are many studies finding positive biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships, but little work exists on the maintenance of future benefits or the degree to which humans prefer sets of species with high phenotypic diversity or evolutionary history. Although several arguments link the protection of evolutionary history directly with the reduction of extinction rates, and with the production of relatively greater future biodiversity via increased adaptation or diversification, there are few direct tests. Several of these putative benefits have mismatches between the relevant spatial scales for conservation actions and the spatial scales at which benefits to humans are realized. It will be important for future work to fill in some of these gaps through direct tests of the arguments we define here.  相似文献

Ventilation during ischemia attenuatesischemia-reperfusion lung injury, but the mechanism is unknown.Increasing tissue cyclic nucleotide levels has been shown to attenuatelung ischemia-reperfusion injury. We hypothesized thatventilation prevented increased pulmonary vascular permeability duringischemia by increasing lung cyclic nucleotide concentrations.To test this hypothesis, we measured vascular permeability and cGMP andcAMP concentrations in ischemic (75 min) sheep lungs that wereventilated (12 ml/kg tidal volume) or statically inflated with the samepositive end-expiratory pressure (5 Torr). The reflection coefficientfor albumin (alb) was 0.54 ± 0.07 and 0.74 ± 0.02 (SE) in nonventilated and ventilatedlungs, respectively (n = 5, P < 0.05). Filtration coefficientsand capillary blood gas tensions were not different. The effect ofventilation was not mediated by cyclic compression of alveolarcapillaries, because negative-pressure ventilation(n = 4) also was protective (alb = 0.78 ± 0.09). Thefinal cGMP concentration was less in nonventilated than in ventilatedlungs (0.02 ± 0.02 and 0.49 ± 0.18 nmol/g blood-free dry wt,respectively, n = 5, P < 0.05). cAMP concentrations werenot different between groups or over time. Sodium nitroprussideincreased cGMP (1.97 ± 0.35 nmol/g blood-free dry wt) andalb (0.81 ± 0.09) innonventilated lungs (n = 5, P < 0.05). Isoproterenol increasedcAMP in nonventilated lungs (n = 4, P < 0.05) but had no effect onalb. The nitric oxide synthaseinhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methylester had no effect on lung cGMP (n = 9) or alb(n = 16) in ventilated lungs but didincrease pulmonary vascular resistance threefold(P < 0.05) in perfused sheep lungs (n = 3). These results suggest thatventilation during ischemia prevented an increase in pulmonaryvascular protein permeability, possibly through maintenance of lungcGMP by a nitric oxide-independent mechanism.

Upregulation and activation of developmental axon guidance molecules, such as semaphorins and members of the Eph receptor tyrosine kinase family and their ligands, the ephrins, play a role in the inhibition of axonal regeneration following injury to the central nervous system. Previously we have demonstrated in a knockout model that axonal regeneration following spinal cord injury is promoted in the absence of the axon guidance protein EphA4. Antagonism of EphA4 was therefore proposed as a potential therapy to promote recovery from spinal cord injury. To further assess this potential, two soluble recombinant blockers of EphA4, unclustered ephrin-A5-Fc and EphA4-Fc, were examined for their ability to promote axonal regeneration and to improve functional outcome following spinal cord hemisection in wildtype mice. A 2-week administration of either of these blockers following spinal cord injury was sufficient to promote substantial axonal regeneration and functional recovery by 5 weeks following injury. Both inhibitors produced a moderate reduction in astrocytic gliosis, indicating that much of the effect of the blockers may be due to promotion of axon growth. These studies provide definitive evidence that soluble inhibitors of EphA4 function offer considerable therapeutic potential for the treatment of spinal cord injury and may have broader potential for the treatment of other central nervous system injuries.  相似文献

Cytogenetic analysis of an Idaho population of the checkerspot butterfly, Euphydryas colon, has revealed considerable inter- and intra-individual variation in chromosome number which turns out to be a classic case of B chromosome variation. The basic chromosome complement of the species is n (, )=31. The A chromosomes were aligned equatorially at mitotic metaphase and metaphase II, and axially at metaphase I, indicating a restriction of centric activity at the first meiotic division. No failure of pairing between homologous A chromosomes was observed and, although a marked asynchrony of chromatid separation was found to be characteristic of mitotic telophase and telophase II, the frequency of macrospermatid formation was low. The B chromosomes were at least partly heterochromatic but exhibited some variation in both pycnosity and size. Mitotically stable B-containing individuals showed a preponderance of unpaired Bs at first metaphase and these divided at either first or second anaphase. The presence of Bs was associated with a heightened production of abnormal spermatids particularly in individuals with high numbers of B chromosomes. Among the 25 individuals sampled, 21 carried from 1–6 B chromosomes, and of these 14 were mitotically stable. In all 7 unstable individuals the mean number of B chromosomes per cell exceeded the modal number. Assuming that the modal number represents the zygotic number, these results suggest that a mechanism to boost the number of B chromosomes exists in males of E. colon.  相似文献
