There are often lag phases in plant invasions, seemingly dormant periods between arrival in a new range and rapid population growth. Lags impede prioritization of invasive-species control efforts: when eradication is most feasible, it is often unclear whether a species is benign or a potentially harmful “sleeper weed.” I used herbarium records to estimate lag phases for invasive or potentially invasive plant species in three regions of the upper Midwest. I tested whether factors related to species’ invasion epidemiology, traits, or the habitats they invade were correlated with lag lengths. From an initial pool of 151 species, there were sufficient records to test for lags in 76 for northern Wisconsin, 90 for southern Wisconsin, and 91 for the southern Lake Michigan region. Lags were identified in 77% (197) of these 257 datasets and ranged from 3–140 years with a mean of 47.3 ± 34.6 (SD). Lags differed by native range, introduction pathway, growth form and habit, dispersal mode, flowering phenology, pollination mode for a subset of species, and breadth, light availability, and water availability of invaded habitats. However, estimated lags were highly variable and tested factors did not have strong explanatory power. Exotic species comprised an increasing proportion of total herbarium records. Of the species with known introduction pathways, 85% were intentionally introduced, mainly as ornamentals. The long durations, high variability, and low predictability of lags, along with human culpability for an increasingly non-native flora, support a cautious approach to species introductions. 相似文献

Invasive green crab populations initially established in Canada within the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick in the 1950s and were present in all five Atlantic provinces by 2007. Genetic evidence suggests that the Atlantic Canadian populations originated from two separate introductions with differences in time of establishment among regions and possible population-level behavioural differences. In this study, we examine intraspecific foraging behaviour among crabs from different populations, and interspecific foraging behaviour between genetically similar crabs and juvenile lobsters. Both sets of foraging experiments involved competition for a limited food source over a 1-h period. In intraspecific match-ups, recent invaders from Newfoundland (NL) were significantly superior foragers than long-established invaders from Nova Scotia (NS) and New Brunswick (NB) populations; however, we found no differences between NL and Prince Edward Island (PE) invaders. Crabs from PE were better competitors than those from NS and NB, but these differences were not significant. Interspecific competition experiments indicated that the feeding behaviour of recent invaders (NL) and genetically similar, but long-established invaders (NS), differed in the presence of juvenile lobsters. Our study documents striking behavioural differences among populations of green crab from a small geographic region, which may reflect a combination of both genetic differences and time since establishment. In most transmissible spongiform encephalopathies prions accumulate in the lymphoreticular system (LRS) long before they are detectable in the central nervous system. While a considerable body of evidence showed that B lymphocytes and follicular dendritic cells play a major role in prion colonization of lymphoid organs, the contribution of various other cell types, including antigen-presenting cells, to the accumulation and the spread of prions in the LRS are not well understood. A comprehensive study to compare prion titers of candidate cell types has not been performed to date, mainly due to limitations in the scope of animal bioassays where prohibitively large numbers of mice would be required to obtain sufficiently accurate data. By taking advantage of quantitative in vitro prion determination and magnetic-activated cell sorting, we studied the kinetics of prion accumulation in various splenic cell types at early stages of prion infection. Robust estimates for infectious titers were obtained by statistical modelling using a generalized linear model. Whilst prions were detectable in B and T lymphocytes and in antigen-presenting cells like dendritic cells and macrophages, highest infectious titers were determined in two cell types that have previously not been associated with prion pathogenesis, plasmacytoid dendritic (pDC) and natural killer (NK) cells. At 30 days after infection, NK cells were more than twice, and pDCs about seven-fold, as infectious as lymphocytes respectively. This result was unexpected since, in accordance to previous reports prion protein, an obligate requirement for prion replication, was undetectable in pDCs. This underscores the importance of prion sequestration and dissemination by antigen-presenting cells which are among the first cells of the immune system to encounter pathogens. We furthermore report the first evidence for a release of prions from lymphocytes and DCs of scrapie-infected mice ex vivo, a process that is associated with a release of exosome-like membrane vesicles. 相似文献

Harvesting large carnivores is often a controversial issue and thus requires a higher precision than other types of recreational harvest. Despite this, management programmes are often initiated based on very limited knowledge about the state of the population and the composition and magnitude of the harvest. Here we analyse patterns of lynx harvest in Norway based on harvest data from 1994 to 2009. We found clear signs of sex-biased harvest rates, with males generally being more at risk. Further, harvest mortality rates increased with age among males but not among females. In general, the degree of quota filling was high, but there was a tendency for decreasing quota filling with increasing quotas. A population reconstruction of the Norwegian lynx population (1994–2004) based on a modified cohort analysis closely tracked the development in the official monitoring data, suggesting that the managers have access to relatively good information about the development of the population, at least at a larger spatial scale. Despite this, the population trajectory showed large temporal variation, and time lags in the management’s decision-making process are a likely cause of the observed patterns in the Norwegian lynx population. 相似文献

Institute for Hygiene and Technology of Food of Animal Origin were analysed by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), and by high performance
liquid chromatography (HPLC) for control. Detection limits were at 50 pg/ml (EIA) and 50–70 pg/ml (HPLC), recoveries were
80–120% (EIA) and 30–60% (LC). OTA was detected in 98% (EIA, 368 ± 217 pg/ml) and 93% (HPLC, 271 ± 170 pg/ml) of samples (maximum
1,290 pg/ml). Using published conversion factors for serum/intake estimates (1.34 or 1.97), the mean daily OTA intake of these
36 persons was 493–725 pg/kg bw. Long-term individual mean OTA levels of nine persons ranged from 162 ± 80 pg/ml to 549 ± 172 pg/ml.
Our data were compared with published OTA serum levels (1985–2008) for apparently healthy persons from a total of 30 countries.
On a worldwide basis, the mean of means for OTA in human serum was estimated to be 700 pg/ml, corresponding to a mean daily
OTA intake of 940–1380 pg/kg bw. This level, which was relatively stable over the last decades, is well below published tolerable

The goal of the present investigation was to study the effect of pH on growth and biochemical responses of Dunaliella bardawil and Chlorella ellipsoidea when exposed to different pH values. The two tested microalgae could grow in a wide range of pH (4–9 for D. bardawil and 4–10 for C. ellipsoidea). The dry weight gain and the biochemical components of D. bardawil were greatly enhanced at pH 7.5. In contrast, dry weight and carbohydrate content of C. ellipsoidea attained their maximum values at the alkaline pH. On the other hand, the protein content of C. ellipsoidea recorded its highest value at pH 4, while the pigment content of the same alga was highest at pH 4, 6, and 7.5 and decreased
at alkaline pH. Both pH 6 and pH 9 stimulated the accumulation of β-carotene, vitamin E and vitamin C in D. bardawil, with the highest values of the three compounds recorded at pH 9. In the case of C. ellipsoidea, β-carotene content increased at pH 6 and pH 10 as compared with the control, but the amount of β-carotene was much higher
at pH 6 than at pH 10. Vitamin E content was higher in C. ellipsoidea cells at pH 10 than at pH 6. Both pH 6 and pH 10 caused a significant decline in vitamin C content of C. ellipsoidea. 相似文献

Iodine deficiency is a factor that may compromise child development, but is not the only one. Other health determinants, some of them outside the healthcare system, are able to influence development. Fighting iodine deficiency may be a pragmatic and useful strategy if it is found to be not maleficent, beneficial to health, and cost-effective, and does not make us lose the notion that child development goes beyond psychomotor or cognitive performance.
