Increased resource availability and feedbacks with soil biota have both been invoked as potential mechanisms of plant invasion. Nitrogen (N) deposition can enhance invasion in some ecosystems, and this could be the result of increased soil N availability as well as shifts in soil biota. In a two-phase, full-factorial greenhouse experiment, we tested effects of N availability and N-impacted soil communities on growth responses of three Mediterranean plant species invasive in California: Bromus diandrus, Centaurea melitensis, and Hirschfeldia incana. In the first phase, plants were grown individually in pots and inoculated with sterile soil, soil from control field plots or soil from high N addition plots, and with or without supplemental N. In the second phase, we grew the same species in soils conditioned in the first phase. We hypothesized growth responses would differ across species due to species-specific relationships with soil biota, but overall increased N availability and N-impacted soil communities would enhance plant growth. In the first phase, Centaurea had the greatest growth response when inoculated with N-impacted soil, while Bromus and Hirschfeldia performed best in low N soil communities. However, in phase two all species exhibited positive growth responses in N-impacted soil communities under high N availability. While species may differ in responses to soil biota and N, growth responses to soils conditioned by conspecifics appear to be most positive in all species under high N availability and/or in soil communities previously impacted by simulated N deposition. Our results suggest N deposition could facilitate invasion due to direct impacts of soil N enrichment on plant growth, as well as through feedbacks with the soil microbial community. 相似文献

Juvenile calf oocytes represent an untapped source of germ plasm for reproduction. Reports on the developmental competence of calf oocytes have been controversial. In this research, oocytes were recovered after gonadotropin stimulation from Holstein calves (N = 10) at 2-3 mo of age (2-mo cycle) and again at 4-5 mo of age (4-mo cycle). The in vitro developmental competence was measured, and prestimulation follicle numbers (for 2-mo cycle) and poststimulation follicle numbers (both cycles) were obtained. The number of antral follicles doubled after stimulation (23.4 +/- 6.1 vs. 55.1 +/- 16.1) for the 2-mo cycle and for the 4-mo cycle (47.4 +/- 12.4). The number of follicles observed prior to stimulation in the 2-mo cycle was found to be highly correlated with the poststimulation oocyte recovery for both collection cycles (r = 0.95, 2-mo cycle; r = 0.81, 4-mo cycle). The majority (90-96%) of recovered oocytes were found to be usable for in vitro maturation and fertilization; of these, 41-42% cleaved and 10-11% developed to morulae or blastocysts. Eighty-four in vitro-produced embryos were transferred to synchronized recipients and resulted in 11 pregnancies, leading to 7 live (4 males, 3 females) and 2 dead (one male, one female) calves at full term. No significant differences were observed between the 2-mo and 4-mo collection cycles; however, 73% of the total pregnancies resulted from the 2-mo cycle. All pregnancies resulted from embryos of high-responding donors. The high correlation between the number of follicles prior to stimulation and the poststimulation response suggests the possibility of screening calves prior to stimulation for routine embryo production. 相似文献

Micronutrient deficiencies affect approximately 3 billion people worldwide. Malnutrition hinders the development of human potential and social and economic development in developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) have made fighting micronutrient deficiencies, known as hidden hunger, a high priority. Deficiencies of the micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, and vitamin A, are the most devastating among the world’s poor. WHO emphasizes nutrient supplementation and food fortification to address the malnutrition. CGIAR has placed a greater emphasis on biofortification through the HarvestPlus challenge program, and improved micronutrient content of the staple crops (rice, wheat, maize, beans, cassava, pearl millet, and sweet potato) through breeding and biotechnological approaches. An excellent example of biotechnology application is the development of ‘golden rice’ with adequate levels of a provitamin A, β-carotene. The Africa Harvest and the BioCassava Plus programs, respectively, are developing sorghum and cassava with improved nutritional quality. Brain fingerprinting (BF) detects concealed information stored in the brain by measuring brainwaves. A specific EEG event-related potential, a P300-MERMER, is elicited by stimuli that are significant in the present context. BF detects P300-MERMER responses to words/pictures relevant to a crime scene, terrorist training, bomb-making knowledge, etc. BF detects information by measuring cognitive information processing. BF does not detect lies, stress, or emotion. BF computes a determination of “information present” or “information absent” and a statistical confidence for each individual determination. Laboratory and field tests at the FBI, CIA, US Navy and elsewhere have resulted in 0% errors: no false positives and no false negatives. 100% of determinations made were correct. 3% of results have been “indeterminate.” BF has been applied in criminal cases and ruled admissible in court. Scientific standards for BF tests are discussed. Meeting the BF scientific standards is necessary for accuracy and validity. Alternative techniques that failed to meet the BF scientific standards produced low accuracy and susceptibility to countermeasures. BF is highly resistant to countermeasures. No one has beaten a BF test with countermeasures, despite a $100,000 reward for doing so. Principles of applying BF in the laboratory and the field are discussed. 相似文献
