In this study, hard shell of apricot stones was selected from agricultural solid wastes to prepare effective and low cost adsorbent for the gold separation from gold-plating wastewater. Different adsorption parameters like adsorbent dose, particle size of activated carbon, pH and agitation speed of mixing on the gold adsorption were studied. The results showed that under the optimum operating conditions, more than 98% of gold was adsorbed onto activated carbon after only 3 h. The equilibrium adsorption data were well described by the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. Isotherms have been used to obtain thermodynamic parameters. Gold desorption studies were performed with aqueous solution mixture of sodium hydroxide and organic solvents at ambient temperatures. Quantitative recovery of gold ions is possible by this method. As hard shell of apricot stones is a discarded as waste from agricultural and food industries, the prepared activated carbon is expected to be an economical product for gold ion recovery from wastewater.  相似文献

Background aimsCell therapy is considered a promising option for treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). The purpose of this study is to use combined therapy of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and BMSC-derived gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic inhibitory neurotransmitter cells (BDGCs) for the contusion model of SCI in rats.MethodsBDGCs were prepared from BMSCs by pre-inducing them with β-mercaptoethanol followed by retinoic acid and then inducing them by creatine. They were immunostained with BMSC, proneuronal, neural and GABA markers. The BDGCs were intraspinally transplanted into the contused rats, whereas the BMSCs were delivered intravenously. The animals were sacrificed after 12 weeks.ResultsThe Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan test showed improvement in the animals with the combined therapy compared with the untreated animals, the animals treated with GABAergic cells only and the animals that received BMSCs. The immunohistochemistry analysis of the tissue sections prepared from the animals receiving the combined therapy showed that the transplanted cells were engrafted and integrated into the injured spinal cord; in addition, a significant reduction was seen in the cavitation.ConclusionsThe study shows that the combination of GABAergic cells with BMSCs can improve SCI.  相似文献

While the cell imposes multiple barriers to virus entry, enveloped viruses are remarkably still able to gain entry to their cellular hosts by hitchhiking and remodeling the endomembrane system to traffic within, and eventually escape from, endosomal organelles for their genome release. Elucidating viral entry mechanisms and their interaction with the host trafficking network is necessary for antiviral therapy. Here, we focus on the use of host autophagy molecular factors during the entry of prototypic negative-stranded RNA viruses, and highlight recent progress in our understanding of the role of one such factor, UVRAG, in both viral and cellular endocytic membrane trafficking and fusion events.  相似文献

Rhamnolipids (RLs) produced by the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa are considered as potential candidates for the next generation of surfactants. Large-scale production of RLs depends on progress in strain engineering, medium design, operating strategies, and purification procedures. In this work, the rhlAB genes extracted from a mono_RLs_producing strain of P. aeruginosa (ATCC 9027) were introduced to an appropriate safety host Pseudomonas putida KT2440. The capability of the recombinant strain was evaluated in various media. As a prerequisite for optimal medium design, a set of 32 experiments was performed in two steps for screening a number of macro-nutritional compounds. In the experiments, a two-level fractional factorial design resolution IV was followed by a two-level full factorial one. By means of this approach, it was observed that glycerol, yeast extract, and peptone have significant positive influence on recombinant RLs production while the yeast extract/peptone two-factor and glycerol/yeast extract/peptone three-factor interactions have considerable negative effects. A wide range of variation from 0 to 570 mg/l was obtained for RLs production during the screening experiments indicating the importance of medium optimization. The results point out the opportunity for possible higher yields of RLs through further screening, mixture/combined mixture designs, and high-cell-density cultivations.  相似文献

2-Butanol and its chemical precursor butanone (methyl ethyl ketone – MEK) are chemicals with potential uses as biofuels and biocommodity chemicals. In order to produce 2-butanol, we have demonstrated the utility of using a TEV-protease based expression system to achieve equimolar expression of the individual subunits of the two protein complexes involved in the B12-dependent dehydratase step (from the pdu-operon of Lactobacillus reuterii), which catalyze the conversion of meso-2,3-butanediol to butanone. We have furthermore identified a NADH dependent secondary alcohol dehydrogenase (Sadh from Gordonia sp.) able to catalyze the subsequent conversion of butanone to 2-butanol. A final concentration of 4±0.2 mg/L 2-butanol and 2±0.1 mg/L of butanone was found. A key factor for the production of 2-butanol was the availability of NADH, which was achieved by growing cells lacking the GPD1 and GPD2 isogenes under anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

Background

Childhood tuberculosis causes significant morbidity and mortality in Southeast Asia, yet little is known about the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of this disease in Viet Nam.

Objectives

To determine the demographics, clinical presentations, radiographic and microbiologic findings, treatment regimens, and outcomes of children admitted with tuberculosis (TB) to a national referral hospital in Viet Nam.

Methods

We conducted a retrospective case series study of children ≤ 15 years old with bacteriologically confirmed or clinically diagnosed TB admitted to a national referral hospital in Ha Noi, Viet Nam from January through December 2007.

Results

One hundred three children were identified: median age 5 years (IQR 2-10), 44% female, 99% Kinh ethnicity, 27% residing in Ha Noi, 88% with BCG vaccination, 27% with known TB contact, and 38% malnourished. Intrathoracic TB was present in 62%, extrathoracic in 52%, both intra and extrathoracic in 19%, and undetermined site in 5%. The most common extrathoracic manifestation was peripheral lymphadenitis, and children under 5 were more likely to have miliary TB or both intra and extrathoracic TB. Fever and failure to thrive were common presenting symptoms among all participants (65% and 56%, respectively), 66% of those with intrathoracic TB presented with cough, and 92% of those with TB meningitis presented with severe neurologic impairment. Acid-fast bacilli smears and mycobacterial cultures were positive in 18% and 21% of children tested, and histopathology was positive in 88% of those biopsied. There were no adverse drug reactions necessitating change in therapy, and no inpatient mortality.

Conclusions

Extrathoracic TB was common, treatment well tolerated and clinical outcomes excellent. Culture confirmation rates were low and emphasize the need for improved diagnostics.  相似文献

A multicompositional particulate Li[Ni0.9Co0.05Mn0.05]O2 cathode in which Li[Ni0.94Co0.038Mn0.022]O2 at the particle center is encapsulated by a 1.5 µm thick concentration gradient (CG) shell with the outermost surface composition Li[Ni0.841Co0.077Mn0.082]O2 is synthesized using a differential coprecipitation process. The microscale compositional partitioning at the particle level combined with the radial texturing of the refined primary particles in the CG shell layer protracts the detrimental H2 → H3 phase transition, causing sharp changes in the unit cell dimensions. This protraction, confirmed by in situ X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, allows effective dissipation of the internal strain generated upon the H2 → H3 phase transition, markedly improving cycling performance and thermochemical stability as compared to those of the conventional single‐composition Li[Ni0.9Co0.05Mn0.05]O2 cathodes. The compositionally partitioned cathode delivers a discharge capacity of 229 mAh g?1 and exhibits capacity retention of 88% after 1000 cycles in a pouch‐type full cell (compared to 68% for the conventional cathode). Thus, the proposed cathode material provides an opportunity for the rational design and development of a wide range of multifunctional cathodes, especially for Ni‐rich Li[NixCoyMn1‐x‐y]O2 cathodes, by compositionally partitioning the cathode particles and thus optimizing the microstructural response to the internal strain produced in the deeply charged state.  相似文献
